Honda still makes the 650l I wish they still made the 400. I have new bikes too and just to see what my 400r could do I brought it to the track and it held its own pretty well. My crf450 obviously outperforms it but a lot of riders laughed at first when they saw a xr on a Mx track but couldn’t believe it was stock when I lapped some of them
Joseph Winkler I agree, the nostalgia part is what I love, I had an 86’ Yamaha IT 200, it was totally gone through from the tires up. I had lots of offers on it but had to much time and love in it so I couldn’t let her go. YZ 250 suspension, long rod kit, rad valve, full exhaust, etc. I’m telling you, that bike was so light and quick in the tight stuff, it really was impressive.
Hi, from Nova Scotia, Canada. Nice bike! I just finished my XR400r engine rebuild with New hotrod OEM crank, New Niche head, New Niche 89mm cylinder, New Namura 89mm piston, New HD head studs, New '02 CRF450 timing chain, New Wiseco valves, New Hotcam stg2, New FMF-SS power bomb header, CZR 'LOUD' pipe, New twin air filter and OEM screen, New jets for the carb 165/65, New OEM oil pump, New EBC cultch friction disc's and Cryogenically frozen steel plates, Electric start mod, New pro-X Inner clutch basket and pressure plate. I would like to get an inverted fork setup for the front and looking to buy a CRF450r/x or CR250R front end. After I get the hardware I will be stripping the frame to get it powder coated. The work and upgrades will probably keep going and wont end after that.
The engines on the air cooled xr's were literally bulletproof ! As long as you kept the oil n filter changed regularly and the air filter fresh these bikes are the TIMEX WATCHES of dirt bikes , raced them in the 80' as a expert/pro 250/350 XR
I bought one of these a few years short of the release of the 98 yz400 that I got, although a little heavy and not a powerhouse, that bike shredded black diamond trails! Just like the venerable XR600, also heavy and not too fast they somehow made the suspension work under them and were absolute BEASTS on ugly trails...I miss mine!
Finally someone did the frame in Red. Looks killer. Those that won an XR in any CC could car eless how much $$ they have in it vs worth. We just don't care because of how good they are.
Recently restored my 01 XR 400…. Truly an exceptional dirt bike and I have owned many brands.. My main woods weapon is my KTM 300 XC but I grab the XR for many outings… Nice build.👊
🤤I want this bike SOOO BAD! Man I need to find one & build it. I’ve been wanting an XR400 for so long. Everyone I see has been roached so I haven’t pulled the trigger. Kudos on this build!
This bike was such an inspiration as a youngster, dirt bike did a full centerfold spread on a bike very similar to this in like 98-00' or something. It was gorgeous, much like this one
OMG... That is one sexy motorcycle! What year is this bike? Years ago I had an old 1986 Honda XR600R that was bored out a little, had an aftermarket piston that added a point of compression and was rejetted... That bike was extremely fast and I loved it! But most of the riding I did was all high speed desert riding. Great video, thanks for sharing!
Bad ass XR right there! Drool factor 9 👍, I bought a 2003 road registered one last year with 3000miles on it, it’s mint, bit high for me so I bought a lowering link from XRs only in California it didn’t do much so i bought a donor seat & carved about an inch off the foam, it’s still a bit high but hey ho, it is what it is & at 56 its more than enough bike for the odd Saturday blast😬, beautiful build 👌
Just got my dad’s old 98’ xr400r running. Didn’t run for 8 years, cleaned the carb, gas tank, and adjusted the valves and it started right up. Literally older than me, yet still runs beautifully. I’d love to make a project out of the bike, maybe not go this far but would like to do some upgrades if anyone has any suggestions?
I have one of these gems and can't wait to get on with the restoration, Very nice job well done, I wont sell mine I will enjoy and not be tempted by greed
MrClean67 no that’s why I can’t find one to build my own like this every one is titled and made road legal now and they want and mint for them cuz of that. Plus my state doesn’t allow dirt bikes to be registered they have to be factory built dual sports here.
What state are you from? I'm from NJ and NJ DMV is the same way but there are "loopholes". I have plates and insurance on all of my off-road bikes. It's nice being able to legally ride the streets to the trails or enter events requiring registered bikes. Check out South Dakota and Vermont DMV. They do not require you to be one of their state residents to issue you a plate. You can buy a street legal light kit and Trail Tech speedometer through Rocky Mountain ATVMC.
MrClean67 I’m in Nebraska but ya I don’t want a xr400 for dual sport I want one to build like one from the mid 90s like what Spud Walters races in the Four Stroke Nationals so basically a Mx bike which is why I have no need for a street legal bike. But there cracking down big time here if the title says anything about off-road on it they won’t touch it. There were actually a few bikes a deal had bought from Colorado that the dmv wouldn’t touch cuz they were converted dirt bikes and not a factory built one. I’ve got my xr650l so I don’t need a dual sport lol just want a xr400 for a four stroke nats build lol
I understand your perspective. In NJ, having a plated "dirt bike" usually adds about a grand to the value. It's great for resale value since a future buyer doesn't have to worry if the bike's stolen if it's titled in the sellers name. A childhood friend of mine lives out in Omaha. IDK if you live in that area but there are a few riding clubs my buddy's active in: Omaha Adventure Riders and Nebraska Dual Sport. They're very active in organizing group rides and weeklong trips that I've taken part in. Definitely worth checking out on FB. 👍
MrClean67 ya that’s about how much they add here too and no I’m on the opposite side of the state I live just outside of Scottsbluff so I’m pretty close to Wyoming and Colorado. But ya I think the Nebraska Dual Sport riders is one of the groups I’m in but I’m also apart of the Frontrange riders from Colorado they do more rides through my area to South Dakota than the Nebraska one
I would never run USD. For fast desert racing the stock with correct valving and springs is superior to some random USDs. Estart would be amazing. Carbs yeah, I love stock carb on XR650R, but I'm the XR400, it's a pain in the ass, especially over water crossings.
Very very nice!...thinking on doing something similar on mine (not that amazing results of course!). Hoy much power increase should you expect from those extra 40cc?
You never get out what you put into a machine, especially the labor. But that’s not the point of building a nice bike like this one, the point is to have a bike that does what it was built to do, and does it well, that’s satisfying.
Hi Joshua, sorry for the delay, we missed this comment. It was from this guy, however the owner bought a pack that also had the rear guard bag with the tank cover and seat cover. ebay.to/2WQ43E8
What carb, what Jetting, Putting together my 2004 XR440, looking for a starting point on jetting. port cleaning, OEM head pipes weld ground out, Hot Cam stage one, air box mod, Mikuni TM36-68 pumper, FMF slip on. update. Lot's of backfire on throttle shut down, difficulty with idol and starting. went to 22.5 pilot and 142.5 main and is running now but will fine tune a bit more. Needle in middle position now. Sea level in PNW USA, so cool climate and high humidity.
When I purchased this bike I was very disappointed with the power but amazed with the ride/handling. Now I hope to have both. It's been parked for a decade.
This thing is very well done, wouldn't be surprised If the owner decided to never bring it on a trail to preserve it. I'd love an xr400, even beat up people want wild numbers for them so hasnt made sense to pick one up. Some day though.
I had one on my old XR200 back in 87. They were actually pretty popular to own, and they lasted a long time. I sold the 200, but still have the tank cover.
There vinyl like the seat covers basically only way to keep graphics on a XRs tank. O’Neal used to makes some for Mx bikes in the 80s I have a NOS tank cover for a 86 CR500

