Why not "Ta shi wode tongxue"?

Thanks for your question! "Ta shi wode tongxue" is also correct. '的de' can be omitted if the following noun is a person.

​@@HualinMandarinI thought "de" may be omitted if the person after that is considered to be quite close to the person before "de".
Sort of:
Wo men de lao shi = Our teacher
Wo men lao shi = Our (beloved) teacher.
