I am Lake Charles native born. You did mention the great weather. Few people know, we have the most beautiful weather in the entire nation - eight days out of the year. I’m from Lake Charles -I moved after Laura - was also there during Rita - I sold my house and came north away from the coastline. All my relatives on my mom’s side still live there in Margaret Place.

While you were driving by the Civic Center, I was inside performing in the local 61 year old traditional performance of The Nutcracker. LC is one of only 5 cities in the country with lifetime license to present this production. Prior to Hurricane Laura in 2020, LC was one of the fastest growing cities in the US. The antebellum style house that you passed on Cleveland Street belongs to close friends of mine. It was dilapidated, and they restored it to accurate original condition. There are many homes like this in the area. I'm glad you had a nice visit. Y'all come back, ya hear!!!!

Lake Charles native, appreciate your visit and your kind words, a lot of the comments from other locals are very accurate, you visited probably the cleanest most typical city looking part of town and you headed south of downtown to Lake Shore drive where there are the largest estates in the city where all the "Old Money'' people live. Literally just east or north of downtown is very rough neighborhoods and yes that apartment complex was mainly because the entire area was destroyed from the 2020 hurricanes. Luna's has good food. Surprisingly, the tourist trap Steamboat Bills has great food, you should go there next time. Please come again, and visit more areas.
Trucks having to stay in the outside lanes on the bridge have nothing to do with it's structural integrity but how steep it is. Trucks lose speed climbing the bridge and doing so in both lanes quickly causes traffic backups.
I know that's the case most of the time. However, the article I read about the poor condition of the bridge said, specifically, that trucks have to stay to the side of this particular bridge because of its poor condition. The bridge is strongest at it's edges.
Did you notice the crossed flintlock derringer pistols adorning the bridge? When I was a kid living in Lafayette, we would cross the bridge on our way to Astroworld in Houston, and I thought they were the coolest thing. When they demolish the bridge I hope they manage to save some of them or sell them.

I like in lake charles! here's some stuff I think people should know. 1. There are plenty of homeless people, especially downtown. They just don't have camps anywhere in visibility of the average person. 2. He went through the very very nice parts of town, which there are plenty of, but there are many really bad parts of town farther away from downtown. 3. The weather isn't particularly good here, you just came on a nice day. It rains a lot here and it's so humid during the summer it's unbearable. 4. There aren't many things to do here. Plenty of restaurants and stores but it's severely lacking in the fun category. Our mall is very much brimming and alive thanks to that fact though, so it's kind of "the spot" in town. We have the mall, 2 cinemark theatres, 2 escape rooms, and the (frankly gorgeous) casinos. When you actually live here it gets boring fast unless you love gambling 5. Along with violent crime here being 2 times the national average, the theft is also higher than the national average. It's not a safe city. 6. We're right next to texas (about a 30 minute drive) and 2 hours from Houston, so you have to really be careful on the roads. If there is one thing texas and ESPECIALLY houston is known for it's HORRIBLE drivers. Keep an eye out for idiots! 7. If you want to move to a city in louisiana, move to Lafayette. It has soo much more beautiful architecture, so many fun things to do, and you're solidly in cajun culture without the crime of new orleans. Lake Charles is really tainted by texas culture, so you don't really get the full coolness of living in a cajun area.

Lake Charles was devastated by 2 hurricanes almost back to back , Laura and Delta, in 2020. The reason for the new housing is because so much was destroyed in the hurricanes in September and August 2020. Lake Charles is a wonderful place to live. Lots of economic opportunities, medical facilities, educational institutions.
I’ve lived in Lake Charles all my life and I think what we lack in amenities i think we make up for in food and culture. As far as the bridge, funding just got approved to replace it, so hopefully construction starts soon. I would say the biggest negative are the potential hurricanes. If you haven’t tried it yet go try Steamboat Bills restaurant! Enjoy your stay!
Lake Charles native here, just wanted to drop in and say that is the best that lake water has ever looked🤣 typically pretty brown water considering all the chemical plants we have across the lake from that downtown area and the significant pollution they cause. Also last I read that bridge (we just call it the I-10 bridge) has been rated something like the 4th most dangerous major bridge in the country
I know I have crossed that dangerous bridge a number of times on my way from New Jersey to Tucson Arizona I think I stopped a couple of times at Cajun Charlie's to eat a Cajun Meal which was really outstanding it may not have been in Lake Charles it might have been in Sulphur

Not everyone knows that the Louisiana culture is a combination of French, Italian, Spanish, and Creole cultures. The Italian influence often get overlooked. As a child, our family drove from Houston to Birmingham every year to visit extended family. On the way, we always stopped in New Orleans to visit my dad's sisters. One had married a Frenchman, the other had married an Italian. So we got the taste of both cultures. My uncle Slim Vidon owned a seafood stand on the French Quarter. I can't remember what my Uncle Joe Giardina did for a living. They all lived in Metairie.

