    The "heaven" twist is honestly one of the darkest, most ironic twists I've seen in any story, ever. It's such a perfect way of making Buffy's resurrection have a TRUE cost (beyond just summoning a disposable monster-of-the-week).

    • @SummerSolstice621

      I never thought it was a twist at all. I thought once she asked Dawn “Is this hell?” the audience knew she was in heaven.

      @@SummerSolstice621 I don't think that was obvious to most people, nor was it meant to be. Was it foreshadowing? Absolutely, but we know that time is all wonky in different (particularly hell) dimensions within the Buffyverse, so her asking if it's Hell could really just be her confused and/or thinking she's in a new messed up reality and that she's getting screwed with. It may not seem to be as much of a twist to someone nowadays, (especially to someone who can binge watch the show on streaming), but it wasn't necessarily a super obvious thing to fans that waited every week for a new episode during its original airing on TV...
      (Edit: I want to clarify that many fans at the time of airing had an inkling that she _might've_ been in a good place after her sacrifice, but it's the confirmation that she was _actually_ in "Heaven" that is the "twist." It was pretty ambiguous, apart from some foreshadowing with the statue wings and such, as to where she was and what happened. I think It's her admitting that she was at peace and felt complete that hits so hard to most people)

    • @bloodyneptune
      @bloodyneptune วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      @J_Mock92 Actually, I remember thinking she meant "am I _still_ in hell?" If she had been in hell, then was suddenly in another place that seems just as horrible as hell, it'd make sene to ask "am I in hell". The heaven thing was a total surprise, I figured she was in a hell dimension because of jumping through that thing

    "Every night I save you." MY HEART
    Giles' confrontation with Willow is PERFECTION. I love that he tells her the truth about her reckless actions and their consequences. I think that Giles understands that Buffy's death was the natural order of things. He's been aware of that from the beginning. Slayers do not live to old age.
    He's of course happy to have her back, but also deeply concerned about what this means, for her, for all of them.
    Willow's threatening stance/tone with him was chilling.
    I can't wait for y'all's reactions to the rest of this season.

      You'd think that after D'Hoffryn tried to recruit her and even gave her a talisman to reach out to him Willow would sit back and reevaluate her use of magic. Tara's mindset is to use magic for self-defense and help the gang slay demons. Willow runs to magic to not deal with bad situations that don't require it (her cheating with Xander, breakups, Buffy's death...), emotions and to feed her ego. She seems more happy (even smug) about her successful resurrection spell than her friend being back.

  • @circling-girl

    When she says she was safe and warm and "loved," that always makes me think that she felt that she was with Joyce in heaven. The way she looks at the picture of her too. It's never made explicit but I think it's implied.

    Something I’ve found to be really interesting about Willow is that her reckless usage of magic is not something that just popped up in this season. It’s been there since at least Season 3, when she tried to remove her and Xander’s feelings of attraction to each other, without his consent.
    We’ve seen so many examples of Willow trying to use magic to solve her problems quickly, ignoring the ethics and ramifications. So, to me at least, this talk with Giles has been a long time coming.
    I also am really interested in Willow’s subtle threat, because it highlights how defensive she is of her powers, as well as how prideful she has become.

    Honestly, Buffy’s friends infuriate me so much in these two episodes. “Welcome back from the dead, Buffy! You’re not traumatized or anything, right? Nah, you’re fine. Anyway, here’s a stack of bills we saved for you. You better get on that, Buffy. Why are you being so weird and detached, Buffy?” That Spike, SPIKE, was the first person to really look at her and ask “Are you okay?” And the there is the implication that Willow and Tara do not contribute financially…despite LIVING IN BUFFY’S HOUSE.
    As for the Watcher’s Council, they don’t pay her because they view Slayers as weapons, as lesser than the Council. You don’t pay a weapon; you use it until it breaks, then you get a new one.

