It also prevents you from doing imaginary girlfriend shit like naming your guitar. Who's going to change a perfectly lovely name like GRX70qa-TKS? (I think Ibanaez uses code for neckshapes too. So it might be bodyshape R with neck shape X)
i was about to reply this same thing.. Yeah Ibanez is super easy to figure out. They do get lengthy when they start doing like transparent quilted tops etc. but it makes sense. The RX is kind of a double meaning it is the RG style body but also the RX 22 fret neck profile. and the 70 is the HSH configuration without a pickguard, if it came w/ a pickguard it would be a 50.
I bought one of those like 20 years ago. Since then, I owned almost 100 other guitars (and I mean a hundred literally) but all came, were used in gigs or recording sessions, and went. This Gio remained. Well, heavily modified…but yet the best guitar I ever played. And keeps getting better.
Bought one like 3 years ago... and I keep coming back to it, even after buying some more expensive models, love the feel of the neck and plays really well
I picked one up in 2018 and left it stock. It's very reliable! There's nothing wrong with the GIO series at all. They need to be set-up and maintained like every other guitar.
@@noahgoodman1237 I barely use one. But, I know enough that if it puts the strings out of tune, one (or both) of 2 things is happening: - the strings are catching in the nut - the strings still have slack in them which needs to be stretched out. Lots of people blame tremolo/whammy problems on a 'bad guitar'. It's just the nut or the strings themselves.
@@noahgoodman1237 It's a great guitar. But, whatever you do, study how to do a basic set-up on an electric guitar. A lot of beginning guitarists never learn it - or they don't learn it until it's a long time down the road. A good set-up (string height, neck relief, intonation, stretching the strings, pickup height) can make even a budget guitar perform like one which is much, much, more expensive. Also, get yourself a sanding sponge from a hardware store. Since it's Winter, the dryness causes even expensive guitars to have 'fret sprout' (sharp fret ends on either side of the neck which can scratch/cut your fingers if they're not sanded down). There are videos onTH-cam on how to do basic guitar set-ups and how to use a sanding sponge to get rid of fret-sprout. Watch them and learn how to do them. I wanted to say thank you Elmo, because I truly trust your honesty and opinion and I bought this guitar. It’s absolutely worth every penny. You helped me pick the right guitar for my money! I wish you much success with your channel. And by the way, I had no fret sprout, but I will have to polish my frets, they are scratchy af, lol.
So I got one of these as my first Ibanez- being an LP fanatic, owner, player for nearly 50 years. It was well packed. The strings were even wrapped in anticorrosive paper. The fret ends were super sharp so I filed them and treated the dry fret board with lemon oil. Put Wilkinson locking tuners on it and hybrid slinkys. Other than the fret ends there were no high frets and I just gave them a polish. Tuned it up and the intonation and factory set up were perfect. I'm not a big tremolo guy but this one is no junk budget trem- nice and solid and works great. No tuning issues with it. One thing about the fret sprout- the humidity in my house here was around 35% so that didn't help. I'm very happy with the looks playability and sound from this and consider it a bargain at it's price.
Amazing video as always, on top of what you said about fret sprout, it is also indicative of the quality of wood they are using in the factory. If you use properly dried wood, even for weather conditions in the south east of Asia, the wood will not shrink so dramatically to cause noticeable sharp fret ends. Beginners who buy this better have a kind and helpful teacher to assist them in solving the issue!
This guy got a lemon. Confirmed by hundreds of positive reviews, forums and comments from others who own this. This is a budget guitar but he expects top shelf. His playing is subpar but still manages to make it sound good thru his amp, despite all the nonsense he spews.
I have the Ibanez GIO GRX20Z Black Knight with 2 humbuckers. It had no fret sprout and no dead spots. Plays great. I hated the pickups and the awful 5-way switch. OMG! i hated that 5-way switch. I upgraded it with low output alnico 2 humbuckers, full size pots and a 3-way switch. This is a fun, fun guitar now.
Just watched this video and it answers my question about this guitar and it's value. Been looking at it for a bit now for a project guitar and if Elmo gives it a thumbs then it's worth the money.
