Totally agree. The feel is completely different. I am pretty sure it's the gating on the mic's. A lot of times when a snare drum is gated heavily you loose all of the ghost notes.
Played many times on drums live in the eighties nineties this song and among others Like the effort playing the Spirit Of Radio in this program which I use for ideas structure. I have to agree the grace notes and bassdrum are to dominant to busy specially on the bell part and to push this nicely forward to my knowledge using a syncopation bassline/bell and after the cound two 16th on the bell
The thing about Rush is that you could isolate each of the three musicians and their part would be a masterclass in the instrument. Put them together and you get real music that most bands could only dream of.
Not to mention how full they sound for only having 3 members. They sound like a band of 4 or 5 but theres only 3. Most bands with only 3 members sound more empty. It's insane how amazing they are.
Yes. I have been playing guitar for 40 years. I watched the Alex Lifeson lesson on spirit of radio. Two weeks later i finally got it to where it is acceptable. Its not just notes the timing the feel takes a bit. Especially the opening riff.

I'm struck by the opposite. By how much liberty he takes in placing certain hits. Lots of pulling back. Which doesn't say it's not precise, but it's not squarely in the middle.
I'm 40, growing up my dad owned an automotive shop, and he always had the local rock station on the radio, so I heard a lot of stuff in my early years. Even well before I ever learned to play an instrument, I always knew Rush was the real deal, Neil Peart's drumming just spoke to me in a way nobody else could, it sounded so incredible. I was hooked before I was 10. RIP Mr Peart, and thank you for everything.
I never noticed how far on the back end of the beat he plays at times on this track. Just laid way back in the pocket! RIP Neil... you definitely influenced this drummer.
THE best isolated drum track on TH-cam. How he made all 4 limbs play independently blows me away. This genuine artist made the drums a featured instrument just like a lead guitar before any other drummer way back in the 70s, a true innovator. The world lost one of THE greatest drummers of all time; moreso when it's taken into account he played the entire R40 tour knowing he had brain cancer. and knowing full well his time on this earth was limited. Rest in peace, Mr. Peart, you're with your wife and daughter forever, and your music will last forever. And the 85 morons who disliked this cut should go back to their Justin Bieber tunes.

One thing I've noticed listening to isolated drum tracks, no matter who the drummer is, or how good they are technically, they are all incredibly steady. That is the most important thing a drummer must be.

I always thought the nickname was a reference to his playing ability, until I read this on Neil's site. In the words of the Professor himself; An even earlier nickname given to me, “The Professor,” had an an equally ironic root. It was not, as many strangers assumed, some reflection of admiration from the Guys at Work for my intellect and learning. Oh no. Nor did it reflect an actual university degree, as some rumors held. No, the Guys at Work were simply equating my demeanor with the character on “Gilligan’s Island,” played by Russell Johnson. Not terribly insulting-but not exactly cool, either.
Let's just acknowledge that we ALL miss him greatly. So glad to be alive in the Modern Renaissance and listen to the Masters. Our Generation's Mozart on the Drum kit.
I'm not a drummer but my best friend growing up was one. At a certain point you either learn to appreciate the craft or else you go insane. Rip Neil Peart truly one of the goats in his field (not to mention his incredible songwriting)
I have always said that there is no band that keeps time like Rush. Play their music in a good pair of headphones and you can’t deny it. Rush is tighter than the drums Neil is banging on. Simply impeccable.

