What would you suggest?
As a Society we must ask why minorities from all background - ethnicity, cultural, religious, geographic, social-economical, education - are at the bottom of the heap, of our societies privileges. An interesting read is the work of B.Arrigo on his Society of Captives(SOC) thesis inparticular (Arrigo 2013). It looks at the forces & reasons of how society controls people and uses incarceration and other tools like Risk Assessment, fear and moral outrage and who benefits and who are harmed & why?

European Colonialism has a huge part in the oppression and repression of other racial groups, however not all minorities are at the bottom. Black people are at the very bottom, most black people who are descendants of slaves were never given reparations
some minorities do better than average others do less than average. It is not the case that minorities from all backgrounds are at the bottom of the heap. By religion the wealthiest group in the USA are Hindus.
Why are minorities “at the bottom of the heap of our privileges”?
Well, not all of them are. Asians, for example are doing pretty well. And racial minorities receive scholarships, which is quite a privilege.
And, racial discrimination fails to explain the shortcomings of particular races, like Black Americans,
since African Blacks come to America and are very successful.
So, the typical Liberal and Neo-Marxist (“woke”) victim-narratives are evidently and clearly false.

Firearms used in the incident had been purchased in her name two days before; a warrant for her arrest was issued, and on 18 August she became the third woman to appear on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted lis

@marinello6 5 While I applaud anyone concerned with abolishing or restructuring our prison system, the whole 'prison-industrial-complex' issue seems to me to be a red herring in most situations. Only 8% of all prisons in the US are private and most of that growth came after the initial decision to incarcerate massive numbers of minority and impoverished persons. Obviously, it varies; arizona has a massive industry that is supporting most of its current draconian policy.

Why is it possible to change your name and get a new social security card? And why then if one does so there is discriminate permissions to let those few who bother vote? Why not just eliminate the barrier based on a verdict and sentence, a "record", let all who pa their debt to society vote? Which is the questioned you begged?
I can't say definitely. But if it's a case of killing to live (push coming to shove in the BIGGEST sense), I possibly would. Otherwise, if the situation was too big, and no real help came, suicide would look too much like good (Not that I'd do it as it's too much like Bitter End).
I am 30 minutes in and I don't understand her. I think its her delivery that is not making sense to me. What is her argument? Does she want to get rid of the prison system altogether? Does she want to totally reconstruct the prison system? ........I mean. Speak in laymen terms at some point.
Angel Bishop yeah this is definitely not a talk tailored for the average person but pretty much she’s saying prisons are barbaric and they cause far more societal harm than good and we need alternative opinions that are an actual net positive to society
Jeo Jetson okay so I understood the part about prisons being barbaric but I didn’t hear a solution. She kept saying the same thing in a different way. Angel Bishop uhhhh wow ok. First of all no one should be insulted by the term average because success and respect should not be relegated to the elite. There are many different areas of which one can be considered average and this particular topic is her area of expertise and so by comparison most people including myself and likely you as well would be considered average and there is nothing wrong with that. She is speaking to a room full of people in her field. This particular talk seems to be centered more around promoting the idea of prison abolition as an area of legitimate discussion that should be thought about deeply.
well collectively there has'nt been any soulution regarding her topic on prisons because the power structure that have designed and install the prison construct system, to further subjugate and oppress a large and cross section of people in this country, to control as it were and for them to maintain power and profits I may add, on how this country is run and WHO will benefit overall. And frankely I will rather hear her and perhaps Elon Musk speak on anything, the marjority of public speakers in this country cant even compare,intellectual,expansive,insightful, far reaching in thought and persperstive, my take on them.
Angela Davis has over 40 years worth of work, writings, speeches, actions and interviews. This is merely a 1 hr discussion. She provides many legitimate paths. If u do a little research you’ll learn that socialism was one of those paths... and an overarching theme, which is present here too, is that perhaps prisons are integral to the idea of “democracy”- and if this is true, then there actually is NO solution present within the intellectual confines of democracy as we’ve grown it over the past few hundred years.
Uh BS. Situations will push you do to the crime whether the time is small or great. If REAL opportunities existed and communities weren't so depressed, the prospect of doing crime probably would be minute.
crime is an easier way of making a living than legal activities...that is its appeal...not the absence of opportunities.

There needs to be some sort of incarceration to instill fear for committing a crime. Although I do respect Angela's opinions.
Instead of deterrence (or possibly in addition to punishments outside of incarceration), why not focus on prevention, i.e. eliminating the causes of crime. Poverty, lack of mental healthcare, illiteracy/poor education, toxic masculinity, broken communities, these are the conditions that drive crime, even violent crime. It's hard to be afraid of consequences when you're already going through hell and have no future. I think that yes some prisons will need to be maintained for the few people who are truly impossible to reintegrate into society, but for the vast majority of cases, incarceration will only increase the potential to reoffend.

What crime? People are in jail for years because they are too poor to pay for bail. That means they are technically innocent. During their stay, they are subject to isolation and brutality then given the option of accepting a plea deal or facing 30+ years behind bars if they fight it and lose. There is no justice in America if you are poor. More than half the people in prison today never had their constitutional guarantee of a trail by jury. Wake up.

Angela Davis collaborated with totalitarian regimes in 1970's and 80's. She arrived in Prague in 1970 at the height of repressions after the soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia and crushing of democratic socialist movement under the soviet tanks. As a member of the Communist Party of USA she approved the occupation and refused to support human rights prisoners there. Blinded by ideology and silenced by gravy train she could not see the oppression around her. All her life she has been blah blah human rights activist. Ridiculous and shameless orator.

well not sure way it is taking folks so long to realize there is no such thing as a upotia or a remote chance that humans will EVER have one, look at the current state of the planet and our interactions with each other. The talk of human rights is a good thing beacuse people need to hear that to feel hopeful i imagine.but the idea of equal footing in any since is a oily eel with far more moves than we do.
