- Mellifera begins making preparations for a dangerous undertaking, but before she goes anywhere, she's going to need to recover her bow from the parking lot.
NOTE: This was recorded a bit before grabs were fixed. The zombies in this video are super-ultra-deadly. Getting grabbed is still bad, but it's been toned down a bit in the newest experimentals.
Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is a turn-based survival game set in a post-apocalyptic world. Struggle to survive in a harsh, persistent, procedurally generated world. Scavenge the remnants of a dead civilization for food, equipment, or, if you are lucky, a vehicle with a full tank of gas to get you the hell out of Dodge. Fight to defeat or escape from a wide variety of powerful monstrosities, from zombies to giant insects to killer robots and things far stranger and deadlier, and against the others like yourself, that want what you have…
Gameplay is from Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead's 2023-04-15 experimental release. Experimental builds can be found at cataclysmdda.o...
Governor Ackerwith's face was AI generated. No Governors were harmed in the making of Governor Ackerwith.
Music is from CO.AG, packaged with the game's CC-Sounds pack / @co.agmusic
Also featuring (briefly) Infectious Cadaver from Killing Floor.
Remember that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.

protip: don’t underestimate the planters in the mall. just started a new mall start character b/c this series’s rad, and dried rosehip pemmican (w/bonemeal tablets for dessert) has saved me so much vitamin guesswork.
I've actually been avoiding the planters as rose hips aren't supposed to be in season in spring, but that's just me roleplaying. It's great advice on a mechanical level.
@@worm-girlwhen it comes to interior planters its different than wild bushes, they were probably be cared for daily right up until the cataclysm and were in a climate controlled space so i dont see it as cheese, its a limited early access
There's something strangely satisfying about inventory management/stocktaking sessions in games like this. Into The Radius captures this pretty well in VR - it's common to come back from a scavenging run with a backpack full of loose bullets and cigarettes in weird places, but getting it all out and onto shelves is relaxing.
Agreed, into the radius does this very well. Considering getting into this game just for this aspect.
There are two modes for me.
The first mode is my normal mode, where I wander here and there and start a bunch of projects and collect a ton of misc and worry about my food situation and collect a bunch of mostly jam and horseradish and get irritated by my cramped and cluttered crafting area and make a display rack then remember that winter is coming so start making some winter survivor gloves even though it's the start of summer then chop down a few trees because my 3 charcoal kilns are just sitting there then go forage some berries, save, go to bed, get told off for not enough calories, get irritated, watch my guy sleep for approximately 10-15 seconds before noticing the nearby half-finished row of large wind turbines I never got around to finishing for some reason. I should do that. Wind turbines are good because they make me less reliant on solar which makes me less reliant on batteries. I don't want to rely on my batteries because some of them are damaged. I should really replace those damaged large storage batteries. Every time I check they're on 0, even at the end of the day. That can't be right. Hard to say. I have like 30 solar panels and 19 large wind turbines. Most of the solar panels were damaged but still. That should be enough to fill all my storage batteries. I guess I could save, write down the battery charges then wait for a day with everything turned off to see which ones recharge. Then reload, can't waste a whole day even for !!science!! Either way I don't want damaged batteries in my grid, that was only meant to be temporary. Can't repair them so should really just replace them. I have most of the mats for large storage batteries, just need to make some solder. Which reminds me: tin powder. I need more. Which reminds me: mining. How does it work? I have a pickaxe, and there's a crater nearby. Do you just use a pickaxe to smash the wall of the crater? Sounds safe, worth a try. But wait I need food. After the food. Crops take a fair while to grow, I can try mining while they're growing. After the turbines. First the crops, then the turbines, then mining. Or maybe I'll just do one wind turbine tomorrow, then the crops, then the rest of the row of turbines, _then_ the mining. Oh and my car. I've barely started my car. If my car was up and running I could go get all the chemicals from the lab I cleared in the town next-door, might be some tin powder in that lot. I can't remember. I left it all piled up near the entrance of the lab because I had to get home by bike. Couldn't carry much. Is a 20L basket really the best I can do there? Surely not, I should look into that. Has to be foldable though, that bike is foldable. But when my car is finished I can just pull up to the entrance and load everything up in one go. Won't that be nice? I'll need a lot of cargo compartments to finish my car, don't have them yet. There should be some in the vehicles around town. Probably. I guess I can do all that in the winter. I'll need good winter clothes if I do that, good thing I started those gloves. That's foresight. Or is it more properly prudence? What does prudence mean exactly? Can't rely on modern dictionaries, prescriptive rather than descriptive these days, or want to be. Damned zealots. Trying to destroy language under the guise of 'updating' it for their political convenience, overwriting nuances and distinctions centuries in the making. Millennia even, if you think about it. Because They Know Better. Imagine thinking that much of yourself. Ideological narcissism. Etymology, that could work. What's the etymology of prudence? Latin prudentia "a foreseeing, foresight, sagacity, practical judgment," contraction of providentia "foresight". Ha, so prudence literally means foresight then. Probably a bit broader though as a concept. So foresight was more what I meant. I still haven't finished those gloves though. Nothing prudential _or_ foresighted about half-finished gloves. Did I still have my compound crossbow when I was clearing that lab, or had I already lost it by then? I know I still had it when I was clearing the little town near the lab because I killed the incandescent husk with it. I don't remember using it in the light industry after the lab, and why would I have needed to? It's _possible_ I took it to the new town I started clearing for one night then haven't been back to. I didn't use it there but I might've taken it along. Maybe I left it on the road near my bike "in case I need it" but forgot it was there and maybe missed it in the dark on the way out? That would be a stupid thing to do, so I probably did. I was in a hurry as I recall, half a bar of health left on my torso. Slavering biters hurt, man. I wonder if that's their final form, or if they evolve into something even nastier? They already do decent damage. I should probably snipe them in the future. Perfect job for my compound crossbow. Where did I leave that?
The second mode is when I take my ADHD medication and suddenly my priorities become clear, their implementation absurdly simple. I work through them one at a time, step by step. Action replaces intentionm, function shapes form. Order arises from the chaos. I behold the new order as chaos is vanquished and lo! It is good. It is worthy. I bask in its glory. For the Emperor. Dopamine flows. Meds wear off. Back to mode 1.
@@jeffjones7108 you put a lot of work in the commentary :D
You did a good deed tho! Taught me the word "prudence" :D
@@SiberianOldPal Then my work here is done.

