  • Why should you buy a motorbike? Your reasons to ride might be as philosophical as "freedom" or as practical as getting on the ferry first. I've heard worse. But it's hard to be gracious with 3 reasons that are fallacious.

I'm surprised about the saving money part - one of the first things I felt while riding compared to driving a car was less worry about paying for gas or insurance, I go places I would never go in the car because I'd weigh up the cost of a tank of fuel but my bike does 200 miles on $13 so the cost is pretty much removed from the equation when travelling for me. I have to learn how to properly maintain my bike so it doesn't decay too badly sure but that's also a plus - teaching me personal responsibility.

I got mine to save on gas and tolls, was about up to 400€ with a very diesel efficient car (BMW 116Ed). Even paying credit for the bike, I'd save about half a month or more. Then the pandemic started before I even had my license, lol, there goes the money saving.
But now my dad has my car (he lives in the UK, but pandemic made him stay here for a year now), so we are a one bike, one POS deadbeat car (2002 Peugeot with more broken stuff than I can count). My GF was already a bike rider before I even had a car license, so now we can divide the bike and the POS car, instead of having just one vehicle to get around with, plus making the POS car last longer by putting less kms in it. My bike being a NC700x with a 52L case, I can fit three full bags of groceries between the met-in and the case.

I actually think getting a motorcycle was one of the best financial decisions I ever made. At the time I only had a truck and a bicycle. The truck was annoying cause I could never find street parking, so I just kept it at home where the battery would repeatedly die on me cause I never drove it. Meanwhile I still had to pay something like $100/mo on insurance. The bike cost more like $30/mo to insure and it did end up lasting me nearly 10 years/(30k miles). It was really useful for the kinds of trips I just never could have made on a bike in a reasonable amount of time. The gas consumption was decent, though not as good as good as it should have been given how much smaller it was compared to a car (no wind tunnel tested body?). Maintenance was pretty cheap too. Unlike a car, there really wasn’t much on the motorcycle I couldn’t figure out how to fix myself.

It's a PRIVILEGE to be able to work on your engine, even being taught how to do so and being able to use cranes are a privilege. When I did my CBT training in the UK, the test centre had Honda CG125’s with 150,000 miles on the clock, driven by learner riders daily. It’s possible for them to last very long but I think careful consideration of the bike, ownership and maintenance from new is essential.

Having a bike to save money in university worked for me, partly. I had a car too, but would remove liability from it during riding season and the bike was half the price to insure. The CBR125 was great on gas in the city, but my Geo Metro actually beat it at highway fuel consumption (and was faster too - a rare thing to say about a Metro). Parking permits on campus were expensive and elusive for cars, but a motorcycle permit was cheap and let you park in more convenient lots (often a widened part of the sidewalk in front of your desired building). Being young and cheap, I skipped much of the riding gear that I now cringe to ride without.

Yeah this pillock clearly doesn't know what he's on about. No one wants to ride a push bike 40 minutes to work when a motorcycle can do it in 10, and cheap at about 80+mpg. Also in my experience I've made friends with women through motorbikes, so thats bollocks. Then emissions, if it uses less fuel then there's more natural resources.

First bike I got was a Suzuki TC125. A true barn find, back in the 80s before "barn find" was a thing. I was a poor kid who had to learn how everything worked so I could get it working. No google, didn't know such things as workshop manuals existed and probably wouldn't find anything but confused blank stares if I asked at my small town's library.
Got her going and kept her going for years. She's still in my garage although she needs more TLC than I can give at present.
She set me up for maintaining vehicles, especially bikes. My other bikes have all gotten well into the 6 figure mark and all in good condition. Only one, a mid-80s Shadow, needed anything significant prematurely, and that was new rings in the first weeks after I got it at around 60,000miles. I have no idea how the PO got them worn without other damage.
It's nothing for cruisers to get into 6 figures if they're maintained. If a car's not maintained it won't get there either. I've seen a number of bikes like litre+ CBR's happily get into 6 figures, even with things like ceasing timing chain tensioners.
Admittedly my experience is mainly with Honda and Suzuki, and other jab brands. But I cannot see why, unless a bike is thrashed and mistreated it won't last quite a long time.
With the price of petrol over here, bikes are far cheaper than cars to run, even factoring in all purchase price, gear, maintenance and registration costs! Of course, lane splitting vs sitting in traffic helps a hell of a lot. As does 1/3rd the engine size hauling less than 1/4 of the weight.

