The Truth Behind 134 Fiat Topolinos Confiscated for Tricolor Sticker
134 Fiat Topolinos seized at the port of Livorno for the tricolor sticker
More problems for Stellantis in its relationship with "Made in Italy". This time, the problem concerns the small Fiat Topolino , an electric quadricycle that we know well and which was born on the basis of the Citroen Ami . What happened? Apparently, on 15 May 134 examples of the electric quadricycle (119 Fiat Topolino and 15 Fiat Topolino Dolcevita) were seized by the Financial Police and the Customs and Monopolies Agency at the port of Livorno.
The news was reported for the first time by Il Tirreno but then quickly spread around the internet. The reason for the seizure? According to what was written by the newspaper, the cars bore stickers with the Italian flag . For this reason, the " fallacious indication of the origin of the product " was contested . We remind you that the Fiat Topolino is produced in Morocco .
The crime complained of is therefore the sale of industrial products with false signs. It seems that there is even a suspect , namely the prosecutor of Stellantis Europa. In short, the tricolor flags on the doors were considered by the investigators to be misleading signs for the final consumer . In particular, the seizure was ordered pursuant to article 4, paragraph 49, of the Financial Law of 2004 (24 December 2003 number 350).
The import and export for marketing purposes or marketing or the commission of acts aimed unequivocally at the marketing of products bearing false or misleading indications of origin constitutes a crime and is punished pursuant to article 517 of the penal code . The stamping "made in Italy" on products and goods not originating from Italy constitutes a false indication in accordance with European legislation.
The Fiat Topolinos are currently in judicial storage at the Leonardo Da Vinci terminal and at the Port Company Company terminal where they will remain until their eventual release.
    STELLANTIS' ANSWER
The reply from Stellantis was not long in coming and through one of its spokespersons declared:
To resolve every issue, it was decided to intervene on the seized vehicles by removing the small stickers subject to authorization from the authorities. The sticker in question had the sole purpose of indicating the entrepreneurial origin of the product. In fact, the design of the new Topolino, which has been a historic car for Fiat since 1936, was conceived and developed in Turin by a team of professionals from the FIAT Style Center of Stellantis Europe SpA, an Italian company. Furthermore, since the presentation of the new model, the Company has always been clear in declaring that it is manufactured in Morocco. We therefore believe that we have operated in full compliance with the regulations, transparently communicating the country of production of Topolino, without any deceptive intent towards consumers.
