Blind girl banned from using cane at school due to Health & Safety

  • A blind girl has been banned from using her walking cane at school because of "health and safety issues" - in case she TRIPS up teachers and fellow pupils.
    Lily-Grace Hooper, seven, suffered a stroke when she was just four days old, which left her virtually blind. But earlier this year a charity donated her a fibre-glass walking cane after her confidence soared when she started using cardboard tubes to help guide her way at home. But her mum Kristy, 38, has been left "absolutely livid" after a risk assessment done on behalf of the school said the cane caused high risk to people around Lily-Grace. Hambrook Primary School in Bristol told her not to use it in school, and the report suggested she have full adult support at all times, and she was told to "walk carefully".The move by the school and the Sensory Support Service - which does assessments for schools - has been slammed by charities.Furious mum Kristy, from Bristol, said: "It is a disability, but I want to celebrate it and make sure she can become independent. "When the school told me she can no longer bring her cane into school, I just thought this must be health and safety gone mad.

    And I suppose they'd also ban a child from using a wheelchair because they might roll over someone'e toes?

      Not to offend anyone, but I was at some school convention thing and this extremely obese woman was rolling around in her wheelchair and ran over I think either a kids or a womans foot. Take that in. A multi-hundred pound object appliying force to your tiny toes. That would hurt like hell. And just a side note, this was literally like 1st to 3rd grade.

      It occurs to me that the Sensory Support Service & staff at Hambrook Primary School in Bristol are in desperate need of a daily dose of Red Forman's foot, & perhaps that could reset their scrambled brains.
      What's ironic is that if they were rendered without sight they would actually be able to SEE that their actions are that of sadistic child abusers (to put it politely) & do not comply with human rights.
      They are essentially holding Lily-Grace Hooper's life in contempt. This is outright appalling.

    A child needs independence
    Taking a cane from a blind kid is like taking a hearing aid from a deaf kid or taking a wheelchair from a disabled person
    Taking them makes you less independent and for a kid that’s important

    Ridiculous. If there is a health and safety issue, it's not the fault of the blind girl using her cane properly. The school's priority should be in accommodating for her and her cane. The whole point of school is to learn how to function in society, and they are denying her the practice she needs to move independently in a populated area.

      The problem with a guide dog is that it's not a form of independent travel as the dog is still guiding you just like a person would so it's still just as bad for her proper development.
      Also guide dogs require constant training from the user and a child really can't provide that so most guide dog agencies have a minimum age of 16 and require some level of formal training in independent travel techniques.

      Vila Star same cunts will probably ban the dog on the grounds "severe risk to health of others due to potential contaminants on the animal in question, I. e. the canine support apparatus". why don't they just write on their fecking forms "suggested defective child be placed in eradication apparatus, I.e. gas chamber and be exposed to 5ccs of carbon monoxide for period of five minutes. doing so will remove defective offspring and will allow more effective offspring to continue to function at peak conditions" if they think she's that much of a risk..

      Actually they can. Worked in an early childhood centre and service dogs for the child was not allowed because an adult has to be trained for the dog as well and centres and schools refuse to spend money on that training for the staff. The cane is a human rights issue in this case. Take them to the human rights burrow and sue the school on that grounds.

  • @lenir475
    @lenir475 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    What about the health and safety of the girl? This is just forcing her to rely on adults, something that she should not have to do by now, instead of getting more independence. She KNOWS how important her cane is, it's her 'eyes' and here we have them taking it away. Blind people need their canes and she's mature enough not to harm anyone, if some idiot gets tripped up on it, even though it's obvious that she's blind, that is NOT her fault. And then we have them saying how she has to rely on others, 'why don't you get some independence', it's unforgivable!

    This is so messed up in so many ways, I'm not even sure where to start... for one, shame on the school.

    • @Joy6168
      @Joy6168 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      I completely agree that this is so messed up in so many ways. It's amazing how ignorant and uncaring people can be, about disabilities. I can start, 007K: first, the 7 year old needs the cane for her health and safety, so to take it away from her goes against discrimination laws passed, preventing assistance to those with disabilities being illegal. Second, the school isn't an expert on disabilities, that's the special education teacher's job. Third, if the special education teacher suggested taking the cane away to begin with, I will be furious, because people in that career position should know better. Fourth, if it's the general education teacher or principal or superintendent that suggested this discrimination, then shame on them, they have absolutely no right to make that kind of decision. Fifth, by law, the school can't ban a child from their premises because that child has a disability and know that, so instead of explaining to the other kids why the cane is needed and bullying will not be tolerated, they decide to make her life harder, by banning the cane she needs, which is lazy on it's part. Sixth, that seven year old needs to learn independence, just like any other seven year old, whether she has a disability or not, it's only a matter of time that the child will get hurt in some way, shape or form without her cane, which will most likely result in the school claiming innocence, to not feel the repercussions of their actions, which caused this to begin with. Seventh, the best way to get this school to sit up and take notice about the problem they just caused, is by threatening to take away it's money and the best way to do that, is through a lawsuit.

      The kind of parent who believes that their child deserves to be treated equally, to have access to the same educational opportunities as everyone else, regardless of any (non-cognitive) "disabilities".

      @fobija1378 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      paspax No. The answer is idiot.
      Letting child who cant see to place that kids so stupid that you need to think who is blind because they runs around like without head isnt safe nor equally as teacher are more likely to show things on board like math or art rather then talk.
      I had to go to same class where was autistic person (in bad way. In the way you know why word autism is insult) and it wasnt safe nor to that person nor to surrounding because teachers arent special nannies who has diploma about children with disabilities.

      where i live we have a blind school, some kids go there others do 1/2 blind school 1/2 normal school, some do all normal school, usually the blind kids did walk the halls when the other students were walking, we had a crowded school, so the cane was kind of a hazard, if they wanted to use their cane they could go early from class

    You can’t just take a child’s Independence away from them. My little cousin is blindand wasn’t taught properly how to take care of herself until my other cousin took her and started teaching her basic things that a young woman should always know how to do at her age. Now she is in special Olympics at her school because she has the independents that she she need to do stuff like that.

    • @thatlittlekatxd5448
      @thatlittlekatxd5448 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it wasnt even the schools fault. it was her mother. the child was a teenager and didnt know out to take a bath on her own until our older cousin took her and tought her how she can do it on her own rather then needing help with everything. the only thing she gets help for now is walking up and down stairs and making sure she doesnt trip and fall over everything. the child is also really smart and has an amazing memory. you can walk into the roomnd not say anything and she will know you are there before anyone else ever does. she will also know exactly who you are if she's met you before. she is actually amazing.
