  • When it comes to music production, a lot of people tend to ask questions like:
    "How do you make your kicks hit harder?" or "How do I get that pumping sound?"
    The answer, Sidechain Compression. In this video I am going to be showing you how to sidechain using the stock Logic Pro X compressor, sidechaining my main chords/melody to a kick. The concept is quite simple but sometimes can seem a bit difficult for beginners or people just starting out. Essentially, sidechain is compressing one audio signal by using the trigger of another, this is what achieves that "pumping" effect or makes kick drums really punch through the mix. Although I am using LPX, the concepts in this video can be applied to any DAW such as: Ableton Live, FL Studio, Pro Tools, Cubase, Reason, etc...

      Question -- do you adjust your compressor with just the kick and target track soloed? Or should you adjust it with the whole mix going?

    you crushed this instructional video -- you started by simply breaking down the technique, what it's used for, what it does, and then illustrating how it's done; struggled through 3-4 videos before getting to yours, where they fumbled with that very important first step of "simply" contextualizing the info, i don't know why your video isn't being pushed higher by the algo. Sidechainging -- per your tutelage: is chaining two elements together in a track, muffling (compressing) one so the other becomes more pronounced-- i've learned, keep up this approach with your content.

    Thanks for this video. Just discovered your channel, which is awesome BTW, and this is probably the best side chain tutorial I've found anywhere so far. I was actually able to follow along in my own project. Quick noob question, would you side chain all instruments to the kick, or just a few? How would you decide what gets side chained and what doesn't?

    • @itstonyholiday
      @itstonyholiday  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you found the content useful, really appreciate the kind words.
      Use side chain sparingly, if the track needs it, great. If not then don't be afraid to not use it. If it's a mid-range thumpy kick then side chain it to the instruments where frequencies are clashing, like the melody. Use the same technique for finding out if you should or shouldn't side chain it.
      🙌 Thank you for watching!

      Samuel Brandt I’m having the same problem...there is no side chain window on the right hand corner in order to assign the appropriate channel!!! Maybe it’s because we have the newest updated version of Logic X Pro and they’ve changed it perhaps? I can’t seem to find it...

      @Meddie Bloom So glad it wasn't just me! (Not glad that you're having awful technical difficulties like me, just glad that I'm not going insane) I have the same theory as you, I just got Logic Pro X in late January so it's definitely possible that we have that newest version. But honestly, I still have no idea why it's happening.

      @Tony Holiday Yeah, same thing if you restart Logic, this has been an issue for me ever since I installed Logic about 3 and a half months ago. By "little button in the top right", are you referring to the compressor plugin? Because yes, I have clicked it, it just hides the preset selector and the view size selector. There still isn't any side chain input option. I'm still fairly new to the program, so I might just be making a really dumb mistake, but I haven't seen this issue discussed anywhere else so far. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

    • @itstonyholiday

      Samuel Brandt ya that’s interesting and yes that little preset and size drop down button is what I was referring to because that will hide mine. I would reach out to Apple support about that one 👍

      Being a true beginner, I watched your video “Logic Pro Tutorial | Ultimate Beginners Course (Everything You Need to Know)” which was great. I followed your instructions and recreated your song. I sent my version to a friend of mine who suggested I use sidechain compression to duck the volume on other tracks while the Aftershock Synth Lead is playing. I then tried to follow your video “How to Sidechain | Logic Pro X Sidechain Compression Tutorial” but your example only reduces the volume on one instrument while the other is playing. How would I reduce the volume of the other instruments while the Aftershock Synth Lead is playing? The way I did it (probably wrong) was to create four separate compressors on the Aftershock Synth Lead track, with the sidechain pointing to the each of the remaining instruments. The main problem I’m having is when just the Daybreak Beach Topper and Aftershock are playing, the Aftershock drowns out the Topper. Many thanks for taking the time to create these videos for those of us who are just getting started.

      I originally created a compressor for all instruments except for the synth which I think was wrong. I deleted that idea and created a bus and added a compressor for the synth that reduced the volume of the other instruments while the synth plays.

    i'm confused :( if the bass drum is it's own track, why is it side chain vs just adding a compressor and leaving it?

    • @itstonyholiday
      @itstonyholiday  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sidechain is used to trigger the compressor when only the track you've sidechained to satisfies the parameters.
      i.e. you might not want to heavily compress a whole track 100% outright, but you might want that style of compression whenever a kick drum plays in order for the kick to be really present in the mix.
      We use sidechain to trigger the compression only when singular other tracks play so that the rest of the time the track that is being sidechained can stay breathing.
      Let me know if that makes sense. Thanks for watching!

    Is it typical to put a compressor (no side chain) in front of the side chain compressor to bring out the punch of the kick?

    • @itstonyholiday
      @itstonyholiday  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. I used to do something similar when I started producing...
      In short, do what you want... if it sounds good, it works.
      Typically, my rule of thumb is just used good samples. That way you don't need to do much post processing, just mixing.

    Really liking your tutorials, but ‘do your research on it’ is kind of why I’m watching this. Like all the compression settings abs what they mean. I’ve watch several vids about compression but still don’t fully comprehend what I’m doing once I’m in the middle of a project.

    • @itstonyholiday
      @itstonyholiday  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Scott Morwitz appreciate the comment Scott. To be fair, this tutorial shows you how to sidechain and explains the basic principles of what it is.
      As for the sidechain component of the compressor that I say “Do your research” I’m referring to doing your research as to what sounds best. They’re all parameters that enable the compressor differently and will be different on each project, therefore doing your research is spending time on each time you use a compressor and dialing it accordingly. Not just “put this knob here, this knob here” kind of tutorial. That’s not how you get good with your ears.