I got a motorcycle in part to save money. It worked out super well! $2800 bike, $100 a year liability insurance, and about $4-8 in gasoline a week (going to school, work, social gatherings, and the odd grocery trip here and there). That was 7 years ago, and while I've also had to put in a few hundred in maintenance, and probably about $2,500 in gear (cost of two full set of gear, my beginner and more premium gear), I've saved quite a lot of money. No regrets.

An army veteran and his wife, and a guy who wanted to know what the actual hell my pacific coast was.

as a 64 year old with 2 Victory Motorcycles I am now going to be self conscious about talking to other bikers if I am not riding. for about 40 years my motorcycles have always cost more than any car or truck I owned. I am one of those guys always buying accessories, never ran stock pipes, always trying different tires, endless small mods, changing handlebars, custom paint jobs, etc. Since switching from Harleys to Victory in 2004 I have about 160,000 miles on the Victories and about 18 different length Iron Butt certifications. All while living in Alaska, with a very short riding season. Have made a couple trips to Florida.
I am the old guy that always stops when I see a motorcycle and ask about mods, tires, gas mileage, stage 1 kits, always wondering what to try next. Even run a car tire on my crossroads. I have probably annoyed someone watching this video asking questions about their bike.

I disagree with that first point. I got into riding because i simply couldn't afford a car at the time and a bicycle was inadequate for my 40 mile commute. I got a really good deal on a cheap bike and it lasted me well through college until i could afford a decent car. A $500 car will absolutely strand you and/or get you fired, but there abound $500 motorcycles that will get you to and from work/school. add a $30 jacket and a $50 helmet plus negligible insurance/ registration and you have a very low barrier for those below the poverty line. Damn, I hit all three of these... But for real, I'm young, I live in a rural environment, I'm eco-conscious, I'm poor and I'm a lonely lesbian. All that being said, I bought my first bike second hand super cheap from a guy who was moving away and couldn't use it any more, it was poorly maintained and I've sunk almost three times as much as I paid for it into bringing it back to it's former glory. I may have wanted a bike for all the reasons this video says not to, but I always think back to watching my dad put together an old 125 in the back garden when I was young. I think about the motorbike road racing that takes over my country for two weeks ever year, I think about the freedom and the thrill that comes with riding and the responsibility I have when in the saddle. I think about how in looking to ride myself I was able to give riding back to my dad and how we can ride together now and about the stronger relationship we've been able to build because of it. So even if it's marginally cheaper, even if ecologically it's not as bad as a car but still not great, even if I never meet my future partner through riding well... I'm still going to ride, because I want to and in retrospect I've always wanted too. Whatever your reason when you start out, if you enjoy it, if you want to do it, you'll find any reason to keep on going.

On the topic of "once the kids arrived", I know a lot of guys who rode in their thirties but their wives wouldn't allow them to ride because the kids are small and they were worried he might die. A couple of them started riding immediately once the kids turned 18. Kids are also costly to grow and you won't have a shortage of money sinks.

I crunched the numbers to the point where I was comparing tires, brakes, fluids, fuel, and the added cost of gear(along with estimated replacement by time/mileage, Thanks FortNine for that video) 100 miles a day at 45 miles per gallon for 5 days a week, front tire at 10k rear tire chain and sprockets at 20k, clean and lube 2 times a week, factory brakes lasted longer than expected(highway riding) at 20k, did all my own work(I am a mechanic) with the help of my factory service manual.

Besides, I do all my groceries just fine with a top case and luggages and my bike cost me 500 bucks (DL650 from 2005), my father is a mechanic and taught me how to do 90% of the work needed on a bike. Overall, my gear cost me more than the bike itself but still less than getting a car I could restore in the same condition. The bike will last for a while and there's ton of spare parts to make it worth it in the long run. Though, no luck on the chick side of things haha

I think is really depends on what your are expecting to accomplish with your motorcycle, and what kind you are looking at. You are not getting a 650 sport bike and using it like a car, maybe a cruiser. But dual sport bikes are the most versatile for this due to the luggage options, you could do it with other types of motorcycles but dual sports just the aftermarket support with luggage options. I have done 500 mile solo road trips with it.