I totally agree about the fret sprout. It should NEVER EVER HAPPEN. PERIOD. As you stated, most people buying this guitar are beginners and they more than likely won't want to fix it and probably won't know how, so that would be an extra expense at a tech. The wood doesn't matter except to hold the controls. Of course the controls matter too and pickups matter big time to me. Good review as always from you kind sir . Hope all is well there...🤘
The TKS at the end indicates the color scheme. Black and grey. The GRX70qa is also available in black/blue and black/orange. How did you like the volume difference between the settings? I had to adjust the hight of the pickups to level things out a bit, to avoid sudden volume drops.
Ok so I own this guitar, Well the blue version. know it’s budget guitar but generally works for me. I also needed a bit of set up from out of the box but now happy with the playability. My only disappointment is the sound of the neck pick up….. that was until I heard you playing Vai at 10:20 and OMG sounded just as good as a GEM. And can I just say you can really play. If you had a budget of 300 Dollars, which one would you choose? Yamaha Pacifica 112V or this Ibanez? Is there a HUGE difference? Somehow TKS means "Transparent Black Sunburst". "Black" in computer printers is "K" so perhaps the flame is a computer printout rather than actual wood. Or maybe 3D printed wood, since that is a thing now.

Bought this for my 9 year old son, who got influenced by me, to listening to rock and metal. Didn't get any fret sprout on this particular one. It is a well made guitar at this price point. Change the stock tuner to some of my spare gotoh locking tuner and it is good to go. Only complaint i have is the ceramic single pick up but hey at this price point, what can i say 😆. This is value for money

hello I'm a beginner guitarist who also plays acoustics, and I got this guitar for Christmas: my favorite as an aspect among the cheap ones, and the strings I played well enough for what little I still know. I especially like rock and metal (Nirvana, Queen, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Jimi Hendrix, but also Elvis, etc.) but also other genres such as blues, and surf rock. As an amplifier I chose the Fender Mustang LT25. Would you have something to suggest to me? Did I choose well? Thanks for the attention
I figured that this version of the guitar that you got, doesn't have a "Ibanez" Carved on the bridge :/ while Indonesia versions do, i hope there's no other differences
Gio ibanez is very good made guitar. It can be upgraded as any other. The tone is standard tone for electric guitar, its good enough to play in any level of use and performance. If you have money to buy an gibson or fender guitar dont think that they dont have some standard issues just like that grx. They are all products of massive production and they are all asembled by human hands, in one part of the world workers are payed higher on the other are very low payed... And offcourse that if you are older brand and if you had invented something your products have total right to cost more. When we see harley benton guitars we see what is industry capeable to do. Cheers
the gio grx70 is going for £199 on amazon, £209 on guitar guitar the store, £204 on Tomann. its priced differently at several stores but amazon is the cheapest
The only thing that I dislike about those particular guitars are the use of string trees. Other than that, they are really nice looking axes for the money.
yes tht's a pity for tuning issues but with roller string trees and some graphite powder in nut slots it stays in tune fairly well even if mine (older model but always grx70) has the horrible trapezoid tuners, next upgrade for sure. the rest of the guitar is ok by itself.
Come on Elmo, Try a AZ in a Guitar Shop, if you haven't Already. I think you'll be Hooked. Also the Nick Johnston Schecter is another Awesome S Type Guitar.
What would be the best choice between Ibanez GRX70QA, Ibanez GSA60, Ibanez GRG170DX and Squier Sonic HSS in terms of quality, sound and playability for pop / rock mostly?
My gio looks sick im no beginner tho when you see a ibenez for a 100 on craigslist you have to buy it em i right. But no it feels plays and sounds amazing its black and the neck has white on both sides and the frets are sick. Just because you buy a guitar cheep doesn't mean its crap Ibanez specializes in making guitars for metal so you know they can take a hit. And the gio is no different i love playing my gio. Im not ashamed of saying it the thing shredz. Only thing iv broken on it was the strings and that was just from shredding to hard.
So what’s the best guitar in this price range, with a useable whammy bar, in your opinion. Or maybe even up to 500 dollars. By the way the shredding was fun 😅
Does it have to Ibanez ? If not, you could look at some LTD alternatives. I've had good experiences with those. Also, Yamaha Pacifica's are good. Just some thoughts.

Suomen talvi kuivattaa puut kaulassa ja halkaisee akustisen kannet. Varsinkin kerrostaloissa ja jos kosteusprosentti alle20%. Kitarat valmistetaan ulkomailla trooppisissa kosteus olosuhteissa. Tuollainen kosteusero on myrkkyä kitaroille. Pitää vaan soittaa pirusti ja hikoilla kaula märäksi ja käydä myös suihkussa ja jättää kitara sitten kostumaan sinne hehe.
