  • On this episode of The Mash Up, Vito visits Sidegate Brewery in Concord, CA to talk to owners Paul and Kevin about the journey of opening their brewery. The conversation starts with their decision and inspiration to start Sidegate, then moves into creating a business plan and securing funding before finding their location, then into the construction of the brewery, before discussing their day-to-day life now as brewers and business owners. Of course, we talk about beer and sample a flight at their bar along the way! If you're considering going pro, this is the conversation for you! Enjoy 🍻

    Good points made. I was a homebrewer turned pro. I wanted to start my own brewery back in 2009, but wanted to get some real world industry experience because pro brewing is very different from homebrewing. I’m very glad I got that experience because I would have made a lot of mistakes undoubtedly. I just wish I would have jumped in on starting my own sooner. Just now finally working towards opening my own after too many detours helping others start breweries and it might have been a potentially “good opportunity” for me as well. Spoiler alert: they weren’t. This is an industrial process, a food product and very capital intensive; it’s not to be half-assed. Plus there’s SO much competition now, so you can’t get away with being mediocre at industry, business, customer service, etc.

    Great tips! I actually know a guy who opened a brewery and is doing great after 6+ years. He love it and so do his customers.

    Very good video on the topic of turning pro (specifically opening a brewery). The insights that they shared are priceless. Thanks Vito for getting this out there. I have a lot more appreciation for the owners and their brand.

    Such great information. I hear people that say they want to start a brewery after home brewing for a couple years. To me that just seems like a rushed decision. I am just enjoying making beer at home and with friends.

    Hello, great video! Thanks for sharing your insight. Would you be able to share how long it took from signing the lease until the doors open? I am trying to estimate my own burn rate for cash prior to open.

    Great video! Lots of great information on here.
    Question, when they say they do double batches and ferment 20 barrel instead of 10 barrel, are they actually fermenting two batches together in the same fermentation tank?

    • @vitodelucchi7347
      @vitodelucchi7347 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea, it's pretty common for commercial breweries to have larger fermenters and brew two or more batches to fill them. A lot of commercial systems have a 4th vessel to whirlpool in while your collecting wort from the second batch.

    I’d love to see that business plan and investment brochure. Live in Switzerland do real estate cost similar. Would happily sign an nda if that helps.

    To add onto some of the comments about the financials, I’m curious about when they mention they didn’t secure the SBA loan (aka 2/3 of capital) until they were halfway done with construction. Something doesn’t add up to me there; was the construction being done with a down payment that was covered by the 1/3 angel investment? How did construction commence without 2/3 of your needed capital?

      I logged in to hit you with this bit. You might not get a loan until you have a property.

    So..."I don't have a job at the moment " gets you a government funded loan? Man...I've been doing this all wrong.
