Bunnies in the backyard: Eastern cottontail rabbits

  • We rarely see rabbits in person, but our cameras record them quite frequently as they bounce along the trails in the early morning and late afternoon. We love seeing them and wish there were more around.
    The foxes occasionally catch rabbits, which may explain why we have relatively few of them. We are always pleased to see that a fox has found some dinner but we're also very sad for the rabbit. Life is complicated.
    We've read that Eastern cottontail rabbits are territorial, and that might explain one of the clips we've included in this video. It shows a bunny chasing a skunk down at the water bowl. No one chases the skunks, not even the coyotes dare to upset them! But this little rabbit seemed intent on showing the skunk who was boss and the skunk was in no mood to argue, it dodged the charging rabbit and waddled hastily off down the trail.
    For more great critter videos please take a look at our website, at texasbackyardwildlife.com.

    Adorable. So funny that a rabbit can chase off a skunk!

    With ears like that, they should be able to hear foxes *breathing* in the den!

      I know. Fabulous ears. And they use them like antennae, don't they? We see the deer do the same kind of thing. Their faces will seem to be attending to something in front of them, but their ears will be listening to a full 360 degrees all around them.

    Seeing that baby bunny in the den reminds me of watching one of the foxes last year chow down on a bunny snack. Yeah, I won't go into the details, but that imagery has definitely stayed with me.

      I know. Poor little bunny. We know the foxes have got to eat, but...

    Another wonderful video! Thank you ...
    I love the term "cottontail" 😃

      I know, isn't it perfect? Their little tails are white underneath, they look as if they are made of cotton balls (we call them "cotton wool" balls in the UK & NZ).

    That's funny about him running off the skunk

      We thought it was hilarious. We laughed like children and replayed the video clip about 100 times.

    I love the compilations that I normally wouldn't get to see otherwise. My schedule being what it is, I never know what hour I'll be checking in.

    They're going to turn into DoorDash if they're not careful. Crazy wabbits. I wonder if assertiveness is just the local breed. I can't imagine a successful end-game once a rabbit catches something. Nice find, and well-presented. Thank you :)

      It amused us that the skunk ran away from the rabbit. Skunks don't run away from anyone. They stand their ground and woe betide the creature who pushes them too far. We're assuming that the rabbit didn't want to actually catch the skunk, but he certainly wanted the water bowl to himself.

    So cute! I've never seen a wild rabbit in person before (never lived where's there's any, although I have seen many lovely hares) so these kinds of videos are a godsend, I love to see these guys go around doing their things

      They are sweet animals. There's one living around here at the moment who has only one ear. A close encounter with a fox or coyote? Here's a link to some more rabbit videos on our website: texasbackyardwildlife.com/mammals/rabbits/

    The rabbits in the den remind me of high schoolers daring each other to break into an abandoned building. (Not that I know anything about that, of course. 😅)

    • @TexasBackyardWildlife
      @TexasBackyardWildlife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. They have a slightly anxious and guilty look on their faces.

    Wow, another sheriff in the woods and he's so cute. The raccoon's eyes say "what's that, should I be scared?". Very funny. If he doesn't have a name yet, Roger Rabbit would be good. Many Thanks TBW

    • @TexasBackyardWildlife

      We like to think that both the rabbit and the raccoon were thoroughly embarrassed to have been so frightened. However, it's easy for us to laugh (and believe me, we did) but for these guys it was totally dark and they were afraid they were about to be eaten by a coyote.

    The magic tree den is getting a bit torn up.

    • @TexasBackyardWildlife
      @TexasBackyardWildlife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Kes! Great to hear from you. The magic tree den has a solid walnut floor (only the best...) and the raccoons have still managed to tear up parts of it. And they've torn wood off the logs that line the inside and dug up a big pile of dirt from somewhere. They are nature's little vandals.

    They are crepuscular critters! This means they come out in the evening.

    • @TexasBackyardWildlife

      Yes, they're crepuscular - most active at dawn and dusk, just like deer.

    Some of the final scene got blocked by popups. Can you pad some "dead time" at the end so the popups don't block good content? Great video though. Thanks.

      Wow! That's really annoying. We had no idea YT had started doing that (or maybe we just hadn't noticed it before). We can't be the only ones it's annoying. I bet it's something we can control and turn off. THANK YOU!

      I found the setting. Unfortunately, we hired an UpWork freelancer to help us optimize the channel and it looks as though he added End Screens to some of the videos. We're going to have to go through and remove them. Thank you so much for pointing this out. We had no idea.

      @@TexasBackyardWildlife Cool. I liked your video cuz I just found a nest last Saturday and the mom kept the crows away and I kept the foxes away. Now they've all left the nest and are off doing other bunny things.