I lived there and there was a part of town called Goosport and they pronounce it “goss”. There was a restaurant run by Goos fami,y and I think that was the name.
There use to be these old refinery barracks near the bridge that were converted into a motel called the Chateau Charles. It was a unique place, use to joke it was the place where they filmed Hogan’s Heroes. 😅
I'm from New Orleans and I've only heard courthouse in Louisiana. That's the case even when other parish administrative offices are housed in the building in addition to courts at least in my experience and I've been in many courthouses around the state for business reasons not normally as a defendant in court.
Many years ago, I lived near Beaumont, Texas. This is 55 miles west of Lake Charles. The weather may be great in November, but the humidity in this area is horrible in the summer.
It is significant that the 6-inch gun standing on a pedestal near the courthouse is aiming at the city hall, and not the other way around. Even though the military museum is located in the city hall.

It also houses a number of parish government offices, but the majority of them are at a separate location called the Parish Administrative Complex.
Wow a special edition Thanksgiving video. Lake Charles does look like a nice place to live. I have had some friends live there and they did enjoy it. You get to deal with hurricanes and flood insurance but anywhere along the Gulf has that problem. The food looked good. The Christmas village is traditional. My wife has a mini version for our home. It sounds like Nicole will get one once you finish traveling. Overall another good video. Thanks for the surprise.

My mother was born in a small town near there called Iota, about 40 miles ENE of Lake Charles. She didn't stay there long, when she was 18 she moved to an older sister in Kline Texas where she met my father in 1948. In 1950 they moved to guess where? California where I was born in 1952. My father in law was from Lake Charles, lived in California until 2006 and then moved back to Lake Charles where he passed in 2014.
Thanks for sharing enjoy your outlook on city’s. I am 75 lived here all my life. To me the town is worst off now than when I grew up. We had 4 downtown theaters, 3 drive in. A YMCA fishing dock and boat house. Population has stayed near same for many years. Downtown business were thriving, now we have a Mall that is failing by the day. The for site and people in power have no vision of the future. Check the name brand restaurant and eateries we will be at the bottom. Thanks for letting me blow off some steam.
What a Thanksgiving treat to wake up to a "Joe & Nic's Road Trip" video! Lake Charles is a very pretty town. The lake views are captivating. I wish you both a Happy Thanksgiving and hope that you are having the chance to celebrate in whatever way suits you.
I call it a court house. It is the parish seat of the parish. Lake Charles has been growing for some time now. The water area is FULL of children during the peak summer times for sure. I used to swim and hang out at the beach, but I think they have since stopped swimming. Down town used to be a beautiful area and always busy. I think they are trying to bring it back from being somewhat deserted. Nonetheless, Lake Charles is a beautiful place to live and enjoy the laid back life compared to Lafayette.
I spent a lot of time in Lake Charles back around 1980. Didn’t live there but had many customers and friends in the area. Always enjoyed visiting there. Last time I was there was around 2020 or 2021 and the city had gone through a hurricane and hadn’t recovered from the damage. Hope all is well there these days.
We love taking trips to Lake Charles from Houston. The food is seriously excellent. They have some good shopping and dining options downtown and even more all over the Southern parts of town. The hoods are along I-10 to the East and North of downtown. There are a few bad spots in the South side, but it is mostly safe there. Lake Charles is getting back to life after the 2020 hurricanes. A lot of buildings have been demolished including the tallest downtown office tower. Many more buildings are scheduled for demolition all across the city. The downtown park has a huge playground as you showed. The lakefront has a lot of things to do. There is a sand beach, live alligator pond, new museum, Veterans Memorial area with tanks, a WTC park with 2 beams from the actual WTC in New York. The city is reconstructing the old pathways to connect the Beach to the end of Downtown. Downtown has a nice quaint business district with some good local coffee shops, restaurants, antique stores, a vintage music shop, art, and some live music venues. You also can't forget the upscale casinos impact on the area. The South side of town has really grown up since the luxury casinos began opening in 2005.
The old bridge has dueling pistols marking the railings that are a tribute to Jean Lafitte. I'm sure you didn't slow down to look at those, did you Joe?

Hello guys. That bridge is called the I-10 bridge and the other bridge on 210 loop is called I-210 bridge. There are two bridges that you have to cross on Highway 171 to get to Moss Bluff which is two miles north of Lake Charles and of those two bridges, the 1st one you cross when leaving LC is the Bayou River Bridge and the 2nd one you cross is the Calcasieu River Bridge. Lake Charles is also surrounded by two major rivers, the Calcasieu River and the Sabine River. That lake you’re talking about is Charles Lake and that river dumps into Calcasieu Lake which is just a few miles around the bend. And the gentleman that is pronounced Goos like Josh but in his name you hear the jossh like goosss damnit

Captain Goos, pronounced Goss, was my great great great great grandfather. Our family is very proud of the statue. The bridge should have been closed years ago. Courthouse I left Lake Charles 15 years ago to take care of my parents. I don't miss it at all.
@@valenfitzen I believe it was known as “Goss’s” but that might have been the people I worked with. We ordered lunch from there. This was in early 1970s. I worked at the old First Federal by the post office. I loved my job….I was the runner and they had a car I used. I loved being out and abt. I went to the Courthouse almost every day but never to City Hall.
Don’t know if it’s been mentioned - a courthouse will always be called a courthouse because it is where (judicial) court is held. Different from a parish seat. Obviously called a parish seat because it is a parish and not a county. Just like a county seat can be where the courthouse is, but the courthouse will always be a courthouse. Two different things.