While I must confess that motorcycling has never gotten me a woman, but I will say that one of the key moments early in my relationship was reminiscing about my old motorcycle, like the young idiot I was I had bought an 80’s motorcycle, rode it until the engine broke, fixed it and rode it again until the electric system failed and I couldn’t find the parts or the time.
Anyways, we we driving along and I described to her the meaning that suzuki gs450e had to me at that time in my life and talked about the night’s cracking the throttle in third gear, my visor slightly open to taste the crisp air of a midsummer northern Michigan evening. She listened enamored.
It is impossible to show the emotion I expressed in that moment but she later told me that was a moment she knew she wanted to spend her life with me, because I was able to express the love and joy and appreciation for existence I had at that time.
A motorcycle may not get you a woman, but if you can learn to express your passion and emotion in a meaningful way a woman worth keeping will find that very special.

All that's been my experience with riding for 7 years now. I'd add that it makes the rider a better person also - more self-disciplined, more practical and no-nonsense in thinking, and more deeply confident overall. Your dad was right, it's kinda dangerous, and fairly expensive, being more expensive the more enthusiasm you have for it. You do meet a better quality of fellow human beings, and on more positive terms. I'd compare it to becoming a dog owner, but on the tougher side of things. As for meeting women, that's a myth. For every woman who thinks you're cool to have a bike, there are ten who think you're (probably) immature, undisciplined, and under-employed. The real disappointment comes when you're just being your friendly self with a woman fellow motorcyclist (in a parking lot or wherever). They're not rude, but they're too wary to talk.

Working on upgrading to a bike so that I can go a little bit further a little bit faster while still keeping my gas and insurance ($80/year btw) as low as they are. If it’s something that you can make work based on where you are and what you do it’s definitely not the worst way to save money. I can afford new gear every year or two a lot easier than I can afford insurance and gas on a whole car. Plus it’s a lot easier (at least for me) to do my own work on a moped or bike than get down into what’s wrong with the giant block of confusion that is a car engine

I would personally argue that in the United Kingdom a motorcycle is definitely a cheaper option, this is mostly because of our licensing in that you can only get a 125cc at 17 but the insurance is extremely cheap monthly or annually and you can get a reasonably long lasting machine for a approximately £995 or $1200 USD as you mentioned however, kit is a different story as I spent £180 on a helmet which is about $220 USD. On the other hand this is far cheaper than the £1000 minimum for a quality car added with the costs of driving lessons and tests. Not to mention the much higher insurance and cost of other legal requirements such as a more expensive MOT and labour fees for fixing a car. So in my personal opinion, a motorcycle is a cheaper option, depending on where you live, and adding the sacrifice you mentioned such as storage. If you read this far, have a great day or night :)

@cedrick I'm a motorcycle guy, a car guy and a truck guy, and I'll tell you that any motorcycle, even small displacement ones are fun to ride. Where as with cars, only sporty cars are fun to drive. Trucks and body-on-frame SUVs are usually boring but they can be very fun if you off-road them or go overlanding but they are sooo much more expensive than a dual sport or ADV bike for that purpose. Motorcycles are the most fun for the money in my opinion.

1975 CB 750s, 350s, 200s and even 125s are still rolling and many look and ride like they did in 1978 with a couple years of use. GL500s and up seem to last forever.
Insurance is dollars a month on those basic riders too, often less than 10. Mine is $5.50 a month basic liability and comp, since the bike is so old they would only hand me $1000 if I totalled it...no collision.

I legit saved money in college by purchasing a Yamaha Maxim 400 at a garage sale for $550. I spent another $1,200 for new tires and riding attire and about 40 hours of my own time going through everything on that bike to make sure it was in good working order. It was my first street bike, having just a little bit of experience on dirt bikes and I remember that first ride after I dialed it in (30 years ago!) like a meal ago. I sang Motorcycle by Love and Rockets inside my helmet. The little twin didn't have a lot of power but it had nice short gears and was an absolute hoot on the curvy low speed roads in the Santa Cruz mountains. Insurance was cheap on that bike (not a crotch rocket) and I managed about 50mpg commuting and high 30's on the back roads.
It's a miracle I never dumped it on those dozen or so times I stopped by the liquor store and rode home with a 6 pack between my legs on that bike!

