    This practically saved my marriage . As foreigner living in Japan , I spent countless time arguing with my Japanese wife about the right way to sit at the dinner table when invited to her parent ‘s home, couldn’t sit cross legged for more than few minutes shifting my weight from one side to another through the whole time , definitely annoyed all of them hahahaha) I watched this vid practicing day after day and for the first time I was looking forward to sit at the dinner table with my family, what a great moment it has been thank you guys for uploading this vid god bless you both Arigato.

      random, but this is the exact same reason I searched for this - just moved to Japan and I got invited out to a very traditional Japanese restaurant and couldn't sit on the floor comfortably, so they had to get me the "old person's chair" lol. Never again, I told myself.

    A very big thank you for making this video. I am 62 and have never been able to sit cross legged even as a child each morning in school assembly I couldn't sit cross legged with the other kids. Your simple and practical instructions and demo are really easy to follow. It has taken me several months of daily practice, but I can now sit comfortably cross legged for hours! I'm visiting India next month and can join yoga/meditation classes that would have been impossible before. A very big thank you to both of you - I'm a very happy subscriber!

    I’m so grateful that a physical therapist even recognises that some of us simply have not been able to do this cross legged stuff…..and is helping us to do it! I’ve given up on Pilates and yoga because I’ve actually felt so inadequate! All due to ‘teachers’ who only want to work (it seems) with the fit, healthy (not forgetting young). xx

    Thank you for this video! I've been practicing yoga for many years and still struggle sitting cross-legged, it's a little frustrating. I've asked many yoga teachers: what should I do to improve this position, but I've never gotten such a clear and practical response as the one you give in this video. I will start practicing these suggestions and hopefully will see some results. It would be great if you could post a similar video to this but with suggestions for deep squatting. Tried one time to put the soles together, it almost made my legs pop out of my knees. Had to undergo lengthy operations to replace the legs into the hip sockets, and then a long period of rehab just for walking and sitting. Nowadays I can walk long distances fine (up to 8 miles daily) and somewhat sit properly, but my physical therapist told me that I should never, for the rest of my life, sit criss cross, otherwise the same thing that happened before would be irreversible.

    • @TomMorrison
      @TomMorrison  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      it's a tricky one because ideally you don't want to be afraid of any position that your body can do. There's ways you can do a very beginner version (such as sitting with your bum on a sofa and your feet on the floor to reduce hip fexion). But it's often best to follow the advice of people who have worked with you in person 💪🏻

    Hey, I'm really very impressed with your content as I'm constantly on the hunt for exercises I can do to help me keep limber and improve my standard of living, you have a new sub from me! 👍
    I got a very late diagnosis of anklylosing spondylitis at 40 years old, that was 5 years ago and because it was never taken seriously some of my vertebrae in my thoracic spine area have fused, that has given me a terrible posture and extreme flexibility issues in my lower back, hips and legs and as a result. It's really hard to find things I can do that don't hurt me in the process but I would rather try and fail than seaze up for good! Anyway, thanks again as some of the stuff I have learned on here has genuinely helped me feel better and that has given me a much brighter and far less gloomy outlook for the future! I look forward to more great content and a more flexible and less painful life as a result. 🙂👍

      Looks like multiple muscle groups get recruited by doing those, looking forward to giving them a go. I do have to be a tad careful with the rotation of my spine at times due to the solid fused lump and I also have a prolapsed disk in my lower back, caused by all the force being exerted there from the bend in my back but I don't think these will negatively affect that, in fact they could really help with mobility, hence your recommendation of course. 🙂

      Just depends what you are most likely to do really, I tend to lean on moving through ranges and not sitting still as it’s generally most comfortable for the normal person and they are more likely to do it more often, if you hate static held stretches then you’ll be less likely to ever do them, some people say 90 seconds, some say 30, I say hang out until you feel like you made a minor improvement then hit it again the next day and build it up that way

    • @TomMorrison

      Getting the heel sit will be the main thing here, also plenty of time with the split squats in SMM, we have a video if you struggle to sit on your heels too!

    No super surprised that I actually have decent hip mobility (less lower back though). However, sitting like this especially for long periods if time is painful on my knees and hips. Likely just a strength issue.

    I’m hoping to be able to dump my block for sitting - it always seemed to me that raising the hips by sitting on a block was masking rather than curing the issue. I run a lot every day- do you reckon this could explain the tightness?

    People who are used to Western toilet ( on commode) often find it difficult to sit down with crossed legs. In India, in many families even aged people sit on the floor easily and use Indian toilets without any difficulty and they don't complain about knee pain also.

      Yes some people a few weeks and others can take a few months, it’s worth putting the time in to though, it’s not just that position that is affected it means a lack of external rotation in your hips if you can’t do it
