My nan lived in London as a small girl during WWII. She told me about how her street got bombed, and that she could hear the bombs exploding, one by one, getting closer and closer to her house until a bomb crashed through her roof, and landed in a large barrel of water in the basement. Her neighbourhood was destroyed, but thankfully the bomb that hit her house was a dud. She then had to live in a shelter, and her room had an AA gun on the roof above it, going off at all hours. She was always a bit jittery and that explains it I think. She also told me about hearing the V-1 missiles which she referred to as the "doodlebugs". She mentioned how no one worried too much until you heard the engine cut out because that was when it was about to hit something. My grandfather was also a young lad in England in that time, and apparently they once had a German bomber crash land in a field near their house, which he and his twin brother went into and explored while the thing was still burning lol. My grandfather grew up to join the British Army with his twin brother. He was initially in explosive ordnance disposal, then moved to the paras. And his twin brother was a tanker.
Well, they weren’t really dead though. They were reserves that were far enough back the gas hadn’t really got most of them. And gas never stops everybody because some will always be fast enough to get gas masks or filters on.
I am currently on vacation in Saint-Nazaire, and I learned that the whole city was razed by the allied, but the submarine base is still standing still to this day. Truly a shame

This song just gives me the chills every time! All I can think about is the moments of terror the poor dresden people were going through between the air raid sirens, fires blazing, the sounds of AA and Flak fire, I am glad anyone even survived this because from the way it sounds like in the song, nobody lived. In reality they killed over 40k civillians in the bomb runs. Which equates to just a little under 3% of dresden at the time. Honestly even with all the stuff germany was doing at the time, the Civillians didnt desserve to burn. Great song tho 10/10.

Something I like about this song is that it captures how _personal_ Dresden was for the English bomber crews. While the song at large can apply to the entire campaign, Dresden stands out as it was basically revenge for Coventry, a city high command had to sacrifice in order to maintain the Intel advantage of having cracked enigma.
It was also because the Soviets requested it. Dresden was Germany’s next line of defense and was meant to stall for time against the Soviets. So the Soviets asked their western allies to delete it. Ironic because the Germans truly believed the British wouldn’t bomb it.
Man I love this band I learn more about history and I love songs so I'm learning more about the legands in war and enjoying music at the same time I'll become a member of this fantastic band and pay for this masterpieces that are made by you all and I'll not even regret doing it

Feels like one of their songs where there's more emphasis on the event rather than the song as an art form. I remember watching a documenatary of allied carpet bombing raids in Modern History. The destruction was enough to scare anyone. Sometimes though, it's not just an explosion and a city that crumbles. One of the sites was a German city famous for housing historically significant art pieces. The bombs caused firestorms which accelerated everything down to ash. A fire tornado pulling less dense air up and cold air would rush in swirling from the sides. Perpetual flame. Firestorm.

Feels like one of their songs where there's more emphasis on the event rather than the song as an art form. I remember watching a documenatary of allied carpet bombing raids in Modern History. The destruction was enough to scare anyone. Sometimes though, it's not just an explosion and a city that crumbles. One of the sites was a German city famous for housing historically significant art pieces. The bombs caused firestorms which accelerated everything down to ash. A fire tornado pulling less dense air up and cold air would rush in swirling from the sides. Perpetual flame. Firestorm.