      You forget Buffy's friends are also only 19 years old and in university. Also they do have previous when it comes to not having empathy for Buffy's problems and honestly that's not a shock when you think they have always held her up as the "protector" as something else. I love how his facial expression changes so much in a second, yet it looks natural, and how accurately he played those little nuances, the movement of his head, the quiet voice, that warm look at the end when he was captivated by seeing her again. It requires talent. All such things are not written in the script, there are usually general instructions, but when it's a professional, he fills those empty spaces and breathes life into the scene, making it real.

      @melaniejones1835 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      It's an amazing moment of Giles seeing himself in Willow, but it's sad that he feels he has to approach her in such a brutal manner. It may be the only way to get through to her (we'll see...) but I think this approach would inevitably make someone defensive because he's attacking who Willow is as a person (as stupid, as arrogant, as a "rank amateur"). In trying to save her, he's pouring out all his own self-hatred and shame, in ways that are incredibly hurtful to hear from a parental figure. I love the scene, but it's hard to watch :(

    Great reaction. But I think you glossed over a couple of things in your discussion: Willow point blank threatened Giles ("I'm very powerful, and maybe it's not such a good idea for you to piss me off.")
    That goes beyond pushing back and/or standing up for oneself.
    Buffy avoided dealing with her bills and money issues by dumping them on Giles to handle. That is not his responsibility. He kindly offered to help her figure thing's out, NOT to do them for her.
    Because we've seen the characters grow, it easy to forget that Buffy, Xander and Willow are all just 20, turning 21 over this season. Still so young to be dealing with such intense life issues on their own.

      Like they're not even saying they'll get jobs or take more shifts (are they even working?) or anything, just gave her the bills and let it be her problem. Xander is the only one actually tryna help how he can. Giles could have advocated for slayers to be paid by the council all this time especially after being aware of Faith's situation, but he didn't. Anya was the only one with a good idea and she got mocked for it. Buffy could have worked like Angel, given self-defense classes, worked security or even as a cop or detective.

    • @johncampbell756
      @johncampbell756 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @user-dx2dm8oq8g Willow and Tara do not appear to be working. I'm pretty sure Giles knows that the Watcher's Council would expect Buffy to work from them completely under their control if she was paid by them. Giles isn't even paid by them. The difference between Angel and Buffy is that he is a PI paid to be a PI. Buffy often randomly encounters the demons or is sought out by the demons. It is rare that anyone actually asks her for help.

    I watched after death with 3 of my Buffy crew. When Buffy told Spike she was happy, a silence and sadness engulfed us. When she finished describing our world as Hell, my 3 friend girls were sobbing. Of course she was in Heaven. The greatest love that can be shown in Western culture is to knowingly and without hesitation to give your life for another. Why would Buffy, who almost always did things for others and at the moment where her sister and friends might die? Knowingly throw herself into the portal to stop s opening by sacrificing herself. Death really was her gift. The First Slayer told Buffy that she was full of love and she sharpened her love by trials. Giving your life so the ones you love may live is the hardest test and the ultimate action of love.

    The mistake they made was a false equivalency between what happened to Angel and what happened to Buffy, when the truth is they were very different things. The only similarity is there was a hell dimension portal. But in Angel’s case he did not die and his body was pulled into the dimension. In Buffy’s case she did die and her body was not pulled into the dimension.

    • @Talisguy

      However, it is important to keep in mind that they have absolutely no confirmation that the Buffyverse's afterlife works on Christian rules - i.e. no reason to assume that Buffy got to Heaven just because she was a hero and she died.
      It's possible that they were totally correct about her soul being sent into another dimension _because she jumped into the portal_ and she just lucked out massively. That she could easily have been sent to a hell dimension and just happened not to have been.

    • @cryptoeatstheworld3379
      @cryptoeatstheworld3379 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ no, that’s incorrect. A portal doesn’t send your soul anywhere. The portal is for the body to go somewhere. If you think about it, a soul doesn’t need a portal to go anywhere. She just died. But it’s true that they would have had no idea about whether heaven exists or not in some form.

