  • I picked up a NEW Vulcan MigMax 215 from Harbor Freight. It is one in their newest lineup of welders. I unbox, setup, and review it on120 volt power. More on this welder in future video's.

    You had it set in Synergic mode, you need to be set in manual mode to use the chart on the side. The way you were welding was Auto Set for 15g with 030 wire. Just a heads up in case you didn't know about that feature. In Synergic mode all you pick is wire size/material thickness/process. The machine will set voltage and wire feed speed automatically.

    you probably could weld aluminum if you use a short length gun ,.035 wire ,and straight argon

    Another good review Steve,also have learned that buying local is better. For one,your supporting local stores,jobs,also in regards to returns,or other related questions pertaining to product,its nice to look at the product,talk to a store rep,as just looking at pics and reviews online.
    Also Steve wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas.

    Your video is one of the reasons I bought this welder--nice job. I would point out that the owners manual states that if you are using the manual settings chart, you set the wire diameter selector to "Manual"...the wire size is only used for synergistic welding.

    If you put the thickness knob at 3/8 for 3/8" metal or 10, and then look at the setting info on the lid, you will find that the recommenced setting for 0.45 flux core wire is J/8.5. I brought this discrepancy to the attention of Harbor Freight Technical Support but they had to escalate it to a corporate engineer, I understand. Also, another example of a discrepancy, for instance, is the recommended setting for 0.035 solid wire and C100. On the lid for 240 volts for 1/8" it says D4 but if you set the left knob at 1/8" on the front panel to 1/8" the corresponding point is midway between 6 and 7. Are the synergic settings and the manual settings supposed to be so much different?
    I understand you are supposed to refer to the chart on the lid for the manual settings and for the synergic settings, you go by the orange highlighted thicknesses that are around the thickness knob.
    Can anyone explain the discrepancies I have found? Thanks.

    • @XplorerSteveDIY
      @XplorerSteveDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I cannot explain it. I usually set manually on any welder. usually the auto set gets you close but just a slight tweak in feed or heat range can sweeten a weld.

    I had the same experience with the Green Machine you mention at the start of your video (Everlast Generators). I purchased the 350EXT off Amazon because I was sure to receive it however I ordered a TIG accessory kit directly from Everlast. After a week I inquired about the order status and the answer was about one month delivery. No email, no explanation so I canceled the order.

    Just FYI, when you have the wire thickness knob set on a thickness instead of manual, it is using synergic settings. All you need to do is set the voltage knob to the appropriate thickness on the front of the machine and it sets the voltage and WFS automatically. To use the chart on the inside of the panel, you need to set the wire knob to manual. Good video. I have the same machine. I like it so far.

    • @XplorerSteveDIY
      @XplorerSteveDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is true. Synergic is a great feature. It is nice to go manual and dial it in as well. I failed to differentiate between the two. Thanks. I really like the machine so far as well.

    Might wanna read the manual. When you use one of the synergic wire speeds, not the manual one, the welder will vary voltage and wire speed automatically. Only when you set it on manual wire thickness does it let you fine tune the welding yourself.

      @XplorerSteveDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looks like a lot more of a quality welder than their previous line, I've never had occaision to try a HF welder. Strange that it comes with the old 3 blade style 50 amp plug. Nice that it has a EN and EP switch on it, no manual polarity switching needed inside by the feed rollers. I guess brand "E" is just too busy, they seem to get good reviews but I hear alot of bad about their customer service. Time to lay some beads!! 👍

    • @XplorerSteveDIY
      @XplorerSteveDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This does seem to beat their old product line by leaps and bounds. Like I said, I called their customer support to verify that the engineer who worked on Lincoln's line of inverter welders helped to develop these.

    I worked with a lot of welders. Very important work especially in the oil industry! I’m impressed you chained the bottles as per OSHA General Industry Standards. I looked at his videos and found them kind of condescending. He called the Vulcan Omni max 220 an "omelette master." I couldn't take his review as impartial because of that, especially since a green colored welder company sends their product to him as a channel sponsor. I like his channel though.

    • @steelfist65
      @steelfist65 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Xplorer Steve DIY, I agree. I don't think he is unbiased in his review, either. It's easy to get lost when you have a lot of manufacturers sending you products to endorse. I like his channel as well, but lately it's just too silly.

    • @waltschannel7465
      @waltschannel7465 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that harbor freight really tried to provide good value. I was a bit worried about that so I bought one of the older style Chicago Electric welders (mig 180) with a 1 year warranty so if a hated it, I could trade it for the Mig Max. I think I'm good, however. The Mig 180 is a lot cheaper, and does what I need.

  • @Fireship1
    @Fireship1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Harbor Freight has really upped the ante. They are making some decent quality stuff the last few years. I have two of their US General pro tool boxes and I love them. My US general 60 gallon compressor was a steal next to more expensive brands. HF isn’t what it used to be. It’s much better.

    I would like to pick up welding as a hobby one day but I noticed that this one require 220V hook up and gas. Do all welder require the use of gas? I don't like too many flammable items in my garage and would like to avoid this if possible.

    • @XplorerSteveDIY
      @XplorerSteveDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This welder runs off of 110 as well, although you can't weld as thick of material. the same welder can run with "flux core wire". The gas used is argon/oxygen mixture and is not flammable.

  • @CITAP1
    @CITAP1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That Vulcan does look like a decent welder. The last three items I bought from Harbor Freight I've been happy with. They do have some cheap stuff but they also have better grade stuff. There are things I still wouldn't buy there but in general, the store serves a niche.
    So what sort of project you have planned coming up. Ornamental iron art? Home prison cell for burglars? Take care...

    Very good, clear review. Plan on picking one of these up in about a month when taxes come in. I had a Hobart 240 volt, but ended up selling it due to reasons. I like the dual voltage so if someone ask you to do a welding project you can do it right where they are. I don't know how much business I lost not being able to weld where the job was, due to not having 120 volt capabilities.

    • @XplorerSteveDIY

    I have one question does the wire speed stay at a slow consistant speed when there's no arc even if the knob is cranked up? Reason I ask Is i was going to buy a second hand one locally but wire speed would not increase as I would crank up the knob this was just by pressing the trigger not arcing any metal. Is that how it runs? Thanks

    Thanks for your efforts in the vid! I'm new to MIG and a bit cornfused about the gauge readings. When I look at my gauge it seems like the SCFH is in red, not black. The black looks like a measurement of L/min (liters per min?) The settings guide sez between 20-30 SCFH best I can tell. So should I be using the red or black scale? Thanks! d:^)
