Fashion's Intense Relationship With Music

  • On the heels of the Golden Globes and red-carpet fashion, we're talking about what makes music so powerful in fashion runway shows, and how musicians make the designer brands they wear more complex. On today's question video, we talk about the creation of a fashion wiki, why covering up-and-coming fashion brands is difficult, and how we create our coverage for Paris Fashion Week.

I am not joking when i say the soulja boy "haters get mad cuz i got me some bathin ape" line when i was in 6th grade was the singular thing which got me started on looking up fashion. It took many many many years to wind up in a bliss foster comments section but we're very unironically grateful to soulja boy for making us realize that "expressing yourself through clothes" was a concept that existed.

what you said about meanigful versus meaningless content, as a typical « adhd person », i think its interesting that your 20 or 30 or even 40 minutes long videos always gets me. I dont know if it’s your way of never talking about superficial details and always getting deep into subjects or simply the way you talk and behave that sticks with me but it works… you know these moments when you say OKAY STAY WITH ME THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MOMENT IN THIS VIDEO it resonates so much with me. i feel like your personality and the way you behave play a major role in keeping my attention for 20 minutes straight

Yes. I agree. Bliss has a fantastic presence through the camera. He has real talent for teaching. I watch his videos mainly for the content, but also as an inspiration in my job. I teach metrology (no, not weather, measuring), a quite dry and technical subject. I wish I someday could be as good as Bliss in keeping a very complex train of thoughts engaging and clear.

in the gothic lolita community, we have a pretty complete wiki and it rocks. we focus on stock images, colorways, motifs, brands, and release years; because this stuff is not usually from runway shows, a lot of our stuff is sourced from magazines, and it takes a little digging. the designer fashion community can definitely get it together if people are passionate enough!

Theory: all clothing is cosplay. Everyone is dressing in such a way that says something that they want to say about themselves. Even if you are saying “don’t look at me, I’m just a regular person trying to get through the day” - that’s still a statement that you have to carefully pick out your outfit to make that statement. All of fashion is an aesthetic that we want to play in: historical renaissance or historical Anne of Green Gables or Rock star of the ‘80’s, adventurer, military etc. Music is a huge part of creating that aesthetic, music and the perfect bag

I really appreciate your perspective on fashion as well as your taste and extensive research undertaken. It is not lost on us watching... In the 90's as a kid I was obsessed with watching 'fashion t.v.' and on that channel was a segment hosted by Elsa Klench- Looking back it's corny but it was a wealth of insight into fashion, designers and culture. I feel you have filled that void in fashion journalism for me. Daniella is right in saying everyone is doing the same thing but you folks aren't and I am so here for this.

In my opinion, without the George Micheal song Freedom! ‘90 released in 1990. The concept of the supermodel, the women themselves (Linda, Christy etc.) , and the 90s obsession with fashion would never have happened. The Versace Fall 1991 was the perfect blend of both music and fashion to create an unforgettable moment in time. ❤

It is absolutely an unfortunate reality that the internet has become a place to turn your brain off rather than a place to soak up as much free knowledge or how Virgil would say “free game” as possible. You articulated it very well & despite the challenges I agree, the first step is being more intentional with what we click on & what we give our energy to. We came to places like TH-cam & even twitter to get an alternative view on the more niche things we love. Not to watch the same mindless garbage that’s available on the legacy media!
& with a more aggressive & less considerate tone, stop being zombies & be present in what you watch. This is as much your diet as the food you eat & the same ones who complain about the overbearing amount of demna convos when we need more Kiko convos are often the same ones on their 8th rerun watch of “The Office” lmao.
Y’all have an incredible balance of everything & I appreciate your work dearly 💙

re trying to get fashion considered more seriously: I havent been following y'all for long, but that's ABSOLUTELY something I've appreciated about the work on this channel. I spent most of my life not really taking fashion seriously as an art, and I've been trying to do a better job at that lately if only because I feel like my concept of art DEMANDS that I do, and the unashamedly analytical-and-unpretentious approach y'all take on this channel is not only helpful in explaining the history, work, and intent behind what you cover, but also inspiring re: how to think about fashion-as-art.

    "These New Designers Suck."
    "Braindead Futurism"
    "So Fashion is pretty Screwed"
When Promoting new stuff an interesting theory is to say undeservingly negative things for amazing pieces that may be misunderstood. The same reason names like Playboi Cart and Lil Uzi were able to get big (tons more, much more valid names I could have used) was cuz they made something new and older listeners undeservingly hated on it cuz it was "mumble rap" and didn't conform to the same reasons rap music had previously been made for. This turns heads and makes people question exactly why it's so bad. Wanna talk about people who scroll on their phone to zone out a lot of people on that timing pander to negativity and whilst obviously you'll be hyping them up, I think these double edged concepts would prolly be the best way to try that out. Essentially if a phone is an escape, they want the their life to not seem so bad, so if they see disappointment they feel a bit better about their own life.