This series is my absolute favorite playthrough of Catacylsm since Rycon's Innawoods series! This one gives real Night of the Comet vibes.
Now I'm wondering if Mel has Kelli Maroney's perm from that movie, haha.
Yay my favourite midnight comfort youtuber has produced another yummy cdda vid.
Oh my god thank you for going into detail with pocket and container whitelisting. Once I made some of the high storage volume outfits for my character, my eyes would glaze over just thinking about managing her pockets. It looks very satisfying to have a well organized inventory system for a character like this, especially now knowing you can label containers to put in your containers.
I feel like I barely scratched the surface. At some point I'm going to create a specialized loadout with a place for everything. It's surprisingly fun to get it all figured out, and it feels good seeing my inventory somewhat organized instead of looking like the inside of my purse irl.
I got so nervous when you suggested going back out to get the loot. Overestimating your chances while wounded is exactly how you lose an established survivor in this game, and the fabric store cache was just guns and other nonperishable materials so it didn't need to be dragged home soon anyway. Leaving marked loot caches for later is just a good habit, especially with guns and ammo.
That western parking lot has been a death trap every time you've gone out there. The worst part is that it's hard to say if there's a way to make it safer, since it's close enough to town to attract a small but steady stream of wandering zombies. The eastern lot seems a lot safer.
11:52 This just provides the silliest little mental image to me of a group of survivors all coming back to base an unloading their loot and it's just random stuff dumped onto a table from random pockets, including said socks! XD
Absolutely appreciate the inventory primer, I'm currently a 60-some yo grandma living in a retirement community infested with blood raptors, and this helped me clean my life right up! Thank you, Worm Girl!
Always a good day when we get more of Melli the mall goblin. Thanks for putting out such quality content. You spoil us.

