Just stumbled across this 20 years after the fact! This is such an amazing accomplishment especially considering the technical possibilities on hand. The fuel economy was also amazingly good all things considered
Mr Hamilton, My great respect to all of you who have made this endeavor. I commented here 6 months ago too. In the meantime, I watched this video 5 times again. Is it possible to upload it to Vimeo where it can be seen in better resolution? Best regards from far Croatia, Mladen Loborec.
Hello sir you are just an inspritation for me i am also trying to make one such. Sir i want some information regarding this and have some queries. It would be a great help if you clear my queries and guide me
If possible I would like to know the modifications made to the engine...s.... how much fuel... and specially at what power rate "Throat %" did they run at idle...
1. The valve springs were shortened (not smaller valves as reported elsewhere.) 2. The carburetor was replaced by one from an 0.S. 10 engine. 3. A power take-off was added at the rear of the engine to power an alternator. 4. A magnet/sensor were added at the propellor side of the engine to sync the electronic ignition. Les Hamilton
When TAM-5 successfully crossed the Atlantic in 2003, the team in Newfoundland asked ourselves the question: How long will it be before someone breaks the distance and duration records set by Maynard Hill and his team? By then, we knew just how difficult it was, but we agreed that the records would eventually be broken. However, as far as we know, no one has attempted to duplicate or extend what TAM-5 did. Note: the FAI created a new category of record (F8 - Autonomous flight) because the records set by TAM-5 did not belong in F3 - Aeromodels. Later, the FAI retired the records in F8, and unless there is another change in the rules, the TAM-5 records will NEVER be broken. Les Hamilton
OMFG! A couple of those guys are absolute icons of aeromodelling, you could do a much better job in the byline and the description for educational and prosperity's sake! I'd give it a thumbs up, but it's so poorly done!
It"s amazing. Why did it take so long to hear about? Thanks to Captain Joe. 😁
True determination and innovation. Where would we be without model aviation? Great video.
I got goose bumps when it came into view. Awesome job to all involved.
Well done, Even more modern technology these days would still achieve the same result, you guys proved it doesn't need it.
I read about TAM5 years ago. Stumbled on the video. Thanks for posting.
David, Thanks for your comment. I consider myself very fortunate to have been a part of this project. Les Hamilton
Thanks to the AMA I heard about this just a few days ago and found this video. Amazing accomplishment!

I would love to see this being done again with FPV system as well 👀
That'd be a pretty boring show. 38 hours of flying in a straight line? And constant height.
@@dabraze Forget the boring scenery. Think of the flight data you can gather from it!
Building a rechargeable system using solar n dc motor never touch earth 😅
@@dwyane2.098 DC Motor is less efficient compared to Brushless motors assuming you meant Brushed DC
@@dwyane2.098 it'd have to come down at some point, it'd run out of battery
That's pretty impressive for the time.
What a journey!!!! Inspiring!!
Too cool!!
Yea but how did it have enough gas and battery? I have so many questions.
Amazing :)
That is awesome! Well done!
