  • A note from Proverbs 31 Ministries: This podcast contains content that might not be suitable for young children, and may serve as a trigger due to circumstances in your past. Please see the Related Resources section at the bottom of this page if you need help finding a counselor.
When hurtful circumstances happen, we wonder, “How will I ever get over this?”
Lysa TerKeurst deeply understands that feeling. Since the release of her latest book, It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way, she’s received hundreds of emails, direct messages on social media and inquiries from people asking her how she got through one of the hardest seasons of her life.
Over the next few weeks on The Proverbs 31 Ministries Podcast, we’re taking a break from our regularly scheduled programming to introduce a 6-week series called Therapy & Theology: How Do I Get Through This? Our goal is to meet you in the middle of your hurt and give you biblical answers on how to move through it.
In the fifth episode of the series, you’ll hear a conversation between Lysa TerKeurst and her personal, licensed professional counselor, Jim Cress, as well as Proverbs 31 Ministries director of theology, Joel Muddamalle. Together they will unpack depression and anxiety, help you identify triggers and learn how to combat anxiety in a healthy way.
In this series, you’ll learn how to …
Overcome the feeling that you’ll never get over the hurt you’re facing by recognizing small steps you can take to get through the hurt, little by little.
Replace the negative stigma of “therapy” by gaining a healthy, biblical view of counseling for your situation.
Move toward healing today by discovering the two distinct and necessary parts of forgiveness and how to live them out.
Find hope in the midst of devastating circumstances by seeking restoration for yourself through prayer and proven exercises to help you process your pain.

This is so helpful. Must be a blessing to process thoughts with people who are so skilled, Godly and excellent listeners. I love how they brotherly love you. Whenever I feel depressed I always think about King David who said a multitude of times, blessed are those who take refuge in the Lord. ❤

I would have loved to have heard the Lamentations verse unpacked by your theologist, Joel. I think that there is nothing, nothing NOTHING like the truth to bring peace and wonder in the midst of all we struggle with in our journeys. I'm going there now to study that verse. It's sooo good. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Wow, “yet I will remember Gods great love, I will not be consumed” thank so much for this. I’ve had anxiety for awhile now but this part has been so mind blowing and encouraging because I have felt consumed. I just didn’t have the words for it because a lot of times I don’t have words for what it is with my anxiety, which makes it almost harder.

I love FIVE emotions. Too often, we are given a sheet full of emotions and trying to decifer 100 emotions, and by that time, we are more confused and we can't identify our own emotions

Thank you all for this informative and thought-provoking devotional. I was recently downsized for the third time in my adult life and it's brought up so much anxiety and my confidence is low. The verses from Psalms 42 and 43 along with the verses from Lamentations 3: 19-21 are a Balm of Gilead this morning. Thank you all for your dedication to Christ Jesus's ministry God Bless you all.

I love Joel. He's so humble and patient...not trying to jump in and show off his knowledge or be the "voice of God" in the conversation. We need more theologians like him.
Thank you for addressing anxiety. I was especially enlightened by Dr.Jim's description of what can happen even in the womb. I have always been the most anxious of my siblings even though we all experienced alot of the same trauma, but my mom had had two miscarriages before me, almost lost me and then dealt with alot of schizophrenia symptoms right after my birth. It's interesting to think that my neurotransmitters could have been wired a certain way because of that.

I love this, although I am so very sorry for all that you have had to go through. PTSD is interesting. They have found actually physical changes in the brain of those who have PTSD.
We are whole creatures, body, soul, and mind. This video addresses so well the soul and mind, but I think that there has to sometimes be physical healing from PTSD as well.
I have struggled with PTSD and I still do. My son was born quadriplegic, with a severe brain injury called microlissencephaly. By God's grace he is happy and comfortable now and doing the best he ever has, but we had many years where we had one medical challenge after another. It was incredibly traumatic. I can't even begin to explain it. A long with that we had some very hurtful things spiritually from A church we were in. By God's grace we found a really healthy wonderful church that helped us heal our spiritual wounds. But physically I still had to heal, since as the mom I was the one dealing with most of the medical issues and care for my son.
For me personally I found that there were certain medicines that I felt were given by God to help us heal. We found CBD for my son and it saved his life and has been incredibly helpful in managing his seizures. I started to use it too and it really helped. I literally felt a jolt, a shock, like the neurotransmitters in my brain were trying to realign in a healthy way. I also found skullcap and passionflower tea, both nervous tonics, meaning they heal're nervous system. I make a tea from them, and then mix with my own hot chocolate mix (Sometimes a healthy one I make with stevia rather than sugar and almond coconut milk rather than milk). I have felt a huge difference and healing from these. And what I love is they are herbs, from God. And God said he gave herbs for the healing and service of man. They are God's gentle medicine...
Of course without the hope of Jesus and His love, physically healing has no real long term meaning for me, because what I live and live for and what gives me purpose is Him.
But it is nice to feel physical healing in my nervous system, and be grateful for the good medicine he has given. I am so grateful.

Fabulous wisdom. I just found Therapy and Theology this week, and have already watched 4 topics. I’m so grateful for the content from each speaker, but I would appreciate more feedback from Joel. I’ve noticed he seems to be the last to speak and I have found myself waiting patiently to hear from him, only to find he is able to speak for a brief moment. I long for the theology content, by far compared to the therapeutic aspect. I thank all of you!

Wow! I really needed this today. I've been having a lot of anxiety and feeling frustrated so much lately that I keep exploding on people, especially at work. It's been a rough week and I ended up taking a half day off this morning because my anxiety was making me sick and I needed to "pause" before going in to work today. I came to TH-cam to watch another video and this was in my recommended list. God knew exactly what I needed to hear & I'm so grateful. This is definitely getting saved so I can easily refer back to it. :)

TABrownWV. I’m sorry to hear anxiety is causing you such pain right now. I was told the other day about breathing deeply from your diaphragm and how quickly it can bring the anxious body chemicals back to a healthy place. I was surprised at how quickly the body responses. The body chemicals made the anxious state, the body can get one back out of the anxious state. Praying for you today.

You comment about someone coming at you with a request, it's not the "getting it done" or the request itself, but it's about someone coming at me that is not expected. This................. is huge for me. I immediately get knots and shaking in my body. It has a physical manifestation in my body that I can't control.