"we can cut up these cowboy boots for leather"
This hurt my Texan soul
Loving the series so far
I tried playing this game a couple years back, but I found it pretty impenetrable, and didn't really have the time to sink into it
Kinda making me want to give it another shot though!
It's really tough to dig into for so many reasons, but there's more meat on the bone here than I've ever seen in a game, and it's getting bigger and better every day.
you know what would be really cool? If the mall got an overhaul. We have the ability to do sub maps now, so we could randomize the layout of shops in the mall. Right now malls are almost completely static. The main thing stopping me is that I have never made a map on this scale. The most I've done is laid out one of the basements for evac shelter B.
We'd probably want more shop types than we have now just so the procgen doesnt spit out 8 clothing stores and 8 hunting stores, but that would be a cool idea. You could even do damaged/looted/etc areas, or places where other survivors holed up before you.
I also thought it would be neat if the doors had shutters, so you could have some of the loot randomly(?) blocked off.
It'd be a huge project but potentially really cool in the end.
@@worm-girl8 hunting shops and 8 clothing stores sounds less like a mall and more a massive Cabellas, especially with a kayak store, lol.
29:32 Fair fight… I don't think such a thing exists in a world full of monsters capable of smashing through walls, shooting organic projectiles/acid from 30+ tiles away with precise accuracy, spawning endless minions and regenerating all health back to full in a matter of seconds… No, Cataclysm is not about "fair fights" indeed. :) Using any trick available, from sneaking up using two cardboard boxes to throwing flashlights to blind your opponents… that's what I like about Cataclysm! Turning the tides using your environment end enemies' weaknesses, what can be more satisfying?
That's the first time I've seen a set of clown shoes that actually were a fit. Also, the way that mannequin was dressed I totally would've expected it to come after you Silent Hill style.
The fight by the mall entrance was quite interesting to watch, in particular the furniture rearrangement to block the Z's movement. I do try to maneuver so zombies have to cross furniture, but I always forget how much stuff you can actually move and re-arrange to make obstacle courses for them if you have the time.
I really appreciate that you go in depth into environmental manipulation in order to win a fight you normally wouldn't. I have seen far too many new folks just try and bash their way straight through enemies or mismanage their stamina. Also, good to finally see someone with more organized pockets than me. XD
"THE CLAMP!" Nearly choked to death on my tea when that happened :P
Initially subbed for fear and hunger, but I've come to find your cataclysm content like ASMR. Very easy to listen to.
Just finished going through this series, and I just wanna say I've been deeply enjoying it. You're fun to listen to in a relaxing way, and the adventure is an enjoyable half-story half-tutorial that makes me want to download this game all over again.
Just finished my endgame goals in my first CDDA playthrough and was craving more of this series. Good timing.
Every episode of this series is a treat, and is a good demonstration of a lot of the tactics you can use to bias fights in your favor in this game. Mmm, furniture.
Oh no! I'm all caught up. ;n;
In any case, great job! This series taught me enought oa actually get deep into a run, though I've messed around in CDDA for years on and off.
29:30 A bit late to the party, but I'll leave another option for newer folk: if you're not confident in fighting crowds even when funneling them like this, you could instead put some traps between glass walls, open the outside one and wait inside behind closed doors until all Z are down.
Some Worm Girl apocalyptica just in time for bed. Beats ASMR.

ep2: "Oh... that zombie was a child. That's fucking haunting". ep8: "Join the conga line of death lil' Suzie, there's room for everyone".
The game eventually stops penalizing you for killing them as your character gets used to it.

