Giuseppe Di Stefano è stata la più bella voce apparsa nel firmamento del belcanto tra le punte di diamante della Scala, dove ha vissuto innumerevoli e appassionate stagioni di eventi memorabili. Il suo nome e il suo talento ,con una dizione chiarissima, sono legati perennemente al sodalizio artistico ed affettivo con Maria Callas che insieme hanno registrato dischi di grandissimo valore artistico e storico...UNICI!!!
Di Stefano aveva un talento naturale abbinato ad una fonazione perfetta e ad un’insuperabile e ancora insuperata intuizione nel fraseggio e anche la Callas era tutta natura e spessissimo si lasciavano prendere dai personaggi interpretati splendidamente e unicamente e se cantarono spesso insieme fu perché capitarono allo stesso momento e nelle medesime condizioni che dipendevano dalla loro natura... Pubblico in delirio una meraviglia UNICA!

Di Stefano, without any doubt the best of all. Bet those Charros went crazy with so much high notes, and great singing. No doubts, Americans do not know how to appreciate such singing. Those two were just out of class. Best voice lessons to anybody, plus lots of balls !!!

Acabo de escucharlo. Filippeshi está increíble dando para esas fechas los sobreagudos con tal facilidad, pero el conjunto, interpretación,línea de canto, etc., este dúo de Di Stefano y Callas es muy muy superior. Un saludo.

Verdaderamente, qué momentos han dado esta pareja para el mundo de la ópera. Aunque me habría encantado que se la Callas se hubiera prodigado igualmente tanto con Corelli como lo hizo con Pippo. En todo caso, pareja fantástica. Y, qué casualidad, cada uno luego con su drama vocal.
Es cierto. Siempre me pregunté qué diantres le pasó a Callas en aquella noche, porque al escuchar el mi bemol de la cabaletta, parecía un hilillo de voz casi destimbrado, como un filo ya casi desafinado. Fue una triste sorpresa, lo cual resulaba chocante porque el resto de la ópera y sobre todo el trompetazo final con un tremebundo Re sobreagudo eran más que remarcables.

I'm not usually a fan of Callas but this clearly excels everything I've heard (oh well maybe in the relative league with Sutherland in the version with Filacuridi)

Corelli, un animal bocal, fabuloso, aun teniendo en cuenta que su rango vocal era diferente que el de Del Monaco, era más elegante y menos "comediante" en escena.
praticamente ha appena detto che ho ragione !!!!!!!!!!e cosa avevo detto io...del monaco e' un grande rispetto a filippeschi, cantante di secondo rango.... anche corelli era un grande , anche se non e' di mio gradimento a causa della dizione e del fraseggio troppo grezzi.... Il tenore piu' grande di tutti (non tecnicamente...ma "musicalmente") era per me (e per tanti altri) proprio Giuseppe Di Stefano...e sa chi e ra della mia opinione?...un certo pavarotti...e anche un certo Bjorling.

Estoy de acuerdo en cuanto a lo de Di Stefano, pero Villazon necesita unas clases de canto para aprender a emitir correctamente la voz y saber que a duras penas es un tenor ligero.
It was perfect until that awfully flat C#. It was closer on pitch with a C natural. Ouch. Up to high C Pippo had no problem, but I don't think I've ever heard him sing above that securely. He's still my favorite lyric tenor though.
@GermanOperaSinger A flat note or a transposed note does not bother me. When I listen to a performance I want to be moved. I want to feel the drama, pathos, joy. And nobody did that better than Di Stefano. He said it himself "Singing is more than just long beautiful notes, you must sing from your heart! This is Di Stefano!"
'Opinion' for sure. There is no authority to decide on what people hear. Listening involves heart as does singing. Di Stefano (opinion) had one of the most beautiful voices in the tenor lists. He used it with abandon but with open heart. He could have sung differently of course but he wouldnt have been Di Stefano and not as much revered by so many other great tenors. To them he was great but to you he yelled. Ur comment on squillo is provably untrue. Many great tenors were without it.

La nota interpolada por él, y la siguiente por ambos, es un Do sostenido (así como la última al unísono es un Si natural). Prueba a escucharlo en un piano y comparar tonos, incluso a seleccionar el fragmento en un programa de identificación de sonidos, lo que prefieras. Garantizado.

Lol. His first high D was FLAT and I don't think they are singing in the original key either. I can't understand that people can't hear this and yet they just love di Stefano to bits. It really surprises me. The tone is W I D E O P E N and he only covers his top from B upwards. It's just so ugly and common. Oh well, different strokes for different folks.
Way Jose. Callas was the most overrated soprano in history, IMO. You could drive a semi through the wobble on her top notes, even when she was in her prime. Her voice was nowhere near as beautiful or technically brilliant as Sutherland's, and she knew it, which is why she had to overdramatize everything she sang and never sang Lucia again after hearing Sutherland in '59.. Sutherland knew how to preserve her voice, and Callas did not or cared not to. People who say Sutherland lacked passion have not listened to the countless recordings in which she was completely involved in the character. All that being said, I do not hate Callas, and in fact have many of her recordings, but she never blew me away like Sutherland did. I know people who sang in choruses of Dame Joan's operas and they all said hers the the voice that had to be heard live, and no one could touch her. I believe them.

This is true, however, he did have a beautiful voice and there are many recordings of him, where he is fabulous, with Callas, so give him a break.

Beautiful, but the C could have ended in a better way. Seemed to instantaneous. Bellini isn't to be sung in rush. Beautiful, anyway.

As great as this is, the '66 Sutherland/Kraus version puts it to shame.
Sutherland has a sterile technical voice. Zero in emotion, as always. I still can't understand why people fall that much for Sutherland.
