  • Unboxing and a full, detailed look at the Sangean ATS-909X shortwave radio receiver. I look at the functionality in detail and give my first impressions as a beginner to shortwave reception.
    Get the ATS-909X SW Radio - amzn.to/2VT4h9l
    Get the DAR-101 Recorder - amzn.to/2W5eUe8
    I'm not new to radio, but I am most definitely a beginner in shortwave reception and its quirks and oddities. Apologies in advance for any mistakes I make.
    Since getting rid of most of my hi-fi separates over 10 years ago, I've always missed having a tuner or radio of any kind. Although there are fewer stations than ever on non-digital bands such as FM and SW, I'm still curious to know what's out there. I decided to buy a portable radio to do just that and thought I would try out something capable of receiving all the shortwave bands too. The feeling I get when receiving a distant broadcast over the air is the same as it was when I was young.
    I've ended up with the Sangean ATS-909X. Not a perfect radio by many accounts but probably more than satisfactory for my needs.
    Have you used this radio? Let me know what you think of it in the comments or if you have any better suggestions for receivers that will outperform the Sangean (Grundig, Sony?).
    Thanks for watching. #shortwave #radio #sangean

    Some 13 years ago, I bought 4 radios:
    One of them was the Sangean ATS-909.
    An excellent radio.
    I live in “Hurricane alley “, in Florida. So having a radio with SSB is definitely nice. It’s still working as new.
    There are 2 companies that really have very high quality. C.Crane, and Sangean. ( and Sangean actually makes some radios for C.Crane).
    I’m not able to get this new version but, ......
    One day.
    All reviewers give a lot of praise on these radios.
    📻🙂

    An update to my earlier post. I strung up the included external wire antenna wire antenna in front of my office window and was pleased to see that I was able to tune in the night time active ham bands, 40 and 20 meters.

    I’m basically a beginner with DX listening but I have a few good radios and some HAM radios that I use. I’m in my mid 50’s and what I enjoy is some of the last examples of “stand alone” technology where the internet or any subscription is required to use it. In the past couple years I’ve been buying up various quality made shortwave radios since they’re slowly falling away from popularity and I know it won’t be long when we won’t be able to find good ones. I recently bought an ATS-909X2 and love it, just make sure you get one with version 73 firmware installed, it has the least amount of hiccups in this design. And often many listeners fail to consider using their radio in a low RF noise environment so they get frustrated when certain bandwidths have interference when you can clearly hear what type of RF noise is going on, turn off as many electrical appliances/devises as possible, even your wi-fi internet creates issues in some ways. There’s countless 5G cell towers around our homes today and that system pumps out a LOT of wattage that will affect things, the new 5G isn’t like the older cell systems.

    That tuning mechanism smooths out with usage I'm on my 2nd 909X & they both became looser after a month or so but admittedly I use them a lot because I'm retired, LOL. There are mods available on TH-cam that show how to disable the tuner detent feature. I like to have some detent, though but it's really too stiff for the first few weeks.

    • @ambush1sg
      @ambush1sg 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since the last post I bought another 909x & the detent is almost gone. It's completely gone on my older one. My older one was received on 2 Oct 19 & the new one on 6 Jan 20. I wouldn't stay away from this radio because of the very stiff tuning. So far that's the ONLY thing I had against them & it went away. Then there's always the up & down tuning buttons plus the scan feature. As far as the insensitivity when using the telescoping antenna it doesn't bother me at all because I use 2 outdoor wire antennas & 2 indoor ones going up to the 2nd floor through antenna switches but even for casual SW listening I can still pull many stations out with the telescoping one just not as good. The wire antenna on a reel works great.

    _The Sangean ATS-909X has no sync and no sensitivity to AM and LW band. Makes a lot of noise on the AM if the signal is weak. There are drawbacks. It worked nicely._

    I have one of these radios. I agree the tuning wheel/knob/ thingy was a huge disappointment. The ability to tune in ham bands so far has been disappointing as well. So I'm going to see if the ham bands come in any better using the included long wire antenna. From what I have read on the internet it is supposed to help and I guess that would make sense. Part of my problem may be that I live in a concrete block home and I have a screened in pool enclosure here in Florida. Great review! You can try tuning the ham bands on 28.300-29.700, 24.930-24.990, 21.200-21.450, 18.110-18.168, 14.150-14.350, 7.125-7.300, 3.600-4.000, and 1.800-2.000. Thanks and 73's de K3ENV.

    I have the Sangean ATS 909X2 and the only thing is that the Sangean radio locks up and you need to use the reset button. My Sangean ATS 909x2 has the firmware 078 but the older firmwares lock up more often and i have even saw a video where the Sangean does not react to any button switches including the reset!!

    Great overview of this radio. I have to disagree on the ATS and SW observations. A lot of people do like this scan functionality on SW. Not to permanently store stations because as you say these stations come and go and frequencies are constantly changing. But if you don't have the time to sit down and scan between say 3-30Mhz on SW (which can take ages but is fun if you're in the mood) you can hit scan, sit back, and within five minutes you can go through all the stations found. Then do the same again later in the day for example when conditions have changed. Or if you do find something on the scan you can save it to another page if you like. Tecsun have taken this a stage further and on many of their radios they have ATS and ETM (Easy Tuning Mode). The idea being you keep ATS for more permanent storage and ETM when you want to find what's on now. Also useful when you're away from home and don't want overwrite and local frequencies.

      I would like the slow and methodical tuning through the band but it genuinely becomes painful on the Sangean. I retract what I said :-) It definitely needs ATS to save RSI!

    • @Radio_Activity
      @Radio_Activity 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tdcattech Haha. Yes in your case you definitely need the ATS! Could be worth looking at the wheel mod. Supposedly makes it much smoother. Lovely looking radio though. Take a look at Oxford Shortwave on YT. He posted some nice stuff the other day using the 909x.

      Thanks. I checked out the vids on Oxford Shortwave. Good stuff. The Sangean needs tuning control like the Tecsun S-8800. Very nice.

      @@tdcattech You're right. A raised tuning knob with thumb indent like the on the S-8800 would suit the 909x perfectly.

    Have you tried to compare this radio with the Sangean 909x mod version sold by RadioLabs? They claim to have made various improvements. But I find that the modified version is actually less sensitive. What is your experience?

    _RADIO LABS Sangean 909x is a modified Sangean 909x and much much better in reception on AM and SW band. It also has a higher quality speaker. "Hi-fi" Search on Google "Radio LABS Clear mod Sangean ATS 909X"_

    • @377559
      @377559 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I own both the modified and unmodified Sangean 909x and find that the opposite is true! The modified radio is marginally LESS sensitive in terms of identifying broadcasts on shortwave. I thought that maybe I had received a damaged version. But when I contacted them for an explanation the response was very poor. I also found no difference in the quality of the speaker when using FM.

    I have about 20 sw recievers, I find the 909x one of the worse and use it the least. I wish there was a way of scanning the entire SW (1.711 to 29.999) in stand of just individual meter bands, Even my old dx 440 is easier to use.
