I agree with everything you said. In addition to that, TOTK fails to make meaningful changes to the map (beyond a few). So for people who played BOTW searching every nook and cranny like before isn’t important, but instead it becomes a game of spot the difference. I liked the caves, but very little was done with them. The depths suck though. Beyond being the set piece for two dungeons, they have no real story relevance. They are never explained or acknowledged by the story. Same for the sky. It was interesting, but no one talks about how the islands came to be, they’re just there, not even Rauru knows why. For the map, they should have just sent link back in time with Zelda and they could have made some very cool and significant changes with that in mind. The main mechanic of ultrahand is cool and fun, but it feels mismatched with the story. It’s a zonai power, but no zonai ever talks about it, acknowledges it, or uses it, so it feels a bit weird. Additionally, the world wasn’t designed with it in mind, as it’s BOTW’s world. I never used any vehicles in the depths, and the sky’s only require the minimum engagement with Ultrahand to finish everything. The shrines make good use of it, but those are separate from the rest of the game. It’s a cool mechanic, but I think it would have been better suited for a Zelda side game, with that as the main focus. I haven’t even touched the story yet. The memories worked in botw, because you knew the whole story from the get-go: they found guardians and divine beasts, then ganon showed up took em over and killed everyone, so Zelda’s holding him at the castle. The memories served less as story conduit, and more as character moments. They filled out the fine details of the events but more importantly told us the emotions of the events. The memories give us as players and link a true motivation to want to stop ganon and save Zelda. TOTK doesn’t do that. There’s an order to the memories, but it’s not enforced, which can cause a disjointed story that spoils itself. Additionally since it has a story it’s trying to tell, it can’t focus on the character moments as well as BOTW could, making them feel a bit bland and flat. The sages are significantly less likable than the champions. And the story is so far in the past compared to link that it has no bearing on the present. In BOTW link lived through those events, but for TOTK it’s unrelated to him. I’m gonna end it here, because I’ve spent too much of my life complaining as is
@@BradsWorkbench you’re right, botw definitely made some major mistakes as well. While I enjoyed the divine beasts, they were a major departure from previous dungeons. Yeah, I think the vast majority of your video can be summed up in the following statement - Though open world Zelda has some great strengths, it also falls short in some ways from the traditional 3D Zelda. I, too, hope that they can manage to find a better way to work the story into the narrative and not let it be something that the character passively observes through memories of some kind.
Lot of people may disagree, but Twilight Princess is still one of the best Zelda games all these years later. It's a quite linear game for a Zelda game, but that's one of its strong points really. The story pacing is great, while not actually hand holding the player, something like what Skyward Sword did. Sure, the content towards the end feel rushed, but Wind Waker suffered the same exact issue. Nintendo hated the game, because it was made "just because everyone wanted a new OoT", but that's what makes it so great. It's basically OoT atmosphere, more fleshed out and unique aesthetic. Not to mention its blatant PJ Lord of the Rings inspiration, which as a huge LotR fan only makes it even more charming. This isn't even a "first Zelda game played" kind of bias. I grew up with NES, SNES, N64 Zeldas. TP was a game I played in my early adulthood, yet it still evokes that feeling of "ah yes, what a great game" feel. Where BotW (and ToTK) fall apart is that Nintendo thought they were being clever by making a sandbox game, in 2017, when sandbox genre had been already done hundreds of times, and Nintendo didn't even do a good job at making a sandbox. BotW world map is very empty, with the obviously mentioned landscape things to make the player head for *anywhere*, but for what gain? Single use weapons? Shrines? Yes okay, shrines, for making you more powerful, but why? For what story? The list goes on. ToTK is just the same thing, but they Ubisofted the game to death, just a metric crapton of stuff to collect, but nothing makes a difference in the game really, because again, WHERE'S THE STORY, WHY AM I DOING THIS? Both games just act like the whatever sloppy story they slapped as an afterthought on the game, should just be ignored entirely by the player. Funny enough, this is exact opposite of what Skyward Sword did, where they kept cramming the crappy story down the player's throat at every mandatory recycled revisit to old areas. Also, remember, Master, your wiimote batteries are nearly empty. Twilight Princess just had that perfect balance of storytelling and freedom. Story was used to lead the player to a new area, where the player was then allowed to freely explore, and a decent story also enhanced the feeling of player actions having an impact on the story. TP also has dungeons, big, long, fun dungeons. Zelda games need dungeons.
I really wanted to like Tears but it doesn't run well at all, and I'm usually fighting harder against the game's controls than any bossfight it has to offer. The canon in Tears is also really jank. Where are the towers and shrines? Why is the Shrine of Resurrection just *h o l e*? If you completed Champions' Ballad in BotW, the picture will be on the wall in Hateno when you visit the house in Tears. Clearly then, all those things definitely did happen. And yet it seems like Zelda threw out her magic time-stopping iPad, since you never hear anything about it ever again. Wait, how did they print that photo in the first place? The canon is tied up into a tired little spaghetti from which there is no escape and I am far too full to finish eating.
@@AyrisX86 Haha, exactly. I had a 10 minute max for this video, but I would have loved to dive deeper into the lore and continuity between the two games. Almost everything from BotW is gone! Where did it go? Who knows!! 😭💀

