Tristan is beautiful. And what an amazing brother.
When these young men have to fight the ugliness outside, they need all the love and support from their friends and family just to withstand the disgusting homophobes.
This seems to be the FIRST time that a school official in a film addresses the school about homophobia and its consequence ... immediate suspension. Should be the basic moral and legal obligation to all students who have ever been bullied.

Beautiful film. Maxim shines brightly, stealing every scene. I've read all the comments and would like to add that as viewers of film, we must put aside our longing to be spoon-fed every single detail. There is much that our imaginations can fill in for us, making the experience richer. Thank you for your excellent work, Robert Madden!

Thank you for a very good "Short" with a story-line many can relate to, and others need to see! Your poignant conflicts are realistic and can be found on almost any continent/culture. It's one where the struggle of finding and accepting ones self often comes with a BIG price tag, up to and including death.
I'm not sure I understand all the discussion on what you left out. While actually showing the intimacy between love interests (regardless of sexuality) satisfies the salacious lust of today's audiences, there's plenty of sources for that material on the limitless sleaze sites littering our www. In MY opinion, the intimacy and unconditional love depicted between BROTHERS which was so artfully captured, far outweigh some predictable sex scene.
In today's world, we'd benefit from more movies, and hopefully real-life stories like this, after all, Family first and Love is Love!

Undefeated is a low budget little gem of a film written and directed by Robert Madden. At first glance, one is led to believe it is a tale about boxing. But as the late master film reviewer Roger Ebert said about Raging Bull--This is not a film about boxing. Tristan is your not-uncommon high school teen with yawn-inducing accomplishments. He seems to lack motivation, he lacks in spirit and his Ma thinks he could show more liveliness. But his public persona belies an angst only later revealed in the narrative: He can no longer ignore the homophobic hostility in school increasingly focused on his very being.
There are minor distractions in the film such as some scenes transposed or deleted so that continuity seems truncated in parts. In addition, an announcement scene by an official about zero tolerance for homophobia at the school appears before Tristan is assailed, instead of after. And why did his boyfriend get such a micro part?
Tristan joins a boxing club and impresses his future trainer with pulverizing blows on the facilities' sand bag. After some ambitious training, the teen looks forward to a scheduled match... that is, until he discovers who his opponent is.
Our young protagonist is suddenly faced with a life-changing dilemma no growing boy in trouble can escape: fight, flight, or reason. So he walks away. In Stephen Crane's powerful novel, Red Badge of Courage, Henry Fleming, the teen enlisting for the civil war soon experiences the wonder of adventure, the double take on realizing he's in a war, the cowardice which paralyzes him, the realization that he needs to earn a bleeding wound in a fight before he can step on that stage of adulthood with the other wounded heroes.
But with Tristan, a violent incident involving a beloved family member eventually propels him back to the boxing ring where, after an epic dusting, he finally attains his own empowering, transformative badge of courage.
I'm looking forward to seeing more of Robert Madden et al's projects in the future.

Good film, the bond between the two brothers is very moving. Like some other commentators though, I do wish Tristan’s gayness had been shown more than just referred to. A make-out scene with the drama student (Elijah?) after the ‘I like your bracelet’ quip would have been more than welcome and would have lifted the film from good to great, in my view.

Question, why is the gym empty? No other boxers training, guys working out? An audience for the fight? Why did it completely jump from him getting jumped to im assuming having to fight one of the guys who beat him up, with no scene with his family explaining the marks? Kinda omitted a lot. Even the first scene, did they walk in on him kissing the guy or fucking on the floor? They went from just meeting to doing something to boyfirends in under 2 mins. Tristans coach is kinda funny, nothings a guarantee in the bag in boxing. ( the dude trying to sound like Rockies coach Micky lmfao not an insult, just an amusing observation) This film, has an amazing amount of promise if you're ever to secure a large budget, larger cast and stand ins. Would make a great lgbt movie giving inspiration to many gay youth boys. I would pay to see it then. Great concept foundation. Hope you can build on it.

I was hoping to see him with his boyfriend, alone and in the public. But feel like it was more about boxing then anything else 😕

Story plot was upsetting. The story line with the "boyfriend" wasn't developed as it should've been. Couldn't used more work. But nevertheless it was an alright film.

Robert Madden’s film “Undefeated” has the advantage of a charismatic lead actor in Maxim Trigub as well as a sensitive performance by Aston Burke Flynn as the brother. But these advantages are diminished by the filmmaker’s inexperience in telling the story of a gay youth who finds his self-assertion through the sport of boxing.
Occasionally, the genuineness of a film’s theme (as here) and the sincerity of its storytellers compensates for raw film craft, but “Undefeated” labours its way for 35 minutes through a storyline that is expansive where it should be brief, and brief where it should have lingered. Moreover, one of the most important lessons any filmmaker should absorb is to avoid scenes borrowed from film & tv shows whose construction are not clearly understood; the chief example here are the clumsy boxing scenes which are key to the film’s 2nd half.
None of these criticisms relate to the film’s low budget. I wish the filmmaker well for his next film, but suggest he work alongside a more experienced director shooting his script and that he sit with a good editor who, by disciplined cutting, can transform an ordinary film into a good one.

I appreciate your points and will take them onboard, however I disagree with a few of them. The whole concept of filmmaking is to develop your craft. Working alongside more experienced directors and editors is often costly, therefore requiring a stronger budget. Along with this, working with a more experienced director/editor would be handing the workload elsewhere which would take away from the educational and learning experience which comes with the challenges faced on such film. Obviously there are things I would've done different had I a strong budget.

This film misses out essential scenes to tie the story together, in particular, the gay storyline. Tristan’s sexuality only exists in reference, not in any actual scene, to the point of being ridiculous. At the party I honestly thought Tristan had been sick all over the kitchen, judging by his friends reaction and the fact she brought him water. After a brief hello, Elijah only exists in conversation even though they apparently spend a lot of time together? Then there is that random announcement about homophobia in school assembly, in regards to what?! If there were as many relevant boxing scenes as there were relevant gay scenes in this film, Tristan wouldn’t have even entered the boxing club, let alone put a pair of gloves on. You’re not really giving visibility, if don’t show anything.

Thank you for your feedback. The idea is that Tristan's sexuality does not play a large part in people's view towards him, instead he is judged and credited on his success.

agreed. way to get inoffensive inclusion points. Progressive without the risk. If the story combats homophobia or show the struggles of a gay athlete, make the athlete gay not simply referring to him as such. I bet my very bottom dollar that if this stoy had been about a straight boxer and the tough time he had with his girlfriend they would've been all over each other

    • @robertmadden915
      @robertmadden915  4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@giovannijacobs4496 Regardless of if they were straight or not, there still would not be anything of that nature. There are procedures which would require a higher budget to ensure a scene of that nature would be carried out correctly.

Giovanni Jacobs Exactly. Richard Madden speaks of cost to do those sort of scenes, budget. He shouldn’t tackle issues he can’t afford to fully commit to, it is really that simple, the film is missing key scenes to it’s detriment.
