Why isn't this game that popular? This game had better controls than Mario, better graphics, than Mario, better music than Mario, way more interesting characters than Mario, and a real story unlike Mario. It's always either Mario this or Zelda that, the mainstream gamer ignores anything that isn't Mario or Zelda, despite there being many better games such as this one for instance.

This game is not that solid on controls or at least moving around the maps. Those games are enduring because of consistently high quality gameplay design and a gameplay style that is easier to engage the player with. Threads of Fate has combat that is on the lacking side, areas that felt like they should have been more, story that is not ambitious or following a general theme and does not pander to a wide audience. The game is cool conceptually and has top level in aesthetic and music but they could have made it a lot better. Basically, the reason why it was not popular was because Square did not make it their main project and they did not put the effort that a main project would get. Sadly, that kind of pattern would seep even into Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. Square really does not try their hardest and just push for goals blindly. Things might be changing however.

i feel like it had the unfortunate fate of being released about the same time as Final Fantasy IX came out and that game was next level
and Final Fantasy X came soon after that
it was honestly a heavily dated game when it came out

Yeah, they certainly don't make em like they used to huh? Something bout classic role playing games have that nostalgia charm to them.

I love this kind of role-playing game where you can your character freely. I never liked those games where there automatically move on their own when you don't want them to. Same with Tales of the world: Radiant Mythology. Love this game too