As usual, your videos pop up in my feed exactly when I'm thinking "man, I wish there was another episode of Worm Girl's cataclysm series."
Just when I was craving another episode of this series, Worm Girl delivers!
Bit late to the party - but another great episode. Nasty fight outside. The changes to the grab certainly were not the most friendly before they toned it down huh
These videos have been awesome for teaching me the value of traps. Thank you!
Worm time. Been having some luck in my recent run. Found a really comfy LMOE shelter and have been trying to renovate it while organizing inventory so this helps a lot
Happy to see this update. :) Thanks for making these videos.
If you don't already have one (and possibly a spare) there was a multitool in amongst the zombies you killed in the doorway earlier.
Good catch. I keep dropping them on accident, I have a few in storage but I don't think Mel was carrying one in this video. I should whitelist a pocket for them or something.
@@worm-girl The new inventory system sure seems like more of a pain in the buns than it's worth to me...
When I tried the update that introduced the system it annoyed me to no end and I kept losing stuff; your demo in your series is probably the best explanation for how to work it that I've seen.
Thank you for uploading this video! I had a day that was unusually bad today and this video will be the cure!
Thanks for another enthralling episode. It always brightens my day listening to these 😃
I have been waiting for this to continueeeeee I love this series so much!
Oh goody. The inventory management will surely help me organize my characters Hiking Bag. I've been carrying pouches and small cardboard boxes but those fill up the bag quickly.
"Goblin Mode" I love it so much. >:D
Im late to the party, but i love the storytelling and the pocket organization. Thanks a bunch
The bat plus that cap changed the tense combat in this run into "Purification in Process". Got the bow back, but I'm still curious to see if there's a good back-up weapon. Bow on its own gives me conniptions...
Got to say, pretty good so far. One thing I will mention is that you seemed to ignore the hairpin's. I get how it's a matter of loot priority and such. But the Hairpin's are very useful to have, partly because they are usable as lockpicks when you don't have the resources and tools to make some yourself. Granted you in all likelihood haven't had much of a reason to do so in the mall. But it's something to keep in mind as you go out and away from the mall towards various houses. Again I understand you are clearing out the mall first and foremost before attempting it. Just something I felt like mentioning is all. Great videos though! Useful stuff to have for someone like myself who is still somewhat new to the game!
seeing "severe pain" on the sidebar had me sweatin'
Nice! Been looking forward to this continuation!
you would not believe all the times my insect paldipalps were in the way of pockets. organizing was key! especially when your tertiary arms make it hard to sift through your front ammo pouches.
The linux fit with the clown shoes was fire, dont deny it. Clown shoes only run when?
A clown run would be pretty good.
21:59 Needed a Vine Boom to punctuate that goofiness.
I should probably download a bunch of meme sounds for stuff like this.
Just in time to give me something to look forward to at the end of the day!

@@worm-girl I would highly recommend using the favorite items button (*) on items before using category selection because it makes the item exempted from the selection by default. Favorite item can be wonky sometimes though like with bandages and lockpicks.

Time to file this under "Things I Didn’t Know I Can Do".
You can sell (used) maps to NPCs for an okay amount of cash, although granted there is so much stuff one can sell that it isn't that important.
just saw you emptying inventory and thought I'd mention there's a hotkey for selecting the whole category at once, for example food items, I have mine on Tab but don't think that's the default key.
the clamps!
You can make a "tool mod" accessory for vehicles and load standard batteries on to a vehicles power grid. Dunno what the specific crafting requirements are, but they have to be pretty low considering that ive done it on my newest playthrough.
I saw that! I'll probably try that out soon, thanks for the heads up.
Snack cardboard boxes were the bane of my existence until recently.
With the recent discovery of shrinkwrap, I always keep a few on me, with autopickup turned off.
Edit: Regarding them all being the same newspaper, I recently tried to put soap, shampoo, conditioner, etc on the same shelf and the snippets merged, making them all conditioner. Same thing happened with my book collection, except not conditioner.

Added: oh, you use it later. But what was the problem at the start? Just an example for the pocket management?
Seriously, this city spooks me out. It is the largest I've seen, and remembering the amount of "population" within a city quarter the size (in my current playthrough)… there is no way in hell Mellifera is gonna push through in any reasonable amount of time.
Are we feeling adventurous? How about "fording" this monstro-city on a bike? It should be quick and nimble enough for the streets, provided there will be no ranged attackers… Who am I kidding, of course there will be. Ferals for starters, and maybe even a shocker zombie in case of really bad luck.
Yet, some crafty vehicle action would be great to see.

