Instead of editing Patchy's phone number segment they should have just had the narrator say "PHONE NUMBER AND WEBSITE WITHHELD"

Still, the "Yikes Matey!" disclaimer works too. I mean, Nickelodeon probably didn't want anyone calling the number years later and getting, IDK, some sort of adult entertainment hotline or a cruise ship scam or something.
I've been watching SpongeBob since day 1, and somehow I never knew Shanghaied was a fan voting gimmick. I always assumed Patchy's mouth not moving to what he was saying was purposefully done to make the production look cheap for the sake of humor. I had no idea it was because they redubbed it. How in all these years did I never know any of this?
Oh probably because it was only ever aired in its original state once, during the actual vote-in broadcast, and from then on its only DVD release was the First 100 Episodes collection, not any of the season box sets. I didn't know until years later either

I could only imagine how cool that would be to be able to vote for Shanghaied's ending. I was unfortunely to young to participate back in 2001.
I did it online with my mom back in the day when i was a year old we voted Patrick though lol
@nolife6013 I was only 2 years old back in 2001 when this aired, so I couldn’t vote or participate either. Plus, I didn’t start watching Nickelodeon cartoons such as Spongebob until I was about 4 or 5 years old.
I was only 1 year old when this episode came out. back then I didn't even watch cartoons.

I had a subscription to Nickelodeon Magazine as a kid, and it advertised the "You Wish" special. I...could not be at home the day it aired (I'm pretty sure it was on my brother's birthday, march 9th). So I spent the next few years thinking it would air on the same date again lol.
To be fair I do think it was rigged. That number I called in 2020 and the last thing I remember it being was an Asian massage thing of some sort, and there’s zero way that people would’ve had time to vote as ad breaks are so short and they probably had a server overload online
I always thought the way Patchy said “Roll the cartoon!” looked weird when I watched this episode as a kid. This explains everything!
I don’t even remember the You Wish special. Shanghaied was one of the few episodes from the three seasons that scared me as a kid. The part where Squidward was thrown into the void scared me because I saw a baby head that reminded me of one of Sid’s toys from Toy Story.
I can understand it to save time, and honestly, I never noticed when I was a kid until people pointed it out. XD

I don't really understand why they had to change this line specifically. It just seems like a hassle without really adding any new information.
This feels like I’m listening to old stories that my grandparents tells me.
Like, I was born in 2005, so I grew up in the Nickelodeon Eras when the internet just used Nick as a punching bag for cartoon reviews. So it’s surprising for me to see a Nickelodeon Era before we had shows like Avatar or TMNT. Back when the Nicktoons were Nick’s primary focus, rather than the live action shows that Dan Schnider produced like ICarly or Drake & Josh.
I had forgotten about this, I did watch the original airing at the time and we called to give our pick for the winner but the line was busy or something, so I think they were always gonna go with the SpongeBob ending.
There is actually footage of patchy announcing the winner as Squidward and footage of him announcing the win as Patrick and for a while they were only able to be found in Spanish until recently when the English dubbed versions were found. Squidward and Patrick also have their own endings (both of which involve them getting eaten and don’t have much depth to them showing that they figured SpongeBob would win) this proves that it wasn’t guaranteed that SpongeBob would do the winner but it was very likely that he would be the winner. I think the reason the number didn’t work for you is because so many people will probably call on the same time.
Each one should have had subtitles because it is hard to understand both at once.

What's interesting is that the crew actually had Patchy scenes of the Patrick and Squidward ending winning
At first I thought it was rigged and Spongebob's was gonna win no matter what episually since Squidwards ending makes no sense like he doesn't really hate Spongebob and Squidward would realistically wish them free but no, The other ending's were planned to win incase they actually did win so Spongebob's ending legit won over the other two its really true

Anyone should film the “you wish” sequences and put them on their homemade recorded vhs tapes including the rare Squidward/Patrick wins
In LATAM we did not have the context of voting, but I watched SpongeBob's and Squidward's wish on Nick
Squidward’s and Patrick’s wishes winning are also shown the Mexican Spanish network Canal 5, which is no surprise, given SpongeBob’s massive popularity in Mexico
Wish it wasn’t edited but at least it still has it on the dvd copy
I never saw the original airing and only ever saw reruns, so I never knew about the vote until recently. I always thought it was weird that Patchy's dialogue didn't match his lips and never understood why that episode specifically had that quirk.

The bad lip syncing in later reruns is weird, yet funny.
About the three endings, I hated The Flying Dutchman in all three endings. SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward in the alternate endings too (well not in SpongeBob's since they're more tolerable in that one. SpongeBob and Squidward _are_ at least tolerable in Patrick's, but I think it's a dumb move for them to eat the last two peices of gum instead of simply giving it to the Flying Dutchman, considering he was about to eat them and that he's shown to like the taste after they got eaten in that ending.)

The DVD, Sea Stories was the first time I saw all three of the endings.
They should’ve put the you wish on vhs (but at least it’s on dvd, and that dvd is shown on the dvd trailer on the lost in time vhs)

Let’s just admit it, they planned for SpongeBob to win, this was clearly just ratings bait.
Tbf they did shoot versions of Patchy presenting the winner for Patrick and Squidward (you can find them on youtube) so they were prepared for the possibility that SB would lose
But yeah considering that the rerun version aired the next day with the SB ending in place, they were definitely expecting SB to win

If "You Wish Spectacular" and "Patchy's Pick" were MERELY merged together into ONE single episode, then guess what? "Shanghaied's" episode would be featured with "You Wish Spectacular + Patchy's Pick."

Yes. It's not often so whenever it appear it gave the feeling of special episodes.
I think Patchy is fine in small doses. I will say he is better utilized as part of the story than as a break from the story like in more recent episodes such as the 20th anniversary episode and Feral Friends

No i think it's an old sailor term relating to being forced to be on the crew of a ship for a long voyage, usually to somewhere far away like Shanghai hence the term