Fucking amazing! You really hear TONS more when the track is isolated like this. There are so many ghost notes and extra hits EVERYWHERE! This literally blew me away, his playing on this track is so much more amazing than I’ve always thought it was. The best part, to me at least, is the parts where it sounds like he played an off note, or was slightly out of rhythm. Then he plays off of it and turns it into a beautiful fill, and you realize that it's all intentional.
Most of rush where heavily inspired by what is known as "music comedy". Its a term used by composers for notes that at first make absolutely no sense and dont fit in but than realizing later its intentional and actually something really good. Kinda like messing up a project building off it than making it better than it originally was. A lot of composers especially in progressive genres are well known for this (see any dream theater song ever)

To the countless people saying "I didn't realize/hear him play this on the recorded track..": That was decades ago and a different performance. It's 100% likely he has evolved this to stay interested and challenge himself.
ROOKTABULA this is the track off of the album I believe so this is what he played 40 years ago. The mix just didn’t have certain things come thru. No matter what drummer or track you listen to isolated is going to reveal things you’ve never heard before

Being a former drummer, I was always asked, "Can you play like Neil Peart?" I would say, "No. If I even attempt to try, both of my drumsticks will turn to salt!" Couldn't then. Couldn't now. RIP Neil. You are a legend.
It's 89 now. How can you dislike this? I'm a drummer... a good one, and I think it's great. It inspires me to get better. I hear a few mistakes in there, which makes me feel a bit better about mine. Nobody's perfect, not even Neil.

Having the ability to play in such a precise, intricate, busy, technical fashion is talent in the extreme, but remember, Neil had to first write it! Incredible. I feel bad for up-and-coming generations and generations of rock drummers who have to chase such a stratospherically high bar.

My view is Rush aren't even a normal blues-based rock band, everything they do is like Custom-built for their own thing. They are a one-off. They can't really play with other bands and there's no point even copying what they do.

There is just an unbelievable amount of technical precision and detail in almost everyone one of Rush's mid and late period work albums for your average muso to relate to. It really would be some feat for them to pull this off in a convincing way. Rush really were truly one of kind that have no peers! I particularly liked the more stripped down sound on Caress of Steel and their debut album myself!
I’m a 26 year old Millennial, born in ‘93. I work full time doing Heating and Cooling, and my partner/teacher is a 51 year old Gen X’er, who plays drums. Now I love all the classic rock bands and that’s what we listen to on the radio. But he always says when he’s listening all he hears are the drums! He was devastated about Neil. RIP and Rock On, Neil! 🤘
This was great! I have been playing it wrong all these years. The ghost notes on the snare really add so much more. You can’t hear them on the original. This was really awesome! Neil was the reason I became a drummer. Truly one in a trillion! These Isolation tracks are amazing! Keep em coming!
I never realized how much footwork he really does in this song. It's quite amazing. Plus the little ghost notes he throws on the snare to fill the gaps. Its definatly far more to take in than I imagined.

Holymacinoles....my heavens....Peart says he was not talented but everyone else listening to or watching him play knows otherwise....seriously, hearing him play, seeing him play and then looking at his sheet music are really three different experiences. What I remember as a child (as I was approaching teen years back in the day) he inspired everyone to air drum, then others to actually learn to play. Rest in peace, Neil Peart. 40 yrars of listening to neils drumming but I'd never heard the extra bass drum pedal strokes that he plays in this song. A lot more complex than i ever knew and sounds a lot quicker tempo in this version. Going to have to closely listen to studio version again.
So after listening to this and reading the comments, I got out my nice headphones and played this song on Spotify. The Professor is 100% playing all those ghost notes on the kick and snare.
I've been listening to this song since it came out just over 40yrs ago. I never knew there were so many extra hits in this song. Neil was always amazing and to hear this its like rediscovering or hearing the song for the first time. I will say that it sounded like they were falling apart at the end of the song. Somebody (to my ear) slowed the tempo and the time sounds like milliseconds off. Still fantastic and I'm sure this song is a total workout. Time changes, tons of notes....
The ride cymbal in this song is responsible for making me a fan when I was a teen. I'd hear this on the car radio and the drum patterns were immediately different, I just didn't understand how back then...

As a kid,brothers having band in our basement,5-12,I played hagstrom bass and tried rush,strat for rest of my years,but drums from rush is not duplicated . Great stuff. Perfect timing and suspense in each beat

Later in his career he started improvising more.
Maybe it wasn't there in the studio recording. I think the added "grooviness" makes more sense in a live version than in the studio recording anyway.

