Possibly the greatest instrumentalist I´ve ever heard in my life. Every raga performance I´ve listened to him play is a scintillating masterpiece.

Some years back, in an interview, Khan saab stated sarcastically that in the times to come Indians may have to go the West to learn the Rudra veena. Sadly has turned out to be prophetic.

Seems like the west came to India, true nonetheless

Love from IRAN for India, people, culture and the Great Traditional Music 😍😘🥰I heard many but this Lady made my Yoga & Meditation Raag Madhuwanti is a beautiful, soulful raag, typically performed in the late afternoon, and it's quite well-suited for the Rudraveena, with its deep, resonant tones. Madhuwanti belongs to the Thaat Todi, and it has a distinct, melancholic, and romantic character, often evoking feelings of longing and devotion.
Here’s an outline of the raag to better capture its essence:
    Arohana (ascending scale): N r G M P N Ṡ
    Avarohana (descending scale): Ṡ n D P M G r S
    Vadi (most prominent note): Pa
    Samvadi (second prominent note): Sa
    Pakad (signature phrase): N r G M, P N Ṡ, Ṡ n D P
In this raag, the komal (flat) notes are Re and Dha, while Ga, Ma (Tivra Ma), and Pa are shuddha (natural) notes. The raag is best known for its subtle, gliding movements between notes and the delicate use of Tivra Ma, which gives it a unique and tender quality.
For the Rudraveena, the resonant and deep tones complement the mood of Madhuwanti, bringing out the longing and romance in a meditative, majestic way. It’s a captivating experience that highlights the depth and tranquility of the instrument, especially if played in a slow, contemplative tempo.
    iN ADDITION:
Raag Madhuwanti is a beautiful late afternoon raga in Hindustani classical music, known for its soft, romantic, and emotional mood. It is usually played in the early afternoon and is associated with feelings of longing and devotion. The raga belongs to the Thaat Todi but differs from other Todi ragas because of its shuddha (natural) ma, rather than the komal (flat) ma.
On the Rudraveena, a rare and ancient Indian instrument known for its deeply resonant and meditative sound, Raag Madhuwanti can evoke a powerful, emotive atmosphere. The raga’s scale combines both unique elements:
    Aaroh (ascent): N S G M D N S’
    Avaroh (descent): S’ N D M G R S
The key phrases emphasize Madhuwanti’s gentle, yearning nature, and on the Rudraveena, the use of microtones and the long, held notes are ideal to bring out its depth. This creates a serene and introspective performance, highlighting the raga’s emotional depth and the instrument's rich tonal quality.

One has to really be deeply calm, quiet and relaxed in one's consciousness to be able to play this instrument. Very mellow and Transcendental.

I don't know why they say Rudra Veena players are cursed.
I think it's the rest of us that are cursed - such beautiful music has left our midst and we no longer have the chance to be in the presence of this greatness.

    • @RudraVeena
      @RudraVeena  6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Well, as the world today in general has lost its senses for subtle things while running for more and more material achievements, the divine music of the veena and those who got lost in it are naturally seen as outsiders, alien to this world, cursed not to succeed according to its actual norms. And yet, as you rightly mentioned, this world would need nothing more than their music and the blessing it brings to the minds and souls...

This is an interview of ustadji in which he discusses that. Its basically a plainspeak version of what Carsten Wicke says in his comment but with some additional details.

    1. Body made by air
    2. Body made by sound

Thank you Carsten, 10 years ago but the memories are vivid! Concerning the 'India Muziek' and the Tropical Institute, it was a top-class venue for a long time. Before the subsidies were cut, it was already going downhill, thanks to the 'vision' of the staff. Before, with John Eijlers as the main artistic director, the institute made a very good name for itself. After his demise, things went rapidly downhill. I continued to be employed as a prof. tanpura artist but left the sinking ship in 2006.

So great to see the Ustad's facial movements while he plays the meandering notes. It was as if he was singing through the Veena. His head moving along with the ebb and flow of the Raag and its underlying melody. Such a divine performance. Thank you for the upload.

I would be very interested to hear raga Shri from Khansaheb. I remember clearly, when hanging out with you all, that in these days I used to whistle (!) raga Shri lot as it was so much on my mind, and Khansaheb could hear me from his hotelroom. So we got raga Shri from him, it worked like a charm! Also it was very nice from Ud. Mohammed Sayeed Khansaheb to invite us all to a wonderful home-made dinner courtes of his wife!

This is so nice. I play Saraswati Veena but not Rudra Veena. I would love to have a Rudra Veena. I find myself tuning my other stringed instruments in an approximation of the Rudra Veena and then play them. Of course it's not really the same. But you get the idea, I like the slow, low tones and also rhythms.
Can I ask anyone giving this video a thumbs down for some kind of explanation. I am curious as to why you would do that. For example: 1. You have heard much better versions. 2) You don't like the Rudra Veena. 3) You don't like Ustad Asad Ali Khan. 4) You don't like Indian Music. 5) You don't like Raga Multani. 6) Someone in your family or maybe you think you can do better. 7) Other.
It puzzles me when upon listening to a great performance or even just a relatively good performance on any instrument by anyone there are always those few who give it a thumbs down and very very rarely do they comment as to why.