@@FullForceRacingAu Can't really blame him for that. Especially since he has other bikes he can ride. I know if it was me I would only ride it around the field, down the road, around the block, etc. just to give it a good run thru every once in awhile.
Rip that thing just don't go balls to the wall all the time I love mine I can putt around and still have fun or I can race it around there all around awesome bikes
As much as I love them They're still very dated, the xr650r is a real special one to me and Honda are fools for stopping production of such a great bike
Code Name Noob I recently walked out of a harbor freight there set an XL 500 with a 23 inch front tire. The years went by, decades passed And I realized I hadn’t had any fun in years. I got an Xr650l, Fell in love and bought a schnauzer.
Dude it may have more money than it’s worth tied up but I would rather have that bike than anything they have to offer on the showroom floor
That’s true there are some really nice 2020s I’ve always liked one offs and it kind of sparks nostalgia for me.
More than it's worth to who?
I’m not sure he says it in the video I think he means on the blue book market
Honda still makes the 650l I wish they still made the 400. I have new bikes too and just to see what my 400r could do I brought it to the track and it held its own pretty well. Started my 04 today. Gonna ride it tomorrow on my 45th birthday day. Love these bikes.
Wow what a lovely example of a well cared XR. Whoever owns this bike, congrats to you!
Nice job!
If you aren’t an xr fan you should be!
The XR is the true OG of the woods. Killer build my man
My 400 that I got when I was 14 is still in my garage, I could only hope to restore it half as nicely as this one. BEAUTIFUL bike!!