A celebrity stylist, a designer and a musician walk in to a bar and stare up at the Grammys on TV. The stylist says "ugh, a meat dress, I'd have put her in some up and coming new street wear" The designer takes a long drag from their cigarette and quips "I'd have made the most beautiful corduroy, vinyl and tulle romper". The musician passes out in their vodka, pees themselves and the other two gasp. I don't remember how the rest of the story goes but it was on the cover of Vogue is the punchline of this joke I am making up right now sitting next to a statue of Lemmy from Motorhead while going over the LAFW stuff I can't bare to look at 3 months later.

Open sourced wikipedia esc but make it fashion would be an amazing website. MDLA, a tech company in NYC, attempted this but still hasn't finished. I spoke with a representative last year and they seemed very enthusiastic about the future and open to suggestions-but I've yet to see any major improvements (hopefully soon!). I wonder if an LLM could be trained to find the information needed and populate it into respective categories on the website? There are so many ways this could be done but it's definitely a creatively intensive and objectively difficult void to fill!

I would be likely to engage in that content if it was directly labeled as for example, “up & coming designers to watch:designer name.” I think what I’m trying to say is that if forest (video topic in the title) is clearly stated and then I would have more “buy-in” to click on the video.

It’s okay to say “you guys”, saying what “you people” just doesn’t roll off the tongue 😛. Also it would be great if designers were better at housing and making their own archive a priority. Trying to go back and get this information especially prior to the digital age is a rough go.

Ive always had a streamlined taste in music but the music that BFRND creates makes me feel so immersed which, actually, proves your point. I listen to it outside the runway presentation. Everytime they come on i always feel like im there on the runway, that i am a representation of this immense world that is being created. But thats a part of the show, to immerse you in the world. Music allows us to feel a connection to the show, pieces and designer as it is non-visual. To be able to create a world from just music and allow the viewer, the model, the composer and anyone who is a part of it to immediately feel a part of the journey. BFRND makes me feel close to Balenciaga. It draws us closer and i love that.

18:12 I can’t speak for the rest of your viewership. But I absolutely would watch that Video. Maybe do a poll. I don’t know how much that will help. However given that no one has really done it or is going too. The video could really blow. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Especially with a little TikTok build up/roll out behind it

I’ve been thinking about archive accounts and their importance in the industry. You talked quite a bit archives and what you would like in a fashion archive, but could you touch on why they are important and the impact they can have?
Thanks for all you do! Love your videos!

At 4:29, I can't get over that Balenciaga runway scene where the model has such large shoes. The scale on that. They're like 2x or 3x larger the size of the model's head.

i was talking you up to @FashionRoadman the other day, about your slyness - so i loved that you mentioned it: most people don't want to see criticism or new brands.

      here's what i said, and i quote ;-)
"i like what @BlissFoster does. (did i tag him? can you tag him? i have the impression that i'm not able to tag people here and i don't know why). he goes to paris and sees ALL the shows he can. he is even brave enough to go to chiuri's dior - a trooper. and then he spends most of the time talking about designers no-one knows and even talking to them. and so he can have the bait, "know everything that happened in paris" but still just show us the weird stuff he likes."

Have you guys thought about creating products as a way of support? I know a lot of people would enjoy whether it's a mug or a shirt of some sorts with fashion history or just your personal sayings that we've come to love while watching your videos.

It's an interesting topic. It seems to me there may be multiple reasons. I wonder if it's slightly to give the models' walks a quality of dance, or at least slightly make peeps think about how the clothes move, since many seem to find that interesting.

Anonymous Ism 💫💫 they’re really expensive if you buy a bunch of them at retail all at once, but it’s all that I’ve asked my family for for Christmas for the last seven years. By getting six or seven pairs each year, I’ve built up a really sturdy collection 💫💫

I really enjoy your points of view and interpretations about the art of fashion, been enjoying the long videos thus they are very informative and well made, honestly changed my world. just wanted to say that but also state that I actually find this short videos rlly pleasant as well because we can see more about your essence. loved the video from minute 15:00, the "not rant" about being purposeful with time, it's just so true, thank you :) will definitely join the patreon when im back on track with work, keep it up guys
