I decided to go with a carryon backpack and a 25L day backpack which I wear on my front when I have both. I went with PackSafe for the peace of mind w/all their security features. It’s more to lug around BUT so far it’s worth the extra space for me bc I hike a lot so having hiking boots plus a pair of running shoes (bc I’m also an avid runner) that I can second as a daily shoe was super important. This also allowed me to put my heaviest items (for me that was my laptop and my toiletry bag) in my personal item bag which they don’t usually weigh. I wear my hiking boots bc they also weigh more and this way I have more space in my carryon. One item I didn’t pack but wish I had is laundry detergent sheets which I thought would be easier to find once I got abroad but so far not so much and I don’t want to buy a big liquid jug or even a big powder jug for obvious reasons so I’m still trying to figure that out. Open to suggestions.
That sounds like a smart and logical setup! I originally left on this longer trip with the idea of one bagging, but I quickly realized that there weren’t many instances where I didn’t prefer separating my laptop into my daypack. So now I do something similar to you (except my daypack could theoretically fit in my carry on if I wanted it to for some reason). We normally just find the smallest bag of laundry detergent powder possible when we arrive. And even if we end up having to buy a bigger one, it’s usually only a couple bucks and we just leave the extra behind (or maybe you could carry a smaller bag to carry a little extra in for emergencies). I guess it also depends on how fast you’re traveling 😇
Sure, for travelling with one-bag only you will have to make some sacrifices. But for me a big reason to follow it is that some airlines have gone crazy mad and you have to pay 30$ extra to be able to carry 2 bags one-way (sometimes called "priority"). 2 ways would be 60$... It may seem like a low price to pay, but 60$ sometimes is the price of another flight, which for me I prefer not to pay if I can avoid it. Cheers.
Thanks Mitch, great video. 👍 Exactly what I've always said, pack only the things you really need. Even in the remote corners of Africa or Asia, I've always found a shop that had the bare essentials for daily needs...
I just tried to find it on Amazon, but for some reason I couldn't find it anymore. I wonder if they got in trouble because their design is so similar to the Roost brand, which is more expensive. Here's the link to their direct website though: bit.ly/48lP8mm (affiliate link)
Good question! I ended up switching the publishing order after recording, so the Never Pay Fees video is actually coming out next week. Feel free to subscribe and hit the bell if you’re interested in getting notified when it goes live! 😇

Love your channel, Mitch. I did a 40 day Euro trip last Fall with my Osprey Waypoint 70L bag (all by train). It was great and not so great. I’ve had it ten years and used it several trips to Europe and SE Asia as well as domestically. The great part is the convenience, the not so great is that I am now 72 and it was not as easy to carry as when I was 62!!! 😂 I’m leaving next week for another month in Europe and taking a 26” Level8 case. I’ll be doing rail travel again and have decided to just slow down and hoping “merrily we ROLL along”. Even though this is a BIG case, I still am being very careful to not overpack. I wish I had a 20-22” roller but I’ve waited too long to change course. 17 Feb 24
I think I have the same Waypoint bag! I loved that bag when I was backpacking around Central and South America - especially since I barely ever took flights back then. I can definitely understand why you decided to test out the roller though - let me know how it goes!

Thanks Mitch, for letting us come along on your trip.

So true! What’s your favorite remote corner that you’ve visited?
Sometimes I think of not to carry any bag just pick the wallet and move ahead😂
That would be a next level adventure!
If I could reliably find clothes in my size at a thrift store, I totally would
Always stay where you can wash and one bag travel is great
Yeah and pack clothes with material that stays “clean” for multiple uses! 😏

Depending on the garment, just letting it air out often does the trick.
I just have my Sherpa’s carry all my steamer trunks for me.
My packable daypack IS my personal item.
Curious about the laptop stand, do you have a link for it please and thank you?

I can’t find the Never Pay Fees video you recommended. Would you mind sharing the link please?

Since I got a smartphone, my laptop has sat in a corner of my bedroom gathering dust. ;)
I travel the world with a light backpack. 😅
Tell us your secrets!

Life would be simpler without a laptop, that’s for sure!
