  • Discover how Affinity Photo 1.9’s new Astrophotography Stack workspace now transforms the app into a start-to-finish solution for astrophotography post production. In this tutorial we're stacking and editing a bi-colour HaOIII composition of the Orion Nebula.

This is a game changer! New to astrophotography and struggling with less user friendly options for stacking and processing, Affinity looks like the perfect solution, and it's great to have advice from someone who has so much experience with the programme. Thanks!

Awesome video! I purchased Affinity Photo specifically to edit my astro images - even before I purchased my astro gear. Because EVERYONE had tutorials using that OTHER software I just played around and experimented until I "fell" into a work flow that worked for me. BUT I never knew about the stacking and astro features until I upgraded to Affinity Photo 2 recently. Apart from my image acquisition, I do everything else in Affinity now. And now that I moved from a DSLR to OSC cooled Im on another learning curve. So I was so glad to see this and other astro tutorials you have done and new tools and ideas from this video I can practice with - THANK YOU

Excellent tutorial again. The more I work with the Affinity products the more I am convinced that Affinity holds the future. I love the Astro workspace and hope to see more enhancements are coming. One thing would be good for another tutorial is stacking in Groups. I have done this and seems to work out fine. But a bit more explanation on what is happening in the background would be great. I guess that when you stack in groups which have their own Lights, Darks, Biases etc, Affinity will first stack Group 1 than Group 2 etc...and finally stacks the group results into 1 stack. Correct? Really happy with my Affinity purchase which I did back in 2015! Keep going guys!

Brilliant James. It really proves that Affinity is truly a one stop shop when it comes to AP processing. 50% of this tutorial went completely over my head so I have a lot to learn, but with life commitments, limited time, it’s great having access to program like this with a very affordable one time payment without worrying about monthly subscriptions. Yes that’s right I’m referring to you Adobe. Absolute highway robbery and I hope Affinity has you shaking in your boots with its capabilities not only in AP but all aspects of photography. As for PI, very pricy but I guess justified to an extent with those folks with superior equipment and no kids lol. But really from what I’ve seen, there’s not a lot that Affinity can’t do that PI can.

One thing I found using the Tone Stretching macro's is they work best if you crop the edges 1st, else they model in artifacts around ragged edges from stacking into the result, giving too bright a stretch. Does an amazing job.

Hello James, please can you do a tutorial explaining the complete workflow for an astro landscape shot?
For example the Milky Way with a landscape in the foreground. How does the stacking process work here? How do you replace the blurry foreground of the tracked stack with the untracked sharp foreground?
    Thanks.

Yes… I’ve asked for that in the AFFINITY forum AND emailed him directly. I’m hoping they are listening.
Most photographers aren’t doing deep sky and would benefit from a tutorial on exactly what you have asked here
And, of course, we would love it if James would tackled this Nightscape blending tutorial.

James, thanks so much for the tutorial. I'm working on AP1.10.5 and the newest V12 of your macro set and having some difficulties. I cannot get the adjustment panel up when I double click on the Color Preserving Tone Stretch macro layer? Also, the channel mixer adjustment layer doesn't appear to have any effect? I'm working on your Orion Nebula practice files, btw. Any help is appreciated.

This is an amazing new feature of AP 1.9. Unfortunately, I don’t have such a .fit image set myself. It’s a huge difference between watching a video like this and being able to follow the steps. May we please have such an image set to download?

Thank you James for this tutorial. I have question about procedural texture. It is possible to apply arcsinh, log or ln functions in procedural texture in affinity photo? I would like to apply arcsinh stretch algorithm to image by procedural texture not layers :) formula like (arcsinh(beta*x)/x*arcsinh(beta)) where x is luminance value and beta is softening factor. Thank you. Second way is to create plugin for affinity photo. No SDK for affinity photo :(((

Going through the Astrophotography stacking & editing (Affinity Photo)
youtube guide @timestamp 10:50 we add the Colour preserving tone stretch as a Non destructive live filter layer (ndlfl)- however this doesn't happen when I do this using the latest macro release. This means that the next "colour mixier" step has no effect when placed on top the top linear layer... help.
regards DavidDo I need to change a preference or have the macro changed, brilliant tool set non the less - thank you James

If 2 nights data are out of line similar to a mosaic, can I adjust the size of the output image or will it crop to the size of the first set of images?

James, is there an "easy" way to create a mosaic in Affinity Photo? I find myself creating images in Pixinsight, stacking them and creating mosaics and then retouching the images in Affinity Photo. I would be nice to use one or the other. Thx, Dale.

I am only new to Astro Photography and Affinity. This is a great tutorial full of useful information. You mention how to do all of the calibrations, except the Flat Frames set up is not mentioned. How are the Flat frames taken? I am quite keen to become proficient in this process as I have access to very dark skies at good elevations.

Not sure how long ago you asked this question, or if you were able to figure ot out, but I'm happy to explain what I do. Put your camera into AV mode, then cover your lens with something to soften the light a bit - most suggest a t-shirt held by a rubber band - I use either a white paper box with the top open that slips over my lens that I cut and taped or a piece of white parchment paper. Depending on lens or telescope size, I'll use my phone with an all white screen turned up as bright as possible or a usb luminescent pad. Hold your light source up to the lens, they don't have to touch but it should be straight and covering the entire lens area. If you have live view, check that the image histogram is as near center as possible. Take a few test shots to make sure you're light source isn't creating lines or electronic patterns. If the shots have a center gradient that usually indicates you're good to go. I usually take 5-10/#of light frames. Also, dark flats are good to take. Switch back to manual mode. Cover on, match the ISO and shutter speed of your flat frames NOT the light frames (matching the light frame ISO and shutter is a dark frame). Hope this helps, or...helps someone who still needs to know 😁

Are you able to use this program for stacking with only light and dark frames, just light frames or do you need to have all of the above!

    • @JamesRitson
      @JamesRitson  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hey James, you can stack with just light frames if that's all you have (though you will have to deal with gradients, dust spots, hot pixels and other artefacts). Lots of remote telescope data will only serve up calibrated FIT light frames anyway!
