  • It's the unicorn of all trains. Recently seen fighting the Delta Fire in Shasta County, it's the pride of the Union Pacific Railroad. John Bartell meets "Adventure" Dan Ryant, the man who got to ride it.

      EXACTLY! I was watching this in frustration because nobody cares about Adventure Dan and how he got his name. Not relevant to the story one bit. Very poor reporting.

    The BNSF fire train is being used on the 2021 fire in Keddie and Lake Almanor.

      BNSF has several fire trains. Used mainly to protect their own assets.

    Didn't know a firefighter train exists . I seen many things for myself as a firefighter.
    My hometown has firefighting tank with two jetengines from an MIG that blow the water that was already awesome.
    But that train topped it 👍

    I wonder if NY city has a fire subway train . With all the elevated rails in the city I'm sure it gets real tight for the trucks at a big fire in some locations

      As a native NYC soul. As far as I know there is no such thing. Maybe but I've never seen one. There are so many fire stations ems stations Police ECT located not far from just about any public transit line. I'm sure within all these services they have particular staff specifically trained to work in transit stations. Definitely the NYPD I believe they go by NYPD metro or transit.
      Another thing is lots if not all necessary stations have fire safety sprinkler systems.

      Theres no need, theres so many nearby hydrants, and entry points, even fire rooms at some stations, equipped with hoses, and extinguishers, subways are more like big buildings than railways in the forest

      @@eageraurora879 that’s the exact reason why there’s so many fire stations in New York. The general public can’t afford to wait for fire personnel because they’re stuck in traffic.
      Currently, FDNY operates 254 stations and 197 engines strategically placed throughout the city.

    Texas state railroad and grapevine (GV owns now) had Puffy, the southern pacific locomotive made in 1891 for firefighting

    Union Pacific needs to put some larger tank cars into that fire train because then they would have more water they could haul around

      That also means more time filling the tanks. Its better to have frequent short breaks than a couple extremely long ones, fire moves too quick.

    Seems to be only three tank cars. Why not more ?
    Could some one do more in-depth on the train .

      There is a tradeoff between number of cars and water hauled. Yes it would last longer if they had more volume. But as soon as you are out, you need to refill. And filling them can take longer than emptying. At the rate he said, its 2 hours to empty. Filling, depending, could take even longer than that.

      @@gravelydon7072 agree and understand, perhaps a purpose for the old style water towers , those had pretty good flow rates when filled or high flow pumps and source like a pond or river , at least in wetter years , with the large top hatches it would seem possible to fill quickly.

      @@heartland96a Most of the towers would not have been able to even fill the train. Yes it would have been faster filling the first two cars but the water would need replaced to finish filling the last one. Most of the standpipes also have been removed so they don't have them for fast fills. I've filled a light Pacific from a fire hydrant and it still took 15 minutes to do through a 4" fire hose.

      Idea: have 10 tank cars. Train pulls 5 cars out and fights fires, meanwhile other 5 are back at base taking their time to be refilled. When train returns simply switch the 5 cars for the other 5. Rinse repeat

      @@gravelydon7072 It'd probably take about an hour maybe two to fill those railcars. I used to do that at a winery. Fill railcars. There it took 3-4 hours but we also had the occasional pump failure or filter getting clogged so we never ran at full speed. If you ran at full speed and no filter you could do it in an hour easy.

    I dunno, looks kind of like it's been through a warzone except the windows aren't spattered with bullet impacts. Kinda cool seeing those engines covered in soot. Also unless they've ingested too many contaminants, those locomotives obviously have air conditioning.

      Amazing, isn’t it, that back then when we were doing everything “wrong “ the forests were burning up every year, but now that we have “progressive modern ecology”, and are supposedly doing everything right, the forests go up like torches every year.
      Then they blame it on man made climate change, and use that as an excuse to limit your freedom and tax you ever more.
      I guarantee you this is not by coincidence.

      @@scrappydude1 Climate change contributes to wildfires in multiple ways. Increased lightning due to stronger storms, less water due to drought, higher temperatures, etc. Also many of California's fires are started by a lack of maintenance on power lines owned by a multi-billion dollar corporation.

      Most of California's forest is federal land. Sorry you can't blame the state this time. The US Forest Service usually only completes about 1/2-1/3 of their annual prescribed ban plan.

      SP, WP, NWP and Santa Fe all had firefighters because they all had wooden trestles, wood lined tunnels, snow sheds and miles of track in the woods.

    The government state or Federal should buy up 3 or 4 hundred used tanker cars from RR. Fill them with water in the East or some place with lots of water In the winter. then park them all over the west. In groups of 10 or 20 cars. That way no matter how dry it gets out west the firefighters will have access to millions of gallons water.

    And, once again...the news gets it wrong. The Southern Pacific, the late, great SOUTHERN PACIFIC earned those titles with their fire trains. SP, SF, WP and a few others were out there doing those jobs. But, typical that the media overhypes everything they touch. Union Pacific is less than half of what the SP was......

      When does the media get anything right with trains. I once saw a reporter claim a train "Came out of nowhere and struck a vehicle" or "The driver refused to stop the train" in a grade crossing accident. Yes, an American reporter called the engineer the driver, and then could not comprehend steel wheel on steel rail + basic physics = trains cannot stop quickly. I mean, how low can they possibly go? Evey time I think they hit rock bottom in ignorance they whip out a jackhammer.

      @Wahsatch Rails Internet loser/professional firefighter. The water evaporates before the fireven gets to the areas which theyery poorlyvet. If theyvanted to make a difference, they would extinguish fire. Lawn sprinkling accomplishes nothing.

      Lol little do you know. This isn't a video game, it's real life and very affective. The flame and heat are big factors but the largest concern is embers blowing about and igniting dry material. The water soaks into the dry material and holds it in it for quite a bit, it doesn't just sit on top and dry. It helps if you actually have a clue about what's going on before you comment something like that. I'd say ignorance but I believe you're just dull. That's what happens qhen all you do is sit in your moms basement and play videos games, you don't learn any real world knowledge of any value, just video games.
