My goal on the Iconic for the Green channel Overdrive was to match the Blue Channel 5150 III…but with a little more overall gain. And the Red channel is a little LESS gain without Burn than the III’s. So those two sounds overlap. Plus when you kick in the amp’s Boost footswitch pedal, it adds another 8dB in front in addition to what it adds with the knob after the preamp. So there’s a lot of flexibility using those switches and footswitch.
Nice to know sir! I think you did a killer job on the Iconic! Glad to see ya where I think ya belong sir! And that's designing killer 5150s! Hope you get a hand in the 5150IV!
Love my Iconic. Admittedly it's taken me a little fiddling to find the proper settings but I'll be damned if I didn't finally get there. My buddy was playing his Triple Rec with me last weekend and he told me the Iconic really matches up nicely with his beast. Damn fine work boss!
I play in a rock cover band. Everything from Joe Walsh to ZZ Top to AIC and in between. I use a 50-watt stealth through two 2x12s loaded with EVH greenbacks. I don’t even leave the blue channel. Simply phenomenal. I’m not saying it’s better than the others, but damn it is a great amp if you play live in front of people.
All great. Invective was my favourite. Regarding the Iconic. It’s of the same pedigree and one can’t go wrong with the tone. I just think a used 6505 or 6505+ are a better bang for the buck and reliable long term.
I love me some 5150 heads. All of them. Right now I own an Iconic combo and it's little freaking fireball. I don't see myself upgrading anytime soon except to get something like Stealth with a cab or a JP-2C or something, but even then I'm willing to take my time coz this amp just makes me so happy. I'm having a ton of fun with it.
The first time I heard and got to play through the 5150 3 Stealth I was floored by the blue channel with an OD808 in front of it. It was tighter than either my block letter or 5150 II. Yet at the same time it just had this chewy harmonic richness to it for big chords and open strings. For the record, I've been playing guitar long enough and hanging around guitarist forums like harmony central long enough to fucking hate using terms like "CHEWY" to describe tone... but alas, I really can't come up with another term to describe it and you can hear it here during this stream. The Iconic gets close, which it should since James designed it that way, but the stealth just has a little sprinkle of magic going on that I'm in love with. It was the first amp I played in years that made me want to buy another amp. I already had a 5150 block letter, 5150 II, so I didn't think I needed another 5150. The last amp I bought before that was a Splawn Nitro years ago but I ended up selling it to fund the stealth. Great amp. You don't hear a ton about Splawn unless you're on gear forums and such. I know you've demo'd it on the channel before too. Now I own all 3 5150s, pretty much my only tube amps at this point, that and my axefx 2 is all I'm working with these days.
Kyle, sorry if my tuner and relax comments were rude. I'm glad that you're not mad at me. Really enjoy these livestreams. Take care and sorry about the health of your dog.
I love these videos but i feel so many times you set the amps to sound the same. A suggestion would be to do same setting comparisons across all amps so we can really get a taste of the tonal differences. Example: EQ set at noon to compare Scooped setting comparisons Mid EQ bump comparisons. etc.
You worked your butt off to put this together. They all sound great, but the Iconic made me laugh every time considering it's price and the company it keeps. I wouldn't think twice about picking one up. I keep debating between the Iconic Combo and an MT15 for home recording.
Agreed. The discussion in the vids are more important to me than too much playing. I need to hear the playing, but the discussion is the bite for me. As far as tubes, to me it is the highs and lows between them. Not the so-called "tone" or "warmth".
They all sound brutally awesome. Great stream Kyle. And great playing. Got the stealth el34 and it’s fucking ace!! I really want an iconic or invective after this. Old school block letter is just a bucket list item. And yea do some Engls head to head and up against he 5150s. Cheers bro 😎
Kyle Bull, you are a good man for taking care of a senior dog. I KNOW it's hard. This dog has been your friend and loyal companion. It will be one of the hardest days of YOUR life. The price you'll pay for ALL the other amazing days. The pain WILL go away eventually. Bless you brother (p.s. I'm NOT religious)
Man, there is something about the original Peavey 5150, as soon as you turned it on the mids popped a bit more and it sounded mean. I almost sold my block letter years ago that I bought new when it was released and that would've been a mistake. That amp is a classic and sounds amazing.
Please do this with these amps and add the Peavey Ultra + orrr the 5150 1990's and the Iconic and Ultra Plus... I would literally pay to see that video lol. Either way, thanks duder!!!! I love your video's!
Kyle, if you don’t have one already - get literally the BEST tuner out there - the Peterson StroboCLIP HD - set it to one of the sweetened tunings and all the issue go away / it’s an insane difference vs. chromatic tuners, etc.. even has sweetened tunings for 7-strings, etc! The APP for iPhone is also very good but more finicky! Love the stream; thank you!! I used to ALWAYS say the OG 5150 was my favorite amp in the world but especially in this comparison (and even in my own room; I have one with the original tubes as well) it just sounds…. Dated! I know it records wonderfully but in this video I preferred the…. ICONIC! Wtf!! 😮😮😮😮😢😢😢 hahah cheers!
My Iconic arrives tomorrow. I have been stuck playing through a Randall RG1003H, which is a great amp, but not a tube amp by any means. I am so stocked! Also, I am 55 years old and can honestly say I am waiting patiently like a kid in a porn shop!!! Good day!
I realize this would be even more work than you are already doing but it may help to have a text at the bottom of the screen that identifies what head and pedal is in use. I'm pretty up to date on my gear knowledge but I'm squinting right now trying to identify one or two of those pedals on your board
I think the blue channel of the iconic is actually better then the stealth but I find all eveh amps scratchy when trying prolong palm mutes any tips on eqs to remedy this
Damn the stealth is sick ass hell man jeez wish i could snag one but iam holding out on the 5150 ii also i almost want your mesa triple rec man i been thinking hard on it lol omg iam confused man lol
Boomers are not 50 BTW. Most are in their 80's. I dont take things to heart. But that was a fucked up comment. I am 55 and was considering joining your discord. Not gonna happen at this moment. We do not ask for your respect. But many of us have fought for your freedom to say what you said. And at that, I have t consider wether or not I care to contribute to you further. Good day.
55? You old mummy, where did you fight, in the Third Punic War? What freedom, what are you talking about? Don't tell me you were one of invaders of Iraq under the false and malicious pretense of Iraqui having weapons of mass destruction, while in truth you were securing oil fields and killing unnarmed civilians. I like the OG the most.

When is the 5150 IV coming? Hopefully it have two notes type Tech with the ultimate 5150 high gain we love!

I think you would hear more differences in the CLEAN channels.

I don't care what anyone says...the Peavey 3120 topped every EVH amp that's been made so far.