I like WG's stories!
You always give some neat info about guns - are you a gun enthusiast?)
I'm not like a total gun bunny, but I think the engineering and history of them are really interesting. The conversations around them tend to be deeply political and/or emotional, but if you can temporarily set that aside and really look at the impact they've had on the world and how all the little parts work, it's pretty fascinating. I also love muscle cars for kinda the same reason.
@@worm-girl Yes, me too! It's almost impossible to own a gun in my country, but engineering and beauty parts - that's so cool
I have a feeling this might be an unnecessary comment 4 months afterwards, but you can press tab and the right arrow key to select all items in a category (with the exception of favorited items, and those can be selected as well with another right arrow press). It sometimes comes in handy when dropping lots of items for instance.
Something about the Rhode Island thing bugs me.
Providence is the capital and is basically a city state in itself.
Narragansett is just a beach town unless they mean the beer company has taken over which is semi plausible.
They're in Newport, which is on Aquidneck island in the Narragansett bay. There's a big naval base there, which I assume is why the governor chose to relocate there. It's the easiest spot to defend and they might manage to hold off the zombies if not too many of them went feral.
Providence is probably overrun with zombies by now just because of its higher population.
Really should use advanced inventory for this sort of thing

I really wish the pocket whitelist/blacklisting mechanic was either less tedious, or logical by default.
It NEEDS some basic QoL improvements like being able to copy-paste pocket settings or the very least to not automatically kick you out when you blacklist an item/category. Some niche specialised clothes have up to 8 or more pockets which makes pocket sorting extremely tedious to do.
I hate when my character is wearing nearly empty Large Rucksack on top of wielding also nearly empty Landry Basket, but still for whatever reason decides to shove his dirty socks and underwear in it's 2,5L Canteen, OUT OF ALL PLACES, which is also his *sole* storage for liquids out of his entire inventory.
Wicked
How have the updates been? I've been out for some time and crave building another laser wheelbarrow.
Extremely numerous. Somebody made a crab mutation line that's pretty great, a dedicated melee tank who can walk around underwater (water z levels work now) and is super good at unarmed thanks to its claw. Standard zombies are less of a pushover, and there are tons of new locations.
Oh, and things are finally moving over to use power grids. You can plug tools into your wall for crafting, batteries are on the way out for that sort of thing.
@@worm-girl anything else you can elaborate on? I've been out since 2021...
neat
Which tileset you're using?
Msxotto+, it comes with the game.
you dont keep jellybeans in your socks?
Not on purpose!
*groan* You need to manually ensure that you don't store gummi worms in your socks, and cigarettes in your drinking vessels, but various ammo types are automatically restricted to proper use _only_... This game sure has its share of galaxy brain moments! This is the sort of stuff that turned me off hard C:DDA, but luckily there's your fantastic LP :D
If you want the CDDA vibe but less meticulous gameplay, you might want to look into Project Zomboid. It is to CDDA what Rimworld is to Dwarf Fortress.
@@worm-girl Ooh, thanks, I might just check that out!
@@worm-girlnah, can't find any shocker brutes in Project Zomboid.
I think whitelist overwrites priority, doesn't it? I'll admit to being a novice with the ins and outs of the pockets settings, but my understanding was that an item will go to a whitelisted pocket over a general pocket, regardless of relative priority - which only comes in to play when comparing multiple whitelisted pockets, or multiple general pockets
I think you might be right. Frankly I usually just deal with the inventory BS, but I'm trying to display better habits for the sake of the viewers. It's a learning experience for all of us!
@@worm-girl I typically just up the prio on my backpack a bit an manually input some specific items (flashlight, guns etc.) into other pockets. This way everything goes to the backpack and I can drop all encumbernment with that. Its not perfect since when it is full we will start to put other things in jeans etc. but I try to keep them as empty as possible. In general since they introduced the scaling encumberance in sized pockets I try to have as few pockets on my other equipment as possible. I feel the encumbrance scales to quickly if you actually try to fill them up.
Only special pockets i regularly use are belts for crowbars, sheaths and holsters.
I also like to create a med kit box and a toolbox inside the inventory and put everything related to that in there so that I can hide the items from view. You can still use bandages with "a" or "e" but dont have to loock at your pile of meds when just opening the inventory. Do not recommend that for stuff you need during combat since putting stuff in containers introduces additional retrieval time (so dont put bullets in a case :) )
For the uninitiated: please explain what is the context behind Linux t-shirt joke?
It's just an extremely nerdy item, and combined with the clown shoes it really seems like a funny thing to find on a mannequin in a fashionable store in the mall.