These songs are so amazingly that you could isolate each of the 3 parts and still have a listenable song. I think Neal found drum sticks in the cave not a guitar.

It's 89 now. How can you dislike this? I'm a drummer... a good one, and I think it's great. It inspires me to get better. I hear a few mistakes in there, which makes me feel a bit better about mine. Nobody's perfect, not even Neil.
Yeah...it's at 93 now and headed for hundreds more whom are shamed before the greatness of Sir Pratt! (Personally I think that it's themselves they dislike as they try to follow along in realization that...this sound is real, not a game.)
Just amazing. He was such a great student of other great drummers. He was generous of sharing his techniques in some other videos he has made. Very modest, humble person. RIP Neil. We will miss you.

Having the ability to play in such a precise, intricate, busy, technical fashion is talent in the extreme, but remember, Neil had to first write it! Incredible. I feel bad for up-and-coming generations and generations of rock drummers who have to chase such a stratospherically high bar.

My view is Rush aren't even a normal blues-based rock band, everything they do is like Custom-built for their own thing. They are a one-off. They can't really play with other bands and there's no point even copying what they do.
@@j_freed I always felt that as well. There is just an unbelievable amount of technical precision and detail in almost everyone one of Rush's mid and late period work albums for your average muso to relate to. It really would be some feat for them to pull this off in a convincing way. Rush really were truly one of kind that have no peers! I particularly liked the more stripped down sound on Caress of Steel and their debut album myself!

I’m a 26 year old Millennial, born in ‘93. I work full time doing Heating and Cooling, and my partner/teacher is a 51 year old Gen X’er, who plays drums. Now I love all the classic rock bands and that’s what we listen to on the radio. But he always says when he’s listening all he hears are the drums! He was devastated about Neil.

This was great! I have been playing it wrong all these years. The ghost notes on the snare really add so much more. You can’t hear them on the original. This was really awesome! Neil was the reason I became a drummer. Truly one in a trillion! These Isolation tracks are amazing! Keep em coming!

I never realized how much footwork he really does in this song. It's quite amazing. Plus the little ghost notes he throws on the snare to fill the gaps. Its definatly far more to take in than I imagined.

Wow. That was so freaking cool, man. I am blown away. Many years ago I put food on my table with my ability to play drums. This destroyed what is left of my fragile eggshell mind.
Holymacinoles....my heavens....Peart says he was not talented but everyone else listening to or watching him play knows otherwise....seriously, hearing him play, seeing him play and then looking at his sheet music are really three different experiences. What I remember as a child (as I was approaching teen years back in the day) he inspired everyone to air drum, then others to actually learn to play. Rest in peace, Neil Peart. Ahead of your time but still blowing the minds of others with your drumming....

40 yrars of listening to neils drumming but I'd never heard the extra bass drum pedal strokes that he plays in this song. A lot more complex than i ever knew and sounds a lot quicker tempo in this version. Going to have to closely listen to studio version again.

I've been listening to this song since it came out just over 40yrs ago. I never knew there were so many extra hits in this song. Neil was always amazing and to hear this its like rediscovering or hearing the song for the first time. I will say that it sounded like they were falling apart at the end of the song. Somebody (to my ear) slowed the tempo and the time sounds like milliseconds off. Still fantastic and I'm sure this song is a total workout. Time changes, tons of notes....
I had heard this song soooooo many times and never appreciated (or heard) the groove he was really playing in the verse. Too cool!!

The ride cymbal in this song is responsible for making me a fan when I was a teen. I'd hear this on the car radio and the drum patterns were immediately different, I just didn't understand how back then...

As a kid,brothers having band in our basement,5-12,I played hagstrom bass and tried rush,strat for rest of my years,but drums from rush is not duplicated . Great stuff. Perfect timing and suspense in each beat

Amazing. - rush exit stage left was my first cd ever - received it as a gift from my dad in 1985 and was 7 years old attempting this song. It’s 2020 and for the first time have many questions answered, especially dynamically. This post is immeasurable in importance to me. Thank you!!