Them YZ400's were pretty powerful for back then, I remember driving a buddies and it hauled ass! I could walk it effortlessly in every gear.
Power is more than enaught for woods. It do powerwheelie even in 3rd gear.(with different gearing)
I had a couple of these & they are legend , except when your trying to use your kick start while perched half way up a precipice , but love em anyhow
Mark Mathews yeh, but even that didn’t stop us did it LOL. E start is cool though.
Love it had 3 xr 600 full respect to the love and money spent on this beuty

My main woods weapon is my KTM 300 XC but I grab the XR for many outings… Nice build.👊
If you ever doubt the XR 400 just look at the service intervals for a CRF 450
one of the best retro 400cc
This will be my inspiration. First road bike. I have raced motocross my whole life
“I’m not an XR fan”....out w your tongue

thats an awesome bike I miss riding those and it looks better than factory
Its really a bit of a show stopper. Best looking XR we have seen in the flesh thats for sure.
Probably nicest ever XR400, most of it is a few trick parts sprinkled about and then intense prep work on otherwise stock parts. Very sano.
I remember these from back when! Awsome looking XR

Awesomely restored bike i owned 2 of them in my time
I scored an '82 xl 500 I wish I could get it running that good .
Parts are too hard to find.
Amazing restoration. Would love to do the same to mine. Maybe one day!
I am rebuilding my xr400. An in depth video of the build would be awesome. What parts did you use for the engine (which 440 kit)

Where’d you get the tank decals from?
Looks and runs great!!! A tank cover?
Also where did you bought that tank cover from?
what a gem. how many HP here ?
May I know where you got the 440cc big bore kit? And links for it? 🤗
Looks mint and I love the frame colour.

Got the 250 ,want the 400 as well hence watching this.
They are definitely getting a bit of demand about them. Definitely a future classic!!!
Ugh! That dang front brake line is on the outside of the fork. Sorry just a pet peeve of mine lol. Very nice bike. Give me lots of ideas for mine
man that is a very clean bike love the xr line tough bikes
Beautiful I'm looking at doing something similar this year might go 650r if I can find a decent one
Good examples are climbing in price
Very very nice!...thinking on doing something similar on mine (not that amazing results of course!). Hoy much power increase should you expect from those extra 40cc?
Simply amazing result. Would you happen to have the paint code used for the frame?
Sorry we don't, he got it done at a local powder coating place. I dont think paint codes were shared

That’s what I call a do it all machine, excellent.
Beautiful bike! Do you have a link for where you got the wheel set? I have a 2001 and am looking for these exact wheels!
That's the same engine nx 400 Falcon??
How did you do that tank cover? Bike looks awesome!!
I absolutely love this bike you have nailed it big time👍
Very good work
AWESOME STUFF..... I'd love to wheelie it for miles.
I love it , but you should have chopped the tabs off the swingarm for the chain guard
Mesmo motor da falcon brasileira modelo 2000 a 2004 sem catalisador do cabeçote ! Mt show
Do those 440 kids make the bike run hotter than they do with factory displacement?
crazy how it sounds just like a modern crf 450
That’s one sharp bike!!
Hey there, beautiful build. Could you link the tank cover you used? Looks like great quality and would like to order the same. Thank you!

What is the deal with his gas tank is that some kind of wrap?
Thats wicked, seriously. Next up an actual enduro/trail ride vid