    I really noticed a lot about Giles this episode that I think the whole Scooby Gang took for granted. In that early 20s phase it's easy to do the "I'm an adult too" posturing, but Giles STILL has more experience and knowledge. I don't think that "Giles wouldn't have let us do it" + "Giles is the only one to say we don't know where she was" + "Giles was the first one to leave the denial and bargaining phases of grief" are not a coincidence being lumped all together in this episode. I think Giles knew she would go to heaven, because if you think about it, his job and every watchers job is to at some point expect their slayer to die. How do you go into a job like that without some reassurances from the Watchers Council that your charge is guaranteed a heavenly afterlife because of all the good they did?
    P.s. I love y'all's upload schedule for buffy and charmed. Gets me out of my head before my weekend overnight shifts, which obviously can be a bummer. I always look forward to the videos so it gives me something to look forward at the beginning of my work week. 😊😊

    You brought your friend back from the dead and you are grumpy about her not thanking you? Buffy looks traumatized having to be here and Willow is in denial about it, if she was in hell she'd have ptsd and would be happy to be back. Willow subconsciously knows she messed up and is in denial. Buffy never asked for this. She could have tried to talk to Buffy from "beyond" with a spell and asked her if she needed help before doing something reckless like this. Giles is right and he senses something is wrong. He learned that magic has a price after his past caught up with him and the gang was there in high school, I knew he would go off on Willow. It's not the first time he warned her about abusing magic recklessly. The others didn't know how dark was that ritual and think Willow had no idea. She knew and didn't tell them so that they wouldn't back out.

    The difference between Buffy talking to her friends where as well as they mean its very overwhelming and chaotic. Then there is her talking to Spike who knows what it's like and is gentle letting her take the lead with questions. After Life is such a good horror episode with the hallucinations. Anya with "That's not a price it's a gift with purchase" We all love Anya. I think Buffy feels comfortable confiding in Spike more because he doesn't need her to be this overpowered beacon of strength while still being grateful for what everyone contributes. He just wants her to be Buffy. Cody catching that the camera moved to give her wings. There were so many little details to suggest she was in heaven before that reveal. Season 6 really goes "Oh you want to escape from reality and watch a fun show, here is existential dread and real life problems". Cody has a point, the Watcher Council pays their Watchers why not pay the Slayers? At the same time, they probably don't really expect them to live long enough to really experience money problems. Seeing angry Giles just makes me think Daddy. I love that in earlier seasons there was always the worry of the cost to repair things and it comes full circle.

    It really aggravates me that Buffy never got compensation for saving peoples lives on a daily basis and the way everyone turns on Anya for even suggesting it. This is right after we find that Buffy has been cleaned out of her inheritance due to hospital bills...for trying to save her mother's life.

    “She thinks she can just do magic and not have to worry about anything afterwards” 100% correct and if you think back to season 4 when Tara and Willow where going to do a spell to call a goddess I think it was and Tara made sure it failed, like Tara definitely questions her judgment. But obviously now that they’re so in love, she wanted to help willow bring Buffy back of course. I don’t think Tara would have had anything to do with it if she didn’t love Willow.

    There will come the day when I will not be on Giles's side. This is not the day. Willow was reckless: if she had the power to bring someone back from the dead, she could also have pinpointed where Buffy's soul was before feeling forced to do it. But she didn't even try it, probably because she was too excited by the opportunity to execute the resurrection spell and didn't evaluate any other course of action

    “Plus, fire…pretty..!” I always say it, but the main strength of the show is its unwavering commitment to change, development, maturation. As overwhelming as the last season was, the niggling details of modern life that Buffy has “awoken” to can prove to be just as or more overwhelming as a “monster or villain of the season.” It’s also interesting how much other character and relationship development happened with everyone else, not just Buffy. One of the very first conversations about the use of magic Giles ever had with Willow, he told her that using such potent powers could open up something she wouldn’t be able to close within herself. I think it was when she offered to try to “re-curse” Angel.