Maybe it's because my father raised me on motorcycles but I feel deep, profound joy even just from sitting on a bike and feeling the cool metal of the gas tank beneath my fingers, the mechanical click of the key turning the ignition. I can't imagine life without being able to go on a ride at least once in a while

I live just outside London (uk!) and commute in on my bike. Saves at least an hour a day timewise and never get completely "stuck", plus £15/day congestion charge, £1500+/year parking, not to mention capital cost of buying the vehicle. Downside moneywise is buying lots of waterproof & heated gear. Overall though it still saves money. Train/tube is a pain; unreliable and slow, and no good for nightshifts.

He's being realistic.. which I appreciate. If I could i'd own every form of transportation on the planet but $$ and space. I currently use a bicycle, e-bike and car (for distance and cargo).. I could do a motorcycle again but can't justify the insurance. Depending on your circumstances I'd suggest at least giving a motorcycle a try, it's still the best option for stretching gas vs distance and unlike a car it really connects you to the world around where you drive, and of course that feeling of freedom and speed.

Maybe not in North America, but where I'm from, around 50 years ago men started riding those 2 stroke 50 and 70cc motorcycles. They used them for everything. To go to work, to go shopping, to go out on the weekends. To this day I know many and see a few more who still use the same motorcycles for their daily commute.

Laughs in BMW with 150k on the odo
But yeah really depends on the bike and how you drive it. A bike designed to be used a daily will rack up a lot of highway miles and keep doing that a loooooong time.

The money thing probably holds in the states... But there's a definite element of what use you put each vehicle to, its power/engine size (and these days, if its electric), fuel prices etc.
Mine was a 125cc, for commuting only, when the annual bill for feeding my car just to get to and from work came to more than the bike plus the training (with the other things then paying off further down the line). 30 miles a day, at 35mpg, and £5 per gallon or more, soon adds up, vs something that manages 100+ mpg. The constituents aren't as good, but it's burning so much less that the overall exhaust is reduced. Not the 135 to 105 unclear units of your graph, but more like 135 to 50 or less for the CO2 (and this is starting with a car that's vaguely frugal vs a lot of US models so the change might actually be a lot more vs your example car), with other bars scaling accordingly. And the actual standards bikes are held to are coming increasingly into line with those of cars (plus the old jalopy I had at the time was very much not a high scorer on that front anyway, moreso vs the actually more stringent US regs of the time).
Gear, I got partly from ebay where crash damage wasn't likely to be an issue (plenty of people giving up after a few hundred miles...), and made smart choices for what had to be bought new with good advice and reviews. Turns out you can get a helmet with a 5* govt crash rating, flip front and decent comfort for a bare £100... And scaphoid protecting waterproof gloves don't break the bank, nor boots that are styled such that you can get away with wearing them as shoes at work. As for load carrying... There's backpacks which double as lightweight hiking gear, pretty much. More than sufficient for all my work gear, or clothing for a weekend away, and in fact I've had week long trips abroad where I used that same bag as carry on luggage and didn't put anything in the hold. I rarely take more in the car than I could manage on the bike unless the point of the trip is outright transporting those items, I'm doing all my Christmas shopping at once, or it's a camping mission. Cold is dealt with by layering up (and decent tyres plus cheap hotgrips).
Insurance? I don't think I've ever paid more than a third of what it costs me to cover the car. Benefit of low capacity and a clean record...

Motorcycles are more of a daydream topic for me. I don't know if I'll ever get one, but the thought of having a near silent one with a storage cube behind where I sit, kind of like the Trail 125, then driving home at 5 a.m. after filling the cube with apples or whatever is a really chill thought. Especially if there aren't any other vehicles on the road. I think about that situation a lot.

Yeah, I get stopped at gas stations all the time by guys wanting to talk about the bikes they used to ride.
I had one girl interact with me because of the bike - it was at 90mph on the highway, and she accelerated beside me and beckoned for me to follow her. It was also my very first day on said bike (2020 Superduke GT), and I was seconds away from my exit to go back home to my wife.
Truthfully, the girl probably just wanted to talk to me about my car's extended warranty, so I don't know if the story even counts.

I first bought a motorcycle as in the UK its so expensive to get a car at the age of 17 even when you factor in the bike, the gear and insurance a bike is just cheaper. I carried on owning/riding motorcycles even though I now have a car as its clears my head and help's my state of mind. For most owning a motorbike is a frame of mind you can't put a cost on.
