That is a GREAT idea!! Thank you!! I can definitely see that I didn’t spend any time talking about how they sound so I’ll get to work on a follow up video where I cover that. Thanks again!
That’s a great question!! I don’t know for sure, only because I haven’t tried it myself, but I would imagine it might. You might have to make it a pretty big dab…..but it could work!
Great question! Yeah, it’s probably the best idea to put some thin plastic wrap, just over the openings of the ports to better protect anything from getting in. Although I’ve gotten by without doing that in the past…the more times I help people with it, the more I recommend cover those ports. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!!
I never have done anything with covering the nozzles personally. The specific putty in this kit is pretty thick and doesn’t really deep into the openings. Even if some of it does, when the ten minutes are up, it’s stiff enough it pulls right back out again! Hope that helps!!
This video is great. the big secret is making sure your already biting down on what ever your using to keep you mouth open BEFORE you put the mold in and the waiting 24 hours for the curing before drilling your sound hole.
I think those should work!! What you’re describing sounds pretty much like the same material these are so I think there’s a good chance they’ll work the same way. Thanks for watching and let us know how it goes!!
@@TheHobbyMusician the silicone ones are not mixed and i don't think they harden that much, but I'll try, importing the putty mixing one is crazy expensive and would take a really really long time. When I do it I'll tell you guys about it.

amazing video and exaplanation, one question though: Is it possible to change earbuds? if i don't want to use a shure in ear monitor, can I use a mackie?
Good question! With these, changing earbuds from one set of molds will be tricky. Since they form to the exact shape of what you press into them, if the other earbuds are slightly different, they may not fit exactly into the molds you made. BUT! It’s super easy to make a second set of molds for your other earbuds so that you’ll have exact fits for both!! (I did that for two of my own different earbuds so I’ve got molds for each!).
How is the noise reduction? I can see this working for a vocalist but what about a drummer? Custom sleeves I had made by an audiologist block out a lot of ambient sound.
Great question! From my experience (bass and guitar) it works really well for overall noise reduction. But I don’t have any actual experience using these from a drummer’s perspective and I can definitely see why that might be different in terms of noise. All I can say is just that I’ve known a couple other drummers that like this style of IEM, I just don’t know if they used this exact method to get there! Hope that helps a little, thanks so much for watching!
thanks so much for uploading this! I always appreciate an instructor who covers EVERYTHING! :) quick question though - do.you use all of the material in the kit? isn't it a bit too much when pressing the in-ears in as well?
Thank you for the kind words! Personally I do tend to use all the material for my ears but your point is well taken, depending on how much “squishes” out when you press in the buds, you can certainly take away some of that excess so it’s not as bulky!!
That’s a great question! For this particular one, the putty was actually thick enough that it didn’t really go into the ports very far at all. BUT! I also know of people that have taken small pieces of plastic wrap to cover the ports, just in case…
@@TheHobbyMusician great thank you. I plan to try this in the next few days! My biggest concern is placing the sound port in the correct location during the molding to get the best sound result when it is all done. I wonder if I'll be able to wait overnight to let them cure!
I’m sure you’ll be fine! Even my first time doing it myself, they ended up pointing pretty much right where I needed them and I know what you mean about waiting…I was excited to finish them too and had to make myself wait😄
So does a custom mould basically block out all outside sound? You can also use memory foam tips with your IEMs to do that. What is the advantage of a custom mould vs memory foam tips? Do custom moulds alter the actual sound of the IEMs?
Great question! For some people, it’s a two part answer…making molds like these can often fill up ‘more space’ in the ear cavity than the foam tips can so it may seem like they might block a little more sound. Also, the foam tips will always be producing just a little bit of pressure outwards the whole time they’re doing n your ears (the foam is always trying to expand…). Some people find it gets a little uncomfortable after a while so these molds are a nice alternative because they don’t have that same behavior. Of course, these things also might not bother others so the foam tips are still a great option!!
Oh no! The Radians clay seized up that fast for you? I wonder if it might have been a faulty batch, each time I’ve done it I’ve always gotten a full ten minutes after I mixed the two parts together. In any case, that sounds like something that company should make right for you!!
I know what you mean! You could try a rolled up towel instead of the brush handle, it will have a little more flex to it and might help avoid the jaw pain. Thanks for watching!!
I appreciate the value of this video and it might be good for those who are just getting into this idea. HOWEVER, with that being said... there’s cheaper companies out there that do this for $150-$300. I personally went with Alclair, I bought a 3 driver model for $525 ($25 was for getting red glitter faceplates) and it’s much more visually pleasing to look at. I play in a church where I’ve got 3 cameras staring at me and having someone see those big tan things sticking out of my ear wouldn’t be good. You will find it is safer to have an audiologist take impressions. Overall, it costs $40 to get impressions done, Alclair has a $350 model but there’s other companies who have cheaper models. I’d say the price is worth more than the danger of sticking something in your ear like this and pressing an in ear in which then pushes the mold further. You can seriously damage your ears doing this. Again, very educational video and it’s a neat idea, I’m just too scared to do any of this myself and find it’s better to just pay the higher price.

