Very good video for once! You covered all the tools/sizes needed so I can line them out before I start and save a lot of trips to the tool chest. Plus, no fluff or bs for filler like so many auto repair videos. Well done!! Thanks
Very Good Video! Straight and to the point, informative with too-the-point instructions of what and how to do, and tools to use. WITHOUT distracting music and unnecessary B.S.. You have acquired another dedicated fan. THANKS!
Mine went out 2 days ago. I was surprised it was without warning, or maybe I just wasn't paying attention..... I just called a nearby place and they want $980 to do it. Thanks to your video I feel more confident doing it myself. For some reason I thought one of the hoses was a high-pressure hose that made it best for a shop to do it. Not sure why I thought that tho. Wish I had done it 6 months ago when I replaced the water pump. Anyways, thanks for posting.
Great video thank you for posting please note....in a lot of vids I've seen not many use a torque wrench improperly kudos to you for holding your torque for a couple seconds each time that's the difference in experience and techniques
I've done this job many times, and I'm still wondering why people remove the shroud and fan. Totally unnecessary. Disconnect neg battery cable. Take the belt off. Disconnect the alternator connector, not the power wire, take the two bolts out, set it to the rear. Disconnect the two hydraulic lines. Remove the four alternator/pump bracket bolts and one behind the pump. Slide the bracket/pump straight up, take it completely out of the vehicle. Then remove the pulley and mount bolts, swap the other parts from old to new pump, put the pulley back on, then slide the whole thing back in. Reverse process. Saves time and no fighting with the puller while bent over the front end. Sounds harder but it's much easier and saves time.
I did it the way you're talking about. But taking the parts off the front of the engine gives so much working room. And if the guy wasn't taping and explaining, it would have taken less than 5 minutes to get that stuff off. And as you get older, you get less flexible to work around stuff! But there's always another way.
As I get older, I find ways to work smarter and get things done easier/quicker. This is one of those things. But also, when you've done something many times, you've prob tried different ways and end up sticking with the best route. Reaching to remove the bracket bolts are much easier than pulling the pulley off in the vehicle. Everyone prefers to do things their way. No wrong way to do it as long as it gets done. Being a mechanic for over 40yrs, taking the fan shroud and fan out, then removing the pulley in the vehicle takes much longer and makes a difference on someone's final bill. I try to save people money, and not charge for things that don't need done. Removing the fan/shroud only gives you room if you're taking the pulley off the pump in vehicle, and plan to leave the mounting bracket attached to the engine. It's much faster to remove the bracket/pump as a whole and then pull the pulley on the bench or in a vise. Ea vehicle is different, but when you wrench everyday, you find tricks to make the job easier and quicker, which saves my back for sure. Next time you get qoutes for a job, and two places are off a bit, think about why. One is charging for doing it one way, the other is saving time and charging less. One took the fan/shroud out, the other didn't. The second you go over 1 hr, most shop round up. 5 min is the difference between paying for 1 hr or 1.5 or 2 hrs labor.
Should have the front wheels off the ground when your bleeding the air out and go lock to lock ten times. That's what's instructed in the Chilton's shop manual
Well done video, good technique. I've always pulled the alternator from the bracket, never thought about leaving it attached. I will be pulling a pump in the morning, so this refresher will definitely help.
Amazing video and my pump went well thank you! Only thing I’d add is on mine I had to take out the bolts from the backside of the old pump to put the bracket on the new one, something to look for mines an 03’ Silverado 5.3👍🏻
Very good video I didn't have a fanblade remover so I went the other way without fanblade off as the other gentleman did. Took everything out all together then removed power steering puller when it was on the ground. Both ways are good but not having to remove clutch fan was much easier. Thanks for alternate procedures.
Dope video. Followed it every step of the way. Now I’m trying to put the replacement in and have found that my bracket is different. I have two stud bolts that I can’t get out of the old pump to put on the new pump. I called Auto Zone, Advance, NAPA and Parts Authority and neither of them carry the stud bolts. I’m dead in the water trying to find for a 2003 5.3 1500 Chevy express.
Great video. My new pump isn't working right. Its hard to steer after i purged the lines. Seems to only want to work when its warm or lifted with no resistance. Bad pump? Anyone have thoughts
When switching old pump I did not have the back you said to switch over what is that for? Also this is my second time switching my pump in two days started dumping fluid again does the metal line that I connect to the pump have specific positioning
my pump just let go while on the way to dunkin. what a pain in the ass it is to turn that wheel without power steering, nice video, short and to the point.
Hey I have a 2005 Yukon SLT 5.3L automatic with 218,000 miles. All stock equipped. Doesn't make any noise of any kind, that's abnormal. Well kept and daily driver. I drove it out on the highway for 300 miles and when I exited Interstate it was in manual steering mode...stiff to turn like it had no pump at all. And the brakes were not boosted either. It's not the belt or fluids of steering or brakes...all good. No leaks. No codes. No smells. No noises of pump failure. It only does it at low rpms when coming to stop, under 700 rpm. It works fine when above that. And the brakes are unboosted when it does it also, but work. This is the pump I assume? Remove and replace eh? Suggestions of what pump brands you had success with? I'm eyeballing the O'Reily $72 special. Thanks!
as far as your problem you’re describing i would also say bad pump. as far as what pump the edelmann pump is good and has 100 year/1,000,000 mile warranty. $135 on rock auto. also got all edelmann lines and inline filter.
I get a random “traction active” message and lose power for a second from standstill acceleration and sometimes while turning from a stop. I rebuilt my leaky steering gear box and changed my bad high pressure hose but still have a small leak coming from somewhere else as I see small splatter marks in the surrounding areas. Could it be my pump/reservoir?
Thanks man. Has helped me a ton. I'm about to put the pulley back on. When installing it do you run it in until it bottoms out or how do you know how far to press it on
Was it squealing when you turned the wheel either way before you replaced it? I have an 03 silverado and it’s squealing when I turn either way at certain angles and the power steering fluid is full and it doesn’t seem to go down really I’m not sure what’s wrong with it I think the steering rack and pinion is bad too because it’s giving all the symptoms of it
I got a 2002 Chevy Silverado and like when my truck is still it’s hard to move my steering wheel left or right but I check if it need steering wheel fluid but no it was all good you think it’s the pump ?
Got a leak on my 2006 Chevy Silverado it leaks power steering fluid and every time I top off my fluid it leaks it all within 2 days and starts to make a nasty whining noise any help on what it could be ?
@@603Mechanicvids yea I checked the lines make sure they ain’t leaking seems like the bottom off the pump maybe faulty since I did purchase at auto zone. Known to sell faulty party’s
That fact its raining makes the diy video all the better! Funny how the weather is always crappy when you need to fix the car.
I've laid on ground while getting Serpentine on. Had to walk to parts store with 2 hounds in rain. Got ride back to truck😅🎉
By far the easiest replacement video I've found, thanks for posting bud.
thanks and no problem glad I could help
What was the name of the tool and kit
A job that I've been dreading, and you make it look like drinkin coffee and eating doughnuts. You are the man!
Last video i found made me not want to do it, this one made it look so easy and helped a lot. Thanks
glad I could help
There's one of the best videos I've ever seen on how to repair a automobile👍👍👍👍

