I’m trying to imagine the response to Serbian militias if they were targeting UN personnel and facilities and journalists, hospitals, ambulances and press buildings. I certainly remember how the siege and shelling of Sarajevo was and is treated. There was no talk about Serbs being able to defend themselves and requiring a 5 minute long condemnation of Islamist militants and Al Qaeda among the Bosnians.

My family protested with our 10 year old in 2002 (and she remembers it fondly) but it didn’t stop the war. We may not even stop American war aid to Israel this time either. Protests since the 80s feel like hitting a tennis ball against a backboard.

It's interesting to hear their comparisons of the post-9/11 and post-October 7 responses because the things they actually cite don't make a lot of sense as comparisons.
Protests in 2002? That was months later protesting a war against an enemy that didn't attack the USA. The USA was already in Afghanistan less than a month after 9/11. Also, unlike with Bush, most Israelis are absolutely livid with Netanyahu.
Also they do that thing they accuse others of doing by seeing all of the response through an American lens. Except that Hamas attacked Israel, and not the USA. Was anyone calling for a ceasefire in Afghanistan in October 2001?

I think the same chilling effect on dissent at an institutional and elite level is the same. There have been numerous journalists, educators, media personalities, officials fired, officials speaking out being harassed and targeted death threats, politicians censored and booted (Sarah Jama), censorship laws against pro-Palestine protests, claims of terrorist supporter for even milquetoast criticism, likely more laws being written up to crack down on BDS and Palestinian solidarity networks. People scouring hours of footage from protests to find things they can use to claim anti-semitism and support of terrorism (similar to the kind of shit libs of tiktok do towards LGBTQ+ people or towards BLM) and get people fired from their jobs.

No but they should have. The American media machine is just that much more powerful. The Israeli attempts to manufacture consent make ours look absolutely beautiful in comparison.
The pivot away from 'hey why are our soldiers in Iraq' to 'hey why are our brave boys at war in a canvas coated jeep and dinner plates as body armor?' is something they should teach at colleges State Department employees go to.