Happy Thanksgiving Joe and Nic. Lake Charles looks beautiful and the weather is nice, I got a feeling the weather is a little tough in July and August though. Beautiful place!
Right, I would guess it gets really hot there.
Can get in the high 90’s that time of year with near 100% humidity; so can get quite miserable but this time of year can have some very nice weather
My mother was born in a small town near there called Iota, about 40 miles ENE of Lake Charles. She didn't stay there long, when she was 18 she moved to an older sister in Kline Texas where she met my father in 1948. In 1950 they moved to guess where? California where I was born in 1952. My father in law was from Lake Charles, lived in California until 2006 and then moved back to Lake Charles where he passed in 2014.

Thanks for sharing enjoy your outlook on city’s. I am 75 lived here all my life. To me the town is worst off now than when I grew up. We had 4 downtown theaters, 3 drive in. A YMCA fishing dock and boat house. Population has stayed near same for many years. Downtown business were thriving, now we have a Mall that is failing by the day. The for site and people in power have no vision of the future. Check the name brand restaurant and eateries we will be at the bottom. Thanks for letting me blow off some steam.

I call it a court house. It is the parish seat of the parish. Lake Charles has been growing for some time now. The water area is FULL of children during the peak summer times for sure. I used to swim and hang out at the beach, but I think they have since stopped swimming. Down town used to be a beautiful area and always busy. I think they are trying to bring it back from being somewhat deserted. Nonetheless, Lake Charles is a beautiful place to live and enjoy the laid back life compared to Lafayette.

I spent a lot of time in Lake Charles back around 1980. Didn’t live there but had many customers and friends in the area. Always enjoyed visiting there. Last time I was there was around 2020 or 2021 and the city had gone through a hurricane and hadn’t recovered from the damage. Hope all is well there these days.
We love taking trips to Lake Charles from Houston. The food is seriously excellent. They have some good shopping and dining options downtown and even more all over the Southern parts of town.
The hoods are along I-10 to the East and North of downtown. There are a few bad spots in the South side, but it is mostly safe there.
Lake Charles is getting back to life after the 2020 hurricanes. A lot of buildings have been demolished including the tallest downtown office tower. Many more buildings are scheduled for demolition all across the city.
The downtown park has a huge playground as you showed. The lakefront has a lot of things to do. There is a sand beach, live alligator pond, new museum, Veterans Memorial area with tanks, a WTC park with 2 beams from the actual WTC in New York. The city is reconstructing the old pathways to connect the Beach to the end of Downtown. Downtown has a nice quaint business district with some good local coffee shops, restaurants, antique stores, a vintage music shop, art, and some live music venues.
You also can't forget the upscale casinos impact on the area. The South side of town has really grown up since the luxury casinos began opening in 2005.
My friends Carl and Chelsea are the owners of that cool coffee shop on Broad St downtown called Stellar Beans
@jamestingle5417 They have some good stuff over there. Coffee and beignets are excellent.
The old bridge has dueling pistols marking the railings that are a tribute to Jean Lafitte. I'm sure you didn't slow down to look at those, did you Joe?

Hello guys. That bridge is called the I-10 bridge and the other bridge on 210 loop is called I-210 bridge. There are two bridges that you have to cross on Highway 171 to get to Moss Bluff which is two miles north of Lake Charles and of those two bridges, the 1st one you cross when leaving LC is the Bayou River Bridge and the 2nd one you cross is the Calcasieu River Bridge. Lake Charles is also surrounded by two major rivers, the Calcasieu River and the Sabine River. That lake you’re talking about is Charles Lake and that river dumps into Calcasieu Lake which is just a few miles around the bend. And the gentleman that is pronounced Goos like Josh but in his name you hear the jossh like goosss damnit

The Faith has been in that area since the missionaries came there in the 1600s, when it was still part of La Florida.
Captain Goos, pronounced Goss, was my great great great great grandfather. Our family is very proud of the statue.
The bridge should have been closed years ago.

@@valenfitzen I believe it was known as “Goss’s” but that might have been the people I worked with. We ordered lunch from there. This was in early 1970s. I worked at the old First Federal by the post office. I loved my job….I was the runner and they had a car I used. I loved being out and abt. I went to the Courthouse almost every day but never to City Hall.

Don’t know if it’s been mentioned - a courthouse will always be called a courthouse because it is where (judicial) court is held. Different from a parish seat. Obviously called a parish seat because it is a parish and not a county. Just like a county seat can be where the courthouse is, but the courthouse will always be a courthouse. Two different things.
Please visit Natchez, MS. I visited Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas last Christmas break.