@@mesemasa Siitä on jo paljon testejä.

@@MrPolevaulter you are doing a great service with this channel appreciate you. just checked the vid really digging the PRS style Harley Benton would that work for metal or something like the tone in Alter Bridge's song Isolation? Also, do you have a mid range priced guitar list?
About the fretboard problem you've mentioned. At this price range, the build quality is awe-inspiring, stop complaining, you're just spending 200 bucks. what else do you want? A Fender custom shop? Gibson Les Paul? Stop daydreaming.
all sub 800 guitars get sperzel locking tuners or grover. thats how they save money, crap tuners, pots and pickups. its wood for modding at that price.

the gio grx70 is going for £199 on amazon, £209 on guitar guitar the store, £204 on Tomann. its priced differently at several stores but amazon is the cheapest
I bought one awhile back and had no fret sprout.
Well, every guitar that you put into Plexy, play and sound great! 🙂
such versatility, i likey very much
You are awesome guitarist !!!
Thank you :)
Terrible reviewer tho.
Great video and very informative! Another good and affordable Ibanez i personally own is the S6. A video on it would awesome too!
Maybe at some point. So much gear, so little time...
@@MrPolevaulter The more gear the better! Modern guitarists like you never have enough time. 🤣
hey if this isnt the best guitar in this price range, what is the best electric guitar under $250 ?
I seen in go for £199 on amazon uk
Which guitar is better Harley Benton sc 550 or Ibanez grg70? Thank you.
Probably the Benton.
@@MrPolevaulter Thank you :-)
If you had to pick between the GRX70QA and the SA260FM, which would you choose?
The only thing that I dislike about those particular guitars are the use of string trees. Other than that, they are really nice looking axes for the money.
yes tht's a pity for tuning issues but with roller string trees and some graphite powder in nut slots it stays in tune fairly well even if mine (older model but always grx70) has the horrible trapezoid tuners, next upgrade for sure. the rest of the guitar is ok by itself.
Come on Elmo,
Try a AZ in a Guitar Shop, if you haven't Already.
I think you'll be Hooked.
Also the Nick Johnston Schecter is another Awesome S Type Guitar.
Que bien tocas Bro⚡
gracias por la rebiew
What would be the best choice between Ibanez GRX70QA, Ibanez GSA60, Ibanez GRG170DX and Squier Sonic HSS in terms of quality, sound and playability for pop / rock mostly?
Dunno. Try before you buy.
How's the neck in compare to the schecter c6
Can't remember. Sorry.
I’m thinking of getting this as my first, is it good, and if not any other recommendations
Hai Elmo, love your review here..
Which one do you reccomend, this one or pacifica 112v?
Out of those, probably the Pacifica.
Could you tell me which is the best guitar you have tried in this price range? Thank you
Jet JS-400
Is the tremolo a Floyd Rose type?
No
Decent, would definitely replace the pups and tuners
My gio looks sick im no beginner tho when you see a ibenez for a 100 on craigslist you have to buy it em i right. But no it feels plays and sounds amazing its black and the neck has white on both sides and the frets are sick. Just because you buy a guitar cheep doesn't mean its crap Ibanez specializes in making guitars for metal so you know they can take a hit. And the gio is no different i love playing my gio. Im not ashamed of saying it the thing shredz. Only thing iv broken on it was the strings and that was just from shredding to hard.
How would you compare this to the Jackson Js 22 or Js 32?
Not sure. I forget the model of the Jackson I tried, and I don't really remember what it was like.
the thing i dont like about ibanez is the place they put volume and toggle switch i play with my pinkie anchored and its annoying
So what’s the best guitar in this price range, with a useable whammy bar, in your opinion. Or maybe even up to 500 dollars. By the way the shredding was fun 😅
There are a whole bunch. Out of Strats I'd say the Eart Strat, Jet JS-300, Cort G260 or Sire S3.
@@MrPolevaulter Shucks, thanks, these are mostly new to me. Will check them out.
Hey there, nice review as always, but was it made in china? i want to know that are these Chinese guitars ok?
(I watched the vid once more and yes it is, MADE IN CHINA)
what is better choice beetwen this one or cort x100
Grx70qa vs GRG170dx what do you think is better
Don't know. Haven't tried the other one.
