  • Gday, Stephen here I hope you enjoy this video!
    This lyrebird is just 1 of 10 lyrebirds heard singing during a late
    afternoon walk in the Dandenong Ranges National Park. I was able to
    film 3 birds from as close as 2 meters. My apologies to the video
    purists as it is not very steady. Unfortunately, I was not equipped for
    filming. I don't normally carry a tripod but prefer a Cullman 080
    Shoulder-Table-Pod used as a shoulder stock. This is great for getting
    grab shots and is much steadier than handheld. However, is not suited
    to filming. Combined with the weight of the 7D and zoom is a strain and
    the results are less than perfect. The conditions were also difficult.
    Cloudy and late in the day. High ISO also diminished the quality. None
    the less I was very pleased with what I managed to get. Filmed on a
    handheld Canon EOS 7D Lens EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM.

    Nice footage Stephen. I am now posting videos of the semi-tame lyrebirds of Dorrigo National Park under the heading Lyrebird Diaries. There are four of them who are approachable and I have copious video of them over 2 years. I am fascinated hearing lyrebirds from other areas as to how much their calls vary from place to place which seems to be due not only the birds in their environment but also local traditions as their own calls (at least 6 regular or common ones) also vary, identifiable as their common call but very variable. This is a very experienced bird which can overlap sounds and has a large repertoire, things which take years to develop., Love this fellow.

      Thanks, Stuart, I'm working my way through your videos. Nice job! This is very early in my video learning curve. This is shot with a 7D and now I also have a 7D Mark 2. I would have moved to an R 5 or 6 if not for having to succumb to the Adobe blackmail and update Lightroom and their pay forever terms. Some questions if you don't mind.
      What are you shooting with?
      Did you take a look at my Lyrebird-click video?
      Give me a call if you would like to chat Lyrebirds. See my web site for contact No.

      @@PowellStephen Hi Stephen. I was originally shooting with a Sony RX10 Mk iv single lens ultrazoom, but got frustrated by it's limitations. I needed a light camera and my DSLRs couldn't be held steady cause I had to shoot off the screen so I invested in a Canon Legria video camera. I can hold this to my eye or support it on a monopod. I got a Rode microphone to mount on it which really improved the sound though the built in mic is OK. I am working under rainforest canopy and the video camera is really good in a poor light which the Sony camera wasn't. Very tricky dodging round undergrowth, vines, lawyer vine and thorny vine but it is so rewarding to get good video of these amazing birds. Yeah, Adobe, like Microsoft made everything rental rather than buy outright which is all a real rip-off. I'll get in contact later when I find space. Cheers.

      Hi Stephen. I have also been posting on Instagram for some time under the handle @the _lyrebird_diaries. I actually have close to four hours of video, and though a lot of it is pretty average, it is all a record for the future. I edit it and post the best of it. I only recently thought of posting it here. Lots more to come.

    Many of the recordings on TH-cam are of Lyrebirds imitating electronic sounds and not the birdcalls that they do in a more natural environment. The sounds here are a wonderful array of birdcalls.
    Apart from those listed below, there is a peewit (pied mudlark) in there somewhere, and a little buzzing noise which is a Wagtail noise.
    Here are just some of the birds that this single bird imitates.
    Note: It returns to the calls of the currawong fairly frequently. The currawong is a highly accomplished singer, and so these calls are less able to be identified as of a single species than the calls of the kookaburra the whip bird and the cockatoos.
    1. 0:01 Kookaburra
    2. 0:03 Sulphur crested cockatoo
    3. 0:06 Wagtail
    4. 0:14 Something twittery
    5. 0:18 Currawong
    6. 0:19 Whip bird
    7. 0: 25 Currawong
    8 0:28 Wagtail
    9. 0: 30 Currawong
    10. 0: 32 Currawong

    • @PowellStephen
      @PowellStephen  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mandy,
      I Iove Currawong calls. We hear them often near our house. The soft and melodic sound is soothing. In amongst the other birds is the sound of a fleeing introduced blackbird 46 seconds in and repeated later. There is also Crimson rosellas & Grey Shrike-thrush. My favorite is the metallic rattle that it sings. It is not in this clip but it is included in many of the songs of lyrebirds in this part of the forest. I think this is pure lyrebird and is often sung whilst stomping both its feet whilst covered with its tail. See Lyrebird video by Stephen Powell Wildlife Artist 47 seconds in.

