It is refreshing to not have a highly edited perfect build, but rather the rather real adventure of building a new and awesome project. Well done! Look forward to many more!
Thanks man! I'm a normal Hewman 😅 and make mistakes. It's about the process and adapting to the changing situation! Thanks for the support! More fun things to come!
Man did you screw up a lot. I was very frustrated watching this video. Thanks for making it. With your large amount of quality tools and your obviously very high level of intelligence and creativity you still made lots of mistakes. This shows how difficult a "simple" project really was. To continue to have patience was great to see. I subscribed after seeing how wonderful it turned out for you. The room looks great and it shut perfectly. Nice job, true expert,
Thank you! I think? Seems like a few back handed compliments here, but all in all, I appreciate your comment. The fact is, everyone makes mistakes and being able to show them instead of editing them all out is important. Building is a process and it's more about how you adapt and overcome the issues than nailing it first time out.
You can't learn everything from books, sometimes you have to just get out there and try to make a THING yourself! The nailgun was fun! Lots of editing for 1/2 a second, but totally worth it!! 😆
No plan can definitely be a good or a bad thing. When you're figuring something out sometimes it is best to just work through the process and know you'll need to deal with issues as they come up. Cheers bro!
I have a room with a fake wall with a doorway cut out now for a year. Been sketching up so many ways to finally build the fake door. You sir are my hero. Can’t wait to one day see the reaction of the people we sell our house to as well that should be fun
YES! That sounds amazing! Hopefully my video has helped and you can make your secret room a reality! I'd love to see the finished piece (I'll keep it a secret 🤫)
Hahaha, Murphy door! Doesn't that mean it should contain a bed? And...just because I had no idea what I was doing in the form of making a secret door, doesn't mean I don't have a general idea of what I'm doing in life...right?
About 15 years ago I made one almost just like that but larger which divided an office space in the garage, so I could have a 4 ft wide grow room hidden. It worked like a charm. Even the molding locked in over the wall and it looked like a wall
You are so refreshing to watch throughout the build, kept the interest of how it finished even though I already seen the finished version. Love the hide door way. Will be hoping back on for more of your builds. 😊
I commented from my other channel, but this here is my carpentry Channel. I will definitely send people your way just for the humor alone. I like your style bro
Working on building a hidden room bookcase myself! Using 3 of these hinges as the bookcase will be entirely full of books, one of which is the book that unlocks the door! Of course we are added a cane lock on the inside should anyone ever need to use that room to hide.
Why doesn't this have like a hundred thousand views. I found my way from instagram.. Sooooo.. wanna come to norway and fix this for me.. dont have a place in my apartment to make this but you know🤷🏼♀️ bookshelf of my dreams🤣
I know! RIGHT! Haha, do you have a hundred thousand friends you can have watch it? 🤣 I'd love to come to Norway and install a hidden bookcase!!! Sounds like an adventure!
Hey...just found your channel through search. Thought I would drop a comment here seen as I loved the video style and project its self. Looks great!!! Looking forward to checking out more of your videos!! 😊
Hey! Welcome to my silly little corner of the internet! I see you're a woodworker/maker also! 100% sub'd and I'm going to find you on IG also! Can't wait to check out your work also!! ☺
Thank you for the warm welcome, I appreciate it. Yup, love woodworking and making things in general. Appreciate the sub and insta, thank you! Glad I found your channel, throughly enjoying your content. ✌🏻
The depth does matter. You need to make sure the back of the bookcase will be able to swing through and clear the door frame. If you go to around the 3 min mark in the video you can see how the door swing works and what you'd need to figure out for clearance.
This is so great. Really enjoyed it. My husband and I are planning one in the basement and I came across your video in my research. How much weight do you think it could hold? Do you think it could handle being filled with books? Or do you think leaving it to a few books and some decor is better?
Very cool! I think it's all going to depend on the full size/depth of the bookcase to start. SOSS has guides on their website for the hinge weights so even adding up all your books weight would give you a good idea of what hinges to get. Mine has wheels on the non-hinge side to help with weight distribution as well. If it's build with the intention of a full bookcase in mind and you take that into account, it probably should be able to handle the weight.
If you watch part 2 th-cam.com/video/O0ysh3kib3Q/w-d-xo.html I do some trimming around the 4:30 mark. But it's not trimmed in the normal way. I ended up just painting the 2x6 I used as the 'trim'. If you're looking for a better look at trimming it out I have a second series where I did a maple face frame and the bookcase overall is 1000% better than my first attempt in this video. Here's the link to part 1 in that series th-cam.com/video/NGHrLJN-nyY/w-d-xo.html
I think I used 2 3/4" hinges for the bookcase. But the size is dependent on the operation you're using them for. I think there's a chart or a guideline on SOSS website for the size recommendations
Well....When I made this bookcase I was still a corporate drone working in IT and hadn't gone full time into woodworking. Plus it was my first bookcase, let alone secret bookcase. So I feel like I didn't quite know what I was doing when I made it. The second one I made for a client was much better! There's another series on that one if you're interested in seeing my progression 😉
Please, be my guest. You make one, post the entire build process on the internet and then I'll come judge your quality of work without seeing it in person. You up for challenge or are you just going to be a keyboard troll hiding in your parents basement?
