I guess it doesn’t count because it was made by a few people who were passionate, but it should count under the criteria of “there was no scenario in which this would have succeeded.”
Sega's incompetence with the Sonic series circa 2006-07 is truly baffling. In the span of four months, they released: - A completely broken mess widely considered one of the worst games of its generation (Sonic '06) - A completely broken port widely considered one of the worst port jobs ever (Sonic Genesis on GBA) - A nearly unplayable mess widely considered to have some of the worst motion controls ever seen on the Wii (Secret Rings) Like, everyone always talks about how bad that era was for Sonic, but no one ever remembers that they released *three* absolute stinkers in almost as many months.
Surprised ET from 1982 wasn't on this. It was not only doomed to fail, it's considered responsible for nearly nuking from orbit the entire video game industry...
The saddest thing about Skull And Bones? Even with how it is, it's probably still fairly high in the ratings of Pirate games. Since that markets is still under saturated.
Be ready for Captain Blood to somehow beat it, a once canceled 2010 game doing better than a 2024 game. Also A like a dragon Pirate themed Spinoff next year, that actually have both ship combat and boarding.
8:10 There was more behind the scenes than just Yuji Naka leaving Sega. Nintendo announced the Wii and Sega was like, "I gotta get in there!" So they pulled a good chunk of the dev team from Sonic '06 to make Sonic and the Secret Rings. And it wouldn't be the last time that happened *Points to Lyric*
So glad I found out you were still making vids. TH-cam completely removed you from my feed I never tried to leave. Thank you for doing this for so long
From what I've heard about its development, it seems like their problem was too many cooks spoiling the broth. Leadership changes happened so often, and always brought a change in priorities with them. They kept scraping things and starting over, just for the next guy to show up and tell them to scrap everything again.
Suicide Squad Kill the Justice Game came out THIS YEAR?! I thought it'd been out for longer! There was another DC game that sank like a stone but I can't remember it's name...
What was even worse for Sonic ‘06 is that the dev team was split in half so that one team worked on the game while the other worked on Sonic and the Secret Rings because Sega knew a game for HD consoles like Sonic ‘06 couldn’t be ported to the Wii. Which made it lose more of the few resources than it already had.
Sonic X Shadow Generations was never in development hell and wasn't delayed, and we're being treated with some gorgeous art and animation so it will never be as bad as 06
@@Chaos-vm7cy The other problem is that Sonic Team was split in half to work on Sonic and the Secret Rings, with the other half working on 06. It's the definition of quantity over quality. This is why Dimps was hired to work on the Wii version of Unleashed and the 3ds version of Generations.
At the very least, Duke Nukem Forever did eventually have a DLC campaign that apparently brought in a number of things promised in trailers plus the villain from the first game. As for games that were doomed to fail, you really should have mentioned Aliens Colonial Marines. Seems like everyone forgot about it after Isolation came out and wowed the general public.
Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League had the most potential, honestly doing a superhero take a looter shooter ala Borderlands sounds like a great idea mixing over the top characters with unique traversal mechanics with over the top weaponry sounds like a blast that was unfortunately wasted by a number of things, I was hyped for it and decided to hold off on buying it, glad I did.
There's just not enough audience in the world to sustain all of them regardless of quality. If someone has spent years on one live service game, they're not going to suddenly jump on another one.

Surprising to not see Sony's 12-day wonder on the list, though. The Day Before is thoroughly baffling to me, how did people fall for the same song and dance that gor No Man's Sky in such heat a few years back...
The thing about the Steam returns, the only reason that the rest of The Day Before wasn't returned, is probably because the buyers didn't have the time to try it until roughly a month later, or tried to find something to like about the game and wound up going past the one hour mark. Steam's return policy is absolute crap, which is why I usual pirate the game first to 'demo' it, before I decide to hit ignore or buy it for myself in support of the developers for a good product. If steam had a more comfortable playtime gate before returns were denied, or demos weren't locked behind a timer on events like Steamfest, I'd be less inclined to do such practices.

Dark Souls 2. I could just say that following Dark Souls 1 is enough of a handicap. But there’s so much about its development struggles, that it’s a miracle a game that rivals the rest of the series in quality even exists. Just to point out a few problems, one is that the series’s creator was put on a separate project. Bloodborne and DS2 were made at the same time. Plus, the best talent went with Miyazaki. So DS2 got what’s been dubbed “The B-Team”. The kicker is that halfway through development, the Director got the boot, and new one installed, but their deadline stayed the same. So besides having to practically start from scratch, they had half the time. They used what they could, but weren’t happy about it. The topper is that the game is a love letter to Demon’s Souls and DS1, made by super fans, in homage to, but not copying Miyazaki. In having its own identity, it got trashed for not being Dark Souls 1.5. In the end, the game is the series Black Sheep. Innumerable videos trash it. New players to the series put out content like, “Playing the most hated souls game for the first time, to see if it deserves all the hate.” Honestly, it’s my favorite. I think it did the impossible. It stayed true to the vision, but needed to not copy it, and somehow created a game surpassing what the creator could do.