Is this better than the grx40 u reviewed? 🤣 im looking forward to buy an ibanez azes31 but also searching for other alternatives
Does it have to Ibanez ? If not, you could look at some LTD alternatives. I've had good experiences with those.
Also, Yamaha Pacifica's are good. Just some thoughts.
@@raytorvalds3699 in mu country the choices are limited it's either the famous brands or brands of china and Indonesia, what's other than ltd? I would love hear other recommendations
@@jordanjerrardjoy2308 You could also look at (non-trem) Jacksons or maybe a Squier. It really depends what price point and specs you're after.
Not a big difference really. The GRX40 that I had didn't get any fret issues, and was cheaper.
Does the Ibanez Gio have the same neck pocket dimensions as a strat?
Don't know.
i'll maybe buy it next year im on a debate where what i should buy a les paul or a superstrat
This one or Jackson JS12?
Dunno
you mentioned at the end that this guitar is not the best you have tried in this price range. so I am wondering what guitar would you say is the best in this price range?
There you have a few options: th-cam.com/video/dM9zKKiZoxc/w-d-xo.html
as with all sub 400 dollar guitars.. throw sperzel locking tuners on them -problem solved. cool guitar.
Suomen talvi kuivattaa puut kaulassa ja halkaisee akustisen kannet. Varsinkin kerrostaloissa ja jos kosteusprosentti alle20%.
Kitarat valmistetaan ulkomailla trooppisissa kosteus olosuhteissa.
Tuollainen kosteusero on myrkkyä kitaroille.
Pitää vaan soittaa pirusti ja hikoilla kaula märäksi ja käydä myös suihkussa ja jättää kitara sitten kostumaan sinne hehe.
Paahdettu kaula auttaa asiaan. Halpojen kitaroiden aatelia olisi Jet guitar js-300. Ehkä Elmo joskus testaa
@@mesemasa Siitä on jo paljon testejä.
You mentioned that you've played better guitars at this price range? Can you point me in the right direction? Ideally a guitar with a tremolo bridge as well, like this one
How often does it go out of tune?
Can't remember.
I'd like you to try the new Harley Benton TE62. Best budget guitar out there with kewl colors! :)
You said this isn't the best in this price range, but, then wich guitar is?
th-cam.com/video/dM9zKKiZoxc/w-d-xo.html
Is there any better guitar at this price point ??? Someone olz suggest me
Hi Elmo! What is the best guitar at that price range?
th-cam.com/video/dM9zKKiZoxc/w-d-xo.html
Killer guitars for the money! 👍
I want to change a peavey telecaster with a ibanez gio grx70hskidkejdbjwb what do you think?
Ha,I said,ha'aaaa
Haven't tried a Peavey tele.
What's better this or grg 121?
I've reviewed that as well: th-cam.com/video/M4g9p2T4y6g/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1Q_qC5OZl13v8LtI
@@MrPolevaulter in your opinion, what would you choose?
so what are the best guitars in this price range?
I have suggestions in two separate "8 Great Cheap Guitars" videos. You can look up those.
@@MrPolevaulter you are doing a great service with this channel appreciate you. just checked the vid really digging the PRS style Harley Benton would that work for metal or something like the tone in Alter Bridge's song Isolation? Also, do you have a mid range priced guitar list?
@@evadesc It probably would. No I don't have a list like that, sorry.
Oh man! Do you teach those techniques?
I just wish they would change the Americas got talent looking font for Ibanez
I have gibson sg andr strat mim and this one is my favourite ))
What exact color is it?
Can't remember.
About the fretboard problem you've mentioned. At this price range, the build quality is awe-inspiring, stop complaining, you're just spending 200 bucks. what else do you want? A Fender custom shop? Gibson Les Paul? Stop daydreaming.
I've had cheaper guitars with no problems.
@@MrPolevaulter what’s the brand? I’d like to try.
all sub 800 guitars get sperzel locking tuners or grover. thats how they save money, crap tuners, pots and pickups. its wood for modding at that price.
You Must Try Sqoe St600
I mean Sqoe sest600
Yeah I have a black one. Plays great but no need for the whammy bar. If you even look at it, it goes waaay outta tune!!!
Yeah, I've had that on a couple of guitars.
This is my daughter's first electric guitar. She chicken picks it.
Cool bananas :)