    Happy "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" Thursday evening(a day late)with Sergio & Cody! 😊
    Two really good episodes for this evening.
    Episode 6x03: The aftermath of Buffy's return. Buffy reveals a secret to Spike. I've always loved the moment when Spike sees Buffy for the first time since her return. And a great performance by Sarah Michelle Gellar during that last scene of the episode.
    Episode 6x04: Buffy must deal with a flooded basement, a pile of unpaid bills, and a demon hired by a trio villians. Giles returns. And Buffy gets a phone call from Angel(off camera).
    Looking forward to the reactions for next week's episodes. 😊

    Poor Buffy. Her friends can't understand what she felt and what she feels when she came back. Her clawing herself out of that coffin and her grave is disturbing and horrific, and l feel so bad for her. Willow is SELFISH AF in the beginning of this season and I'm angry that she just wanted Buffy to be grateful for being brought back. Buffy only being honest with Spike is very telling. It's very sad. I'd be depressed too.
    I'm gonna be honest, Spike was never my favorite character when I watched BtVS and ANGEL when I watched as a teenager/young adult but I have changed my opinion on him now that I'm older. He really cares about Buffy. Even without his soul which I think is admirable.
    Giles telling it how it is to Willow is great, but Willow being so arrogant ans selfish really gets on my nerves this episode. She definitely doesn't think about any consequences that could happen when using magic. She only thinks it's an "easy fix". It's starting to get infuriating. I also love and adore Willow but this season is hard.
    (Gotta say that Emma Caulfield's comedic timing is so damn good! I'm glad that we have Anya. 💚)

  • @arc7375
    @arc7375 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    Willow is horribly irresponsible with magic.
    You’d think it’d be far easier and more logical to first _communicate_ with Buffy’s spirit to ask if she was okay than to gather ingredients and objects (one of which is implied to be the sole one in existence) to rip open a transdimensional fissure between realms, locate a specific spirit, put it back into its vessel, close the dimensional gates, and restore the vessel to full vitality.

    It's hard to articulate a theology where a Slayer(this Slayer particularly) killed in battle sacrificing herself for the World, would be anywhere BUT heaven. By the same token, it is the height of folly to think that Willow, in her arrogance and intoxication with power, would be able to wrest her from Heaven AGAINST the will of Heaven.
    It was a respite, and reassurance...and then back to the battle.

    I may be over thinking this but that Angel plot point stands out to me more than it did when I first saw the episode. "There's a place." The delivery of that line didn't sound like a spontaneous decision of where to meet. To me, it implied familiarity and regularity. Was the implication that Buffy and Angel had secretly been meeting up before? It also stands out to me more how urgently she had to see him. That little scene is just so weird to me now.

    I’ve been watching this show since I was about 14 and one thing that bothered me recently that I never fully acknowledged is that buffy never gets paid for being the slayer. Giles does and all the people in the council do but she never does and I can’t understand why when she does all the leg work 🤣

    • @austinseven4720
      @austinseven4720 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      We know the Council are a shitty organisation. Slayers rarely get old enough to be bill paying adults. And let's not forget the potentially lethal 'trial' they put the Slayer through if she reaches 18. As far as they're concerned, most Slayers don't have a long enough life to need a salary, so why should they pay? Watchers are adults and therefore paid for their services. To quote Quentin Travers the Slayer is an "instrument" they use to fight evil. And a blacksmith doesn't pay their hammer.

    The Buffyverse's big bad being capitalism is usually not this literal, but it's also not new.
    In Anne, Buffy gets sucked into Hell (well, one of them.) Hell is a factory that sucks in young people, drains the life out of them and spits them back out when they're too old to work anymore. And Buffy liberates the workers armed with a hammer and sickle.
    In Angel, the ultimate manifestation of evil on Earth - at least from the perspective of the heroes - is a corrupt law firm. The show mostly focuses on their supernatural supervillain activities and their defence of literal demons, but we also see them do regular ethically dubious lawyer stuff as well - they defend mob bosses, murderous drug kingpins and corrupt corporations, and generally make sure that the rich and powerful never have to face legal consequences for their actions, for a fee.