    • @MandyJMaddison
      @MandyJMaddison 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Stephen Powell. Could you possibly do a complete list?
      I enjoy this video much more than those which demonstrate a whole lot of mechanical noises.
      I lived for many years near Camperdown Cemetery in Netown Sydney, and was friendly with the currawong family who lived in the Moreton Bay Fig. I would sometimes observe a crow on its way over from the University. I would open my upper window, from which I could see the top of the tree and the top of the church spire. I would whistle "wit-to-wit wee-woo! And immediately a currawong would appear on guard on the top of the spire.
      So when the young ones were old enough, the parents treated me like Auntie, and if I was in the cemetery, they would bring the fledgelings to a low branch right over my head, and go off to forage.
      Anyway, the point of this story is that although those isolated birds made all the squawks and cries, and the alarm call, neither of them sang. It was quite sad to see these great birds sitting on the steeple on a windy day, without any rollicking singing.
      Eventually a pair of magpies came to share that 4 acres of greenspace, and were not only accepted by the currawongs, but taught them to sing. They did a sort of magpie song, and never learnt the "clanketty-clang" or "Wooooooo!" that are typical of Blue Mountains currawongs.

    • @PowellStephen
      @PowellStephen  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry but my bird song recognition is not up to the task. Your story of the currawongs is very interesting. So much of bird behaviour is learned. Bird apps often have regional sound variations.

    • @MandyJMaddison
      @MandyJMaddison 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Stephen Powell,
      The opposite story to the songless currawongs of Camperdown, was Pavarotti the Magpie of Wollongong.
      A family of maggies used to farage on my lawn. One of the fledgelings had a completely different preoccupation to the rest of his family. All he wanted to do was sing, and he had found his voice at a very young age, when his siblings were merely sqawking.
      By the time he was a year old, he was the most accomplished singer of any Magpie I have ever heard. He literally lived to sing. I became his enthusiastic audience.
      In the mornings he wouls accompany me along the street, from lamppost to lamppost, singing all the way, until he got to the house of a man who fed the birds every moring.
      After breakfast he would appear on the railings outside my studio window. I have no idea how he knew where I was located within the building, but he did.
      I recall one day that he was entertaining a young woman who was finishing an artwork on an outside landing. Finding an audience he was, really doing his stuff. When I walked out, he was obviously delighted to see me.
      He could immitate a number of different songbirds- crow was a snatch, currawong was easy, but for the grand finale he produced that incredible, high, staccato "Queen of the Night" passage from the Butcherbird song. Wow.
      He KNEW he had done something impressive, and strutted up and down the railing, preening himself.
      Well, with all these talents, he soon got a wife. But he was a bit too young for the responsibility of three babies. SHE wanted to teach them foraging. HE wanted to teach them singing.
      HE would line them up on the railings at the back of the pub, and try to teach them their "do re mis". She would call persitently from a nearby tree, to no avail. But they all survived.
      Eventually he was hit by a car and lost the use of one wing. He went to live at the TAFE where he could climb up a pigwire fence using his claws and beak, and was well fed by the students and site manager. He never stopped singing.
      My general observation is that individual creatures within any species have more or less talent than their peers- are more or less intelligent and also have more or less empathy.
      I can't help wondering whether this remarkable bird would have pased the self-recognition test, of which the only bird recorded to have passed was the European Magpie. This bird seemed to have a remarkable degree of self-awareness.

      Hi Sandy,
      I met a fellow wildlife artist at a meeting earlier this week. I offered to guide him to my favourite lyrebird site. We managed to see 10+ birds at one stage it was difficult to keep track of the numbers as there were 6 or more in one area. Caught a glimpse of a displaying male and the forest rang with the sounds of their calls. If you're ever in Victoria, Australia look me up. I don't need much of an excuse to visit these wonderful birds. Happy to share!

    No. It has a syrinx, which is a drumlike membrane at the bottom of the trachea just where the tube splits and leads into the bronchi in the lungs. The bird can change the tension of the syrinx as air passes over it and in that way make many different sounds.

    20 seconds in is a magpie .
    53 seconds is a red tail black cockatoo .
    1.10 is a kookaburra .
    1.34 a camera .
    1.54 a port lincoln ringneck , sounds like our WA 28's .
    3.50 another magpie .
    4.55 yellow wattlebird .
    There's probably about another dozen small songbirds sprinkled in
    but I'm from WA and struggling to name them .
    Also heard the roosting sounds of a flock of cockatoos (galahs?) nesting
    down for the night and the sounds of hungry chicks as well .

      Lyrebirds are already quite loud. Our local lyrebird expert says there is a valley in the ranges where I live where the lyrebirds added flute music to their song. Picked up from a local girl who was learning the flute!

    • @PowellStephen

      These are male birds. Their tails have two large coloured feathers and the filamented feathers in between. these are spread out like a fan. The female tail has plain brown feathers. The male sings and dances to attract females.

      These birds are very used to people. Every day joggers and walkers traverse the area. Some but not all are approachable. Whilst taking some of this video I had to back up as the 100-400 has a minimum focus distance of 1.5mt

    This is a nice bird to enjoy listening to when you go out to the wild, but as a guy that also enjoys my peace and quiet, I'm sure thankful this bird lives nowhere near me in any way possible.
    It would definitely drive me nuts.
    It looks like it never shuts up.

    • @PowellStephen
      @PowellStephen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They do spend a lot of their time quietly scratching in the search of food. They make a great contribution to fuel load reduction. Humans are noise makers I would swap bird songs for most human made sounds.