Good video, people have thrown fire at me whenever I say this, but tears was a rip-off to play. Putting many hours into breath of the wild then playing totk felt like a scam. Did barely anything in their 6 years of development and then charged $70 for it. They get a free pass though from everyone because it’s Zelda. Most are afraid to express their opinions about this game because a majority of sales went through iPad kids, so they’ll try to rip you apart. Time won’t be kind to this game. But regardless, keep the grind up!
I like how you bash both games. Generally people pick one over the other. Just to complement the video: I was playing God Of War 2018 and I felt like Kratos could've been any other random character in the universe and people wouldn't notice. It feels like it started as some great game engine and ended up with the GOW IP. The same I feel a bit with BOTW and TOTK. At the beginning it probably could have been some random sandbox, minecraft like game. But it fit well with the Zelda IP and would probably sell a lot better with this in mind. It is not a game like Mario Odyssey where you can clearly see some Mario patterns across all levels.
Conflicting? No, I think you mean it was bad but you can't bring yourself to put that in the vid title. TotK was without a doubt the most disappointed I've ever been with a game purchase. It was the game that made me vow to never buy a game at full price on launch day again. Like, TotK is a glorified DLC or tech demo, not a sequel to the best Zelda of all time that took 6 years to make. It's like the team working on it forgot to do their assignment so they just cobbled together a few old projects and turned it in last minute. In a game ALL about exploration let's: not create a new overworld map at all, straight-up lie about there being a substantial sky map, and algorithmically generate a boring underworld map then deliberately make it as tedious as possible to explore. The main criticism of the first one was the lack of real dungeons? Not only will the main dungeons be far less interesting than BotW's dynamically moving dungeons, now 1 out of every 3 shrines won't even have any content inside them, just a couple of arrows in a box or something. Anyone who claims to like TotK is actually just trying to rationalize their $75 purchase. Nintendo sees us as suckers who will gobble up any slop they serve. Never again bros.
Lol that's how traditional Zelda fans felt when Breath of the Wild came out though. We had to wait years for that junk? At least TotK is the definitive version of it.
@neetpride5919 TotK had new quests, bosses, dungeons, shrines, story, caves, and ultra-hand. Besides the surface map and game engine, it's not really the same. I explore for the adventure not to see some different shaped rocks/environment (not that I'm against that, of course). Not defending them reusing the map, though, just saying that the waiting 6 years is a separate issue and that TotK itself is much more fun than BotW when you compare the two, imo. Unless you're one of those "BotW's lack of overworld content is what made it good" people.
I feel sad that people's love for this game seems to have waned over time. It's a beautiful experience and I feel like they're incredibly picky when it comes to BOTW comparisons.
Hey there NateBob! Great video! I personally love video essays, especially ones put together as well as yours! and not to mention on my favorite franchise nonetheless! I was hoping to get your attention so I can inquire about something one on one. Is there a preferred email or method of contact I could reach you at? I'd love to have a conversation! Anyways, i do hope your Thanksgiving was very giving and that the rest of your week is good :) Happy Holidays! Hope to hear from you! - Enciso
Real sorry 'bout that. How long does a video have to be to be considered a video essay? My script was 5 pages long. Sure, that's terribly lengthy, but it is an essay. This is a video adaptation of that essay. I made this video for a college class, which required it to be under 10 minutes. I would have liked to, and certainly could have made it much longer by talking more slowly and including larger gaps between each section, but could not. Regardless, thanks for your feedback. I hope you otherwise enjoyed the video. (If you actually watched it, of course.)

@@Salvitrio at laest BotW was a full game instead of a $75 DLC
It's a beautiful experience and I feel like they're incredibly picky when it comes to BOTW comparisons.
only 330 views is crazy

Nah, that's just my college dorm room

I hope you have a Wonderful Wednesday :)
Dislike, I'll watch the video later
booo the story was bomb in this game
This video can't be less than 10 minutes and be called a video essay 🙄🤦♀️
Real sorry 'bout that. How long does a video have to be to be considered a video essay?
My script was 5 pages long. Sure, that's terribly lengthy, but it is an essay. This is a video adaptation of that essay. I made this video for a college class, which required it to be under 10 minutes. I would have liked to, and certainly could have made it much longer by talking more slowly and including larger gaps between each section, but could not.
Regardless, thanks for your feedback. I hope you otherwise enjoyed the video. (If you actually watched it, of course.)
