  • In this video I makeover a Stag Minstrel dressing table, updating it's 80's style and giving it a modern day look. I will be cleaning, sanding and painting this piece, have a watch to see how it turns out!
Upcycling furniture has been a hobby of mine for a few years now, I am not a professional but I am keen to learn! Encouraging feedback is always welcome :)

Hi May as soon as I saw you using the sander I was thought to myself "Don't do it" as you found out it is so thin, I only use paint stripper on the tops of any mid century piece and hand sand only after that, I don't bother with painting the dovetails because after some use the paint will chip away, with the Rustoleum satin paint you don't need to use a wax as it's a primer paint and sealer all in one. The dresser looked great and those handles that complemented it too.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely try that next time with the paint stripper and hand sanding 👍

Good job im a painter with 38yrs exp & have done bits like this gold leaf etc, i normally hate these vids as you see some beautiful pieces painted & ruined as it can be a crime painting over beautiful wood, but like what i had it was mahogany that was badly scratched & would benefit from a revamp like here, my expert eye see you use your finger for stability doing those dovetails 👏 gives you more accuracy nice touch most wouldn't bother with painting in, you did that well & for once it looked better than before, well done 👏👏👏

Hi! Thanks for your comment and the compliments, much appreciated. I was happy with how the dovetails came out, especially for a first attempt, still some improvement to be made though and I'll be sure to continue to practice them when I get the chance. I agree, it can be a shame to paint over some pieces and I'm definitely after a project that I can restore rather than cover with paint! Thanks for watching 😃

Looks lovely. I’ve done exactly the same,I sanded the top and went too far…. Now decided to paint the whole piece instead.

Hi! Thank you for your kind comment. Yes it was a shame that it happened but its a lesson learned and it didn't turn out too badly in the end!

you just got a bit close to the edge with the sander, orbital sanders can be quite aggressive, for this reason i always hand sand the tops of anything stag or veneer to be honest, it can be so thin! you did a great job on it in the end. I've restyled a few stag pieces now and i cannot freehand paint the dovetails and keep them as neat as everyone else makes it look so well done to you, i have to tape them!!

Hi! Yes the sanders can be aggressive and I'll definitely be more careful next time with a piece like this. Thanks for watching and for your complimentary comment! 😃
