      I bought that product called "The Planket" from Home Depot that was supposed to protect against frost. Ever plan I used that on died. I had a small plastic covered greenhouse the wind apparently tore a whole in that was enough to effect the warming up that occurred with last frost. I will replant. Just sad right now. Hi Laura! Had a question on up-potting your seedlings. Can you start a seed in a pot that is already large enough to support its roots or do you have to start them in a small cell first? I wondered this when you moved your two cucumbers into a larger pot, could you have started them in the larger pots to begin with? Thank you so much and appreciate your guidance! It looks like the cucumber flowers were female and the little cucumbers were just the ovaries of the female flower. Those need to be hand pollinated while indoors, otherwise it's a waste of a female flower since there will be more male than female flowers. Hopefully you get some cucumbers in February if you pollinate them!! That would be amazing!

    For fungus gnats, I've had great luck combining mosquito bits into my potting soil which kills the gnat larvae and is safe for humans and pets. In combination with the sticky traps, you tackle both stages of their life cycle rather than just the adults.
    For seedlings, you can put mosquito bits into a watering can and make a "tea" to water your seedlings with.
    For severe infestations, watering a plant with 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 10 parts water will guaranteed take care of the problem.

      This works! I’ve been dealing with a fungus gnat infestation & finally feel like I’m gaining the upper hand. Also, I no longer top dress with moss because this always leads to fungus gnats for me because they love moist environments.

    • @choir90mom
      @choir90mom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mosquito bits are basically granular form BT, same as in the donut ones you use to kill mosquito larvae. I’ve found them at Home Depot or Tractor Supply, sold in jugs. They’re easier to use to treat a standing water puddle but using for fungus gnats is great…hadn’t heard of that. So far (knock on wood) I haven’t had a gnat issue but I’ll definitely keep this in mind.

      I love this - keep going. As for the germination, peppers need heat and to be warm (normally) to germinate, are they on a windowsill that gets cold at night? If you don't have a heat mat, or underfloor heating, put them somewhere a bit warmer at night and back on the windowsill in the day. Also, make sure they haven't rotted now they have been in the soil for a while, you might need to start with some new ones. Good luck.

      Like Gee suggest they might need to be warmer, I suggest putting them on top of the fridge they don’t need light to germinate so the warmth from the fridge will help. I would also check to see if they are viable some times the seeds themselves are not good. Good luck!!! It’s so great to see people your age interested in gardening. Keep up the good work.

      Most pumpkins really like to sprawl. You might be able to plant some in containers, but they will need ground around them to vine out. The vines have baby root systems on them, so they can’t grow on a balcony or cement patio, etc. They need dirt under their vines.

    I hope this doesn’t come off as rude, but it’s really encouraging to see that a skilled gardener like you doesn’t have some germinated seeds. I’m starting all my seeds in trays outdoors (I’m zone 12a so I don’t have frost) and I’ve been watching some of my tried and true not come up. I love how relatable you are and that you never hide what can be seen as failures. Us gardeners know it’s not a fail, but you never try to put on a picture perfect persona of yourself. It’s what we love about you 💛🍋

    I watch another gardener that suggest using boiling water to dampen your soil. This should kill any gnat eggs/larva in the potting soil. Let cool before using. Hope this is helpful.

    • @suzi_in_zone6B
      @suzi_in_zone6B 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends what you mean by “soil”. Boiling water is okay for soil-less seed starting and potting mixes. It’s not recommended for those using compost/soil-based mediums, as heat sterilization kills microorganisms not just fungus gnats. Temps above 140°F kill mycorrhiza, which a lot of mixes now contain, and temps above 190° causes soil to release ammonia in amounts that’s toxic to plants.

    Happy February back to you! I wanted to let you know that I found your channel at the most perfect time. We just bought our first house and I have dreamed of having a garden my entire life and now it’s real. Our yard needs so much TLC and before I found you and Aaron I was so nervous to tackle…now I am just excited to get going. We live in FL which is a zone 9a so not super relatable with plant growing and species, but your incredible knowledge, go get it attitude and positive vibe is so contagious I cannot stop watching. I have seed started for the FIRST time and with your help, every cell germinated and they are growing so wonderfully. I am at the point that I need to repot and move up in containers so I appreciate that you showed your process today. I will be a GA fan for life and thank you for not only your guidance, but explaining everything so thoroughly and teaching all of us so much. If I could hug you, I would. God bless you and your beautiful family. ♥️

    This sounds crazy, but when I had to separate multiple seedlings in the trays, I could not find my little trowel, so I took a cheap dessert fork and squished it flat in a vise. This works better than anything I have ever tried and is gentle on the plants. Happy planting!

    Hi Laura, loved this update. Fungus Gnats are a nightmare and I’ve had them come in new potting mix. After talking to nurseries about the issues, they explained that damp soil being bagged up by the soil companies are unknowingly bagging up the Gnat problem. I’m in Queensland Australia and they’ve been in a variety of different potting soil.

      I purchased some daffodils through a big box store. Unfortunately about half of one package were rotted. I found a few bulbs that were damp inside the package. Definitely a situation of them not being completely dry before packaging. I would imagine with a shortage of workers companies are not scrutinizing background skills of prospective employees quite as much. The gardening trade has exploded in the last couple of years so I'm sure it's been even more difficult for them.

First timer as a seed starter and I have only 6 of 36 delphinium sprouting and i started them January 11. I have too many to count of snapdragons (those tiny seeds were so difficult to put only a couple per cell!) and and around a 85% germination rate on my geraniums! Love when you do seedling updates as I am comparing mine to yours (mine on such a minimal scale).
