You would think I would get tired of seed starting videos, but I don’t. You have such a good way of explaining and giving explanations. I learn something every time. 🌼🐝
I would say, seed starting videos are my go to videos to watch. Coment: Yarrow does not need the “paper towel, freezer” process. I started 200 seeds back in September to overwinter in zone 9b it was hot, they didn’t care though, every single one germinate, multiple varieties all performed the same and even trough winter for my succession sow of yarrow, they don’t mind, some seeds like “sea holy, liatris, and lavender “ they can benefit from stratification. Well I thought I’ll share
For me, the seed starting mix worked really well to keep bacteria and mold down. I prefer it for seeds that take longer(8-10 wks), that I'll be starting indoors. I've also used diluted fertilizer to add nutrients to the seed starting mix as well. But for faster growing items, or if I start them outdoors with better ventilation, I'll just use regular potting soil. Your videos make me excited for spring!🙂🪻🌷
Moist. Moist. Moist. Wow! Great channel. This is all good advice. Thank you for posting. I'm in Zone 5 and getting ready to start growing my seeds. I'm so excited for spring!
My petunias are up!🎉. They are such small seed even the pelleted seed. Just press them on top of soil, keep moist and domed. I used heat mat at 75*F. They are sharing a flat with celery and both are slow to germinate. Planted on January 30th and as of today 13 out of 15 are up!! Make sure to take dome off if condensation is heavy and let them breathe. They are Very tiny to start and can easily dampen off. Once up take off dome and heat if used. It’s always exciting for me to see petunias germinate-get your magnifying glass as they are small😅. The cost of one Wave Petunia plant for 13 is pretty exciting! Edit: looked back on notes and it was the 30th I planted petunias. They were quick! Everything seems longer with cabin fever😂 Only grew one other time and I didn’t use heat then.
Thank you so much for your comment, it makes me feel better knowing that people have good results growing petunias from seed. I am very excited about these.
@@SoilandMargaritas because the seed are so small and you only get a few in a pack it real does feel like an accomplishment when they sprout. I’m not sure, but I think I have the final 15th one sprouting. 👏🏼👏🏼They were Sooo tiny I think that is the one I lost track of as there was pieces of debris and I couldn’t tell if it was a seed or not. Now I have to keep the moisture just right as they are so fragile.
I am so glad you posted this. Please keep these up! I learn so much from when you plant to when/ how long it takes for them to germinate, to what type of medium you use to how you choose to set up your planting station. Please keep these up, it helps! Thank you!
I thought I was trippin. I started peppers from seed for the first time and they are taking forever! I’m glad you mentioned that the poblanos took a long time. I’ll be patient. 😊
I really appreciate your process, and explanations, but mostly how you use your plants in the end, which feels unique compared to the other gardening/homesteading TH-camrs I am also addicted to. I feel like the way you use your plants is the quality and structure for home garden tours. I learn a lot from the way you design your garden.
No wonder your soil is so soft and fluffy you sift it how interesting I think I am going to have to go to the dollar store and look for some thing similar. I bought a bag of soil and oh goodness the wood chips in that bag was too much for me to bear but I had to use it because I had no choice. I will be sifting from now on great idea. This was wonderful again.
Petunias are so rewarding. I usually get close to 100% germination and as you said they are great to pop in anywhere. I also do a lot of geraniums for pots - they are so easy and grow to huge plants.
I got excited when I saw your starting petunias! I will be starting them for the first time in about two weeks too. I look forward to your updates. Happy gardening!
Hi Roxana, I love your content. It helps other gardeners stay on schedule!! I'm in 8b and I'll be starting my first round of seeds next week. I LOVE growing petunias from seed. They perform as well as; if not better than the "white pot" petunias...at a fraction of the cost. I've been buying my seeds from Swallowtail Seeds and others. I really like your grow room set-up!!
I’m in zone 8a, and I started my tomato and pepper seeds along with salvia and some herbs already. I winter sowed poppies too, and I have germination as of today! So excited! I also got some geranium and evening primrose seeds from Swallowtail Seeds that I’m going to start this weekend.