@@TheHobbyMusician for sure man. Great video nonetheless! I’ll be looking for your review on the WAVS products. I’ve been thinking about having my church do it!
Great question! For this episode I was creating custom molds for my Shure 425 ear buds. I’ve also used MEE Audio M6 pros, and both of those are great monitors. Thanks for watching and I hope that helps!
@@TheHobbyMusician I would disagree. I was able to understand you perfectly. By the way, I just used your video to make my own custom molds two days ago and it's perfect. Thanks for your video =]
Great video. One thing comes to my mind - many newer iems have 1 or 2 holes for pressure relief and tuning. When you seal these you alter the sound.. so be aware of that and find an iem without, or see if you can locate the hole after..good luck with that 😸 btw do you seal the tip of the earphone before to prevent the dough to get in?
Great point!! You’re right about the extra holes for relief and how you do need to find and account for them (like drill extra holes, etc.). For the tips, I didn’t actually seal these only because this particular putty really holds together a lot so any that goes in…comes right back out! BUT I’m in the process of filming an updated version of this project where I will specifically mention it’s probably better to go ahead and seal it, to be safe! Thanks so much for watching and the thoughtful comments!!!
@@richie7782 Good question! I would use a small length of thread to tie around that portion of the wrap that overlaps the outer sleeve of the port. Doing that should help hold the wrap from slipping but also, being so thin, it won’t matter to the overall shape of the ear plug molds after they harden and you take off all the wrap, etc.!
That's fantastic! Thank you so much!! When we started the channel, we had no idea how far we could go. We're so grateful for all the folks who are tuning in and subscribing. Here's to the future!! Play on my friend, play on!
Great point! You’re right, people probably will all need to use slightly different amounts of the putty. Different IEMs certainly take up different amounts of space, as well as the size of everyone’s ear canals are also different. Thanks for adding that and for the kind words!!
Great question!! For WAVS specifically I would almost recommend that you don’t try this method at all. At least for the pair of WAVS that I got, the housing is both big (like you said) as well as shaped to sit as far in your ear cavity as possible. It almost takes the place of this putty method! This technique seems to work best for the more generic, round shaped IEM styles…and then turns them into WAVS! Does that make sense? Thanks again for the great question!
@@TheHobbyMusician I am at my wits end with IEM's...I can't get any tips to work - even with the WAVS...nothing fits.... So, I'm gonna give this a go with only half the material just to see...it's a cheap try and nothing to lose really... I will report back!
I totally know what you mean! The journey to the perfect pair is a long and winding road but you’ll definitely get there. Like you said, I’ll be waiting to hear how it turns out and who knows, maybe this is the solution for you! Good luck and let me know when you try it!!
Failure - there's just too much to the WAVs to create the same process you did - I am however doing what you do to a more generic set of IEMs I got off of Amazon...so far so good!
Thanks for checking back in!! I’m sorry it didn’t work with the WAVS but like you said, the quest continues for the perfect pair. I’m also getting ready to re-do the whole thing from scratch with generic (cheap!) Amazon monitors, trying to incorporate all the cool additions and tips from the comments. Definitely let me know how this round goes with the generic ones!!
This is exact comprehensive video I was looking for! Just got a new pair of In ears recently for my drumming but don't have $200 to spend on custom moulds. Do you have a link to the ones you used?
That’s great!! If you click into the description box under the video, I included a link to the exact kit I showed in the video (only $10 on Amazon!). Hope that helps and thanks for watching!!
I’m so sorry about that! I see now that I had only put the manufacturer’s link originally but now I’ve gone back and added a link straight to Amazon’s listing. Thanks for catching that and I hope that helps!! Play on my friend, play on!
Tried it and if you have a mesh or screen on the sound nozzle, it can get jammed with the putty and ruin your IEMs. This may be great for simple ear buds but if you have nicer ones I would not take the risk.
You’re so right! Depending on the exact kind of nozzle it can be tricky. We’re actually working on an updated video with those kinds of changes right now!! Stay tuned for that and thanks so much for watching!!
