Kata - NICHO SAI - Matayoshi Kobudo

  • This is the first and most basic of the Sai kata in the Matayoshi system. This kata is the only kata to use only two Sai however there is still a throwing technique in the final part of the kata.
    The important combination which is the fountain of this kata is not only a fundamental hojo-undo but also through bunkai highlights the unique qualities of the sai as a short range but very brutal and punishing weapon encouraging students to adapt their distance and timing.

    I hardly am impressed by kata anymore. But this was precise, powerful, focused and crisp. His spirit was off the charts. Can't ask for more.

      @@DanielPyatt , I have one problem with the Sai. They are a bit noisey. I would ask after class with a big smile and then start laughing , " Do you have any rubber coated Sai ? "
      One thing that would freak out the students is if they came to class and suddenly the Samurai armor started to get up and walk. ( you could be inside waiting on them. 😀 )

    Nice, clean practiced motion. Good high blocks that go out. You don't see that very often. If I had one critique from a practical application standpoint, I'd recommend less constrained hip motion and blending the hip's to and from approach to create a more whip like effect. Maybe a bit more of a bend forward so that your center mass is behind forward momentum as well as contributing to it. That might be more of a stylistic preference tough. I do come from the Sikichi Odo lineage of Kobudo practice. Thank you for sharing!

    Dude has excellent control. No dangling around with the weapon .
    I don't like the screaming though, it's not how we do it in Japan . That's American way.
    Another things is you can see that he trains like hell. I would enjoy been his student. I don't like teachers who say there training his history.

    I performed this kata at a tournament yesterday and the judge told me that he would have scored me higher if I had “swung the sai around more” and he made a motion like swinging a sword. I had to bite my tongue. How frustrating.

      This is literally one of the stupidest comments I've ever read and I've read a lot of stupid!

    • @alexhernandez8758
      @alexhernandez8758 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DanielPyatt clearly your ignorance supersedes my supposed stupidity. The dachis waza utilized half waza of a karate punch versus what the actual techniques should be aren't clear to many modern practitioners who have lost the heart and true meaning of Okinawan kobujutsu. But by all means continue with your modern crap there are plenty like you who know no better.

    • @DanielPyatt
      @DanielPyatt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexhernandez8758 Hi Alex, I'm sorry but sadly it is your ignorance which is staggering. If your capacity to think for yourself if so limited I probably can't help you but please for the sake of sanity everywhere please stop and actually think about what you've just said. I'm fully aware of the various methods of "differentiating" between the two but bad body mechanics are still bad body mechanics. Don't be suckered into stupidity just because someone sells it as a secret that "modern" practitioners don't know.

    • @Theorof
      @Theorof 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex is correct. As someone who trained trained in Matayoshi kobudo during the time when Matayoshi sensei was alive and got to train with him directly a handful of times, this is not the correct timing. There was never any intent to "snap" movements. All of the techniques are meant to either build power from the feet up for attack or to be well structured for defense. The movements I see here are mostly just being done with the hands, and without awareness of what the opponent would be doing.