You could always place seeds on damp paper towel, spacing them a touch, do your whole freezer, light thing, then when they germinate just place the paper towel in your soil. Use the wider containers, or cut to fit smaller ones.
I bought a designated soil sifter (actually it was a gold panning sifter, but same concept) then when I was organizing my seed starting things I realized that the little vinyl coated wire baskets I bought from the dollar store will do the same thing 🎉 $1.25 from Dollar tree for a soil sifter instead of $25 yes please!
@@SoilandMargaritas Lol...I used a pasta strainer ...the holes were to big for spaghetti ...it would just fall through....great for sifting potting soil.....lol
That is so awesome to know about the yarrow! I ordered a different mix from Johnny’s this year. I will definitely try this! Once they get going in my garden, they go crazy! Zone 8a I can’t wait!🥰
I ordered Red Velour Wave Petunias, after seeing yours and came back to watch your video, because I HOPE to get the same result! :) You're the best! I live in 8b-9 FL, and am starting Jan 3rd, because I think it will warm up pretty fast, and some of my old petunias are coming back, which they did last year, also! They're in mixed purple shades, and I love them, but those red velour melted my heart, in your yard. On the side of my house (I'm a corner house and that side is also street facing) they would be beautiful with the yellow, orange and red plants I already have there. Thanks for this video and the one showing them in bloom.
Seeing the little sprouts come up never gets old! Good luck on all your seeds. I'm growing yarrow from seeds this year, for the first time also. I plan to do half inside and half in winter sowing jugs.
Those shallow trays definitely caught my eye. I think I'm going to give those a try. I have to admit I love the bright colors. Thanks for sharing your process Roxana. I'm excited to start my seeds too. Great video! The coleus varieties you are growing look beautiful. I haven't tried Mighty Mosaic. That looks like a great variety to try next.
Thanks for the inspiration. I'm getting ready to start some seeds, and this video was super helpful! Might add some petunias, too. You're right, it's always easy to find a spot for them.
Those plants will be so gorgeous for the summer! I need to start my next round too. I also keep my empty seed packets. It’s nice to know what you were growing 👍 I keep mine in a separate bin for just the emptys so I know it’s empty. It’s good to know in advance if you need to get more! 😊 Thanks! Good luck little seeds!
So excited to see your video today. I tried the paper germination on my yarrow, but didn't freeze them. My mistake was thinking they needed heat. Later found out they needed to be cold stratified and light to germinate. I'm using your method today!
Hi, Roxana! Where did you get the petunia seeds? I always love the colors you put together! I started ajuga ground cover seeds and only two germinated out of 72.😩 I’m going to be using a lot more ground cover in my beds, so I don’t have to spend so much on mulch. 😆
So as of Tuesday evening I have seen every single one of your videos even the one on Brandon what are lucky guy!!!! If you continue making videos I will definitely be watching. Now what do I do that I don’t have any videos to watch?
I am finally getting to my seed starting too. I usually start before now. You will love growing the wave petunias, I love them and they are so prolific. I lined all my paths in my cottage garden with them and they were such troopers, even came through some late freezes. Have you tried the 'not hot' jalapenos? Or the habaneros? I struggled to get them germinated. I like the heat but my husband's stomach can't handle them so having the ones that are not hot are great. I got them from Baker Creek as well.
You mean habanadas? Yes, I grew them 2 years ago, they did well but they took a longtime to mature, they were so late in the season but they were very tasty without the heat!
@@SoilandMargaritas Yes, those. I also tried the Zavory ones from Burpee but had a bad germination year (it was me and not the seeds) so I did not get to taste those.
I live in Florida 9a. Threat of frost is no longer. Is it too late to plant bulbs??? When you said you got yours at tractor trailer I have a store 1 mile away and I just wanted to know if I’m too late to plant 😢?????
Hey! Your weather is very different than mine, you can probably plant a bunch of things already, tulips need a period of cold for a few months, like really cold… you probably find bulbs that have been treated already, I would think that fall is when you plant these but I’m not completely sure on that.
Seed companies fill thousands of seed orders. What kind of machine or is it a person who actually counts the exact number of tiny seeds per pack? Amazing how the cost of seeds (and plants) has risen from previous years!