I saw in InstaMold custom hearing aid video that they have put lacquer to protect and maintain hygiene. Do you think this particular material can withstand lacquer or nail polish (adding some personality)? Cheers for the great video
Great question!! I don't think this particular kit/material would hold or adhere very well to lacquer or nail polish like you mentioned. Although I haven't tried it, when this material cures, it's very "rubbery-smooth", like it's very resistant to over-bending and the feel of it is very smooth. It's that kind of feeling that makes me think not much will stick to it!! Perhaps a different earplug brand might turn out differently? Thanks for the great question and play on my friend, play on!!
Wow! That’s a lot for molds! I’m sorry to hear they’re so expensive where you are. Maybe that can be something you pick up if you a chance to travel in the near future. In any case, thanks for watching!!
Great question! For this method, you’ll definitely want to take any other tips off, before trying to make the molds. This way, the mold will become the new “tips”, connecting both the entire housing of the monitor with your ear canal. (Doing the same job the tips used to do, just better!). Hope that helps and thanks so much for watching!!
Thank you for that! I’ve been trying to adjust them because some others have also had trouble hearing it, but I guess I need to try something else. Thanks for the update and thanks for watching!!
Followed these steps exactly and the first time i tired it, the sound was unuseable. Extremely quiet sounded terrible. I tried it again and the second time, the puddy got stuck in the in ear and broke it. So there’s a couple hundred bucks down the drain.
I’m so sorry it didn’t work for you! One time I had some of the putty get stuck on me too and with a little bit of working with something like a pin/needle, I was able to get it out. Was that one of things you tried?
I just messed up one of my in-ear buds doing this, so fair warning. For some reason the clay didn't cure as quickly on the right side of my ear, and it caused permanent damage.
Oh no! I’m sorry that happened!! Was it the same brand of earplugs in the link? I know that sometimes different brands might have different curing times. In any case, I’m still sorry that happened!
Sorry about the low sound! We were still trying to figure out how to edit and produce our videos and our sound didn’t always come out high enough. We’ve tried some new things with our latest episodes and I think we’ve gotten things a little better now. Thanks for watching!!
Techniques like this certainly do vary from person to person, and need to need. If someone needs pro level, all-day monitoring then maybe this method isn’t for them. Thanks for watching!
So sorry the volume is low!! Since this video, we’ve done a lot to try fixing that in our more recent videos so hopefully everyone can hear them a lot better. Thanks for watching!!
I definitely can get a little long winded! I try to add chapters at the bottom of the videos to help people skip through to the parts they want. Hopefully that helps!!

@@TheHobbyMusician legend thanks so much! Keep up the good content
No problem at all! Play on my friend, play on!
Did the amazon link get removed?I dont see it in the description area.
Thanks for the great question and play on my friend, play on!!
where i am at it is 109 euro for a set of molds without the iems
Wow! That’s a lot for molds! I’m sorry to hear they’re so expensive where you are. Maybe that can be something you pick up if you a chance to travel in the near future. In any case, thanks for watching!!
@@TheHobbyMusician i would say my ears are more important + comfort is way better
I agree!! Comfort is top priority and when it comes to ears, you can’t be too careful. Great point!
I have a question, is it better to have on a eartips on the iem or take the eartips off and use the iem by itself.
Great question! For this method, you’ll definitely want to take any other tips off, before trying to make the molds. This way, the mold will become the new “tips”, connecting both the entire housing of the monitor with your ear canal. (Doing the same job the tips used to do, just better!). Hope that helps and thanks so much for watching!!
watching.... You may want to check your volume levels.. I am on a laptop at 100%... can't here well :)
Thank you for that! I’ve been trying to adjust them because some others have also had trouble hearing it, but I guess I need to try something else. Thanks for the update and thanks for watching!!
@@TheHobbyMusician The contents were AWESOME! I may take your suggestion.. very well done!
Thank you so much!! I’m glad it inspired you to try it!!
Why is this man whisperering at me
Sorry about the low sound! We were still trying to figure out how to edit and produce our videos and our sound didn’t always come out high enough. We’ve tried some new things with our latest episodes and I think we’ve gotten things a little better now. Thanks for watching!!
Sorry, I would like to watch your video,. but. your audio doesn't. come through.
Oh no! I’m so sorry, I’ll check on that and try to fix it!!!
I do much an audiophile I built my own speakers from scratch I’ve owned pro built customs. DO NOT waist your time. They are a joke. Don’t waste $10.
Techniques like this certainly do vary from person to person, and need to need. If someone needs pro level, all-day monitoring then maybe this method isn’t for them. Thanks for watching!
Please stop whispering in these videos cos deaf people can't hear you even when volume is full blast
So sorry the volume is low!! Since this video, we’ve done a lot to try fixing that in our more recent videos so hopefully everyone can hear them a lot better. Thanks for watching!!
Never getting to the point...
I definitely can get a little long winded! I try to add chapters at the bottom of the videos to help people skip through to the parts they want. Hopefully that helps!!