Great video ! Step by step and easy to follow. Awesome job !
Great Video shots. They helped me get all the electrical runs back in the proper place. Just finished my wife's truck.
Perfect...this is EXACTLY what i need to know and very clearly done for my Avalanche.
Same thing i have to do with my avalanche does your steering wheel get hard sometimes?
Was it squeeking bad?
@craigoryrobie5676 yes it was and losing fluid

You helped me so much thank you so very much for this definitely subscribed and liked brother

Great video man really appreciate it
Great video and very detailed, how much power steering fluid did you need to add to the new pump?
These trucks are beasts. Look at the mud everywhere. Doesn't matter to the Chevy 5.3L.
Very informative and accurate...thanks
What else can i use for the water pump pully
You don't need to take that off. Just push the tensioner over and pull belt off pump only

The pulley holder you put the link for is a 2 pin. But there is 3 holes and you used a 3 pin in the vid. Will the 2 pin work?
yes
how do you flush the system before you replace the pump
So i did my power steering pump and now steering shaft seal is leaking everytime i turn the steering wheel any ideas on why?
Tighten up the bolts with the wrenach lol love it
Mine had a EVM actuator on the back of the pump. They stopped using them, but you’ll need an actuator bypass tube.
Thanks man. Has helped me a ton. I'm about to put the pulley back on. When installing it do you run it in until it bottoms out or how do you know how far to press it on
glad it has helped out and press it on until it bottoms out
Where did you get that little torque bar from?
home depot
what if my pulley is just wobbling would it need to just get tightened up?
You need to replace the whole pump. It's warning you it's going out

thanks 👍

it was squealing worse the more I'd accelerate, and the main shift seal was no good
Is this the same set up as an 04 chevy silverado I know it says in in title just want to make sure
yes
It helped me out a lot
Just used your video to do a replacement. Worked great, thank you. 603, you in NH? I'm in Alexandria
awesome I'm glad it helped out, yes I am located near Claremont NH
Great video

no

Got a leak on my 2006 Chevy Silverado it leaks power steering fluid and every time I top off my fluid it leaks it all within 2 days and starts to make a nasty whining noise any help on what it could be ?
either a bad power steering line or bad pump, the whining noise is from no fluid in the power steering pump
Thank you very much sir!
I also had this problem but the leak was from a tear in the driver rack and pinion boot
Excellent video
Bro I cannot figure the damn puppy pusher out. I’ve already installed the new pump. Just can’t get the damn pulley back on.
How much Will Cost this repair
for a shop to do it? or to do it yourself?
How long did it take you to replace the pump?
hour and a half in all
