      Not to detract a thing from Yes, with America and Close to the Edge being favorite tracks, but if you like Yes, you should give Gentle Giant a spin. Each member is a multi-instrumentalist, and the band is quite Proggy.

    • @joefry22
      @joefry22 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      So true. With that crunchy, trebly high-end sound of his bass, there are times when it sounds almost like a second electric guitar, with his lines and Howe's lines intertwining in the most inexplicably cool way. And the older I get (and having played in bands where the bassist is overly busy or showboaty) the more I appreciate how Squire could come up with those amazingly complex, odd-time-signature bass lines, but somehow they don't seem needlessly busy or self-consciously "prog" - they just seem like well-orchestrated bass parts by a guy who understood song arrangements and was just a complete MASTER of his instrument. How he was able to play with so much dexterity, sing complex harmonies -- and still look like he was having a blast and loving life when he was onstage - is just beyond me.

      Read this just now on wiki, “Guitarist Steve Howe considers Yes's version to be "a kind of lost recording" among the band's work, since it has rarely been included on their compilations, and when it is it is usually a shortened version. When he had the chance to meet Simon in person at a disaster-relief concert in 1992, Howe asked him if he liked Yes's version, and Simon said he did.”

      Total agreement here :-) It was at a time when Steve still needed to 'prove himself' as the band's new guitarist.
      I think that sentiment also lead to one of his greatest contributions to YES, the fabulous "Yours is No Disgrace" with that soaring, vibrant, ultrarhythmic guitar solo by which Steve introduced himself to the fans.
      See how Jon asks the camera man at 3:09 to point his camera to Steve, apparently knowing which guitar goodies are about to follow.

    This is no cover tune. It's the culmination of the song itself. YES absolutely owned it from the first organ run to the last decay of the bass note! This is what the song wanted to be all along. What a guitar solo! Everthing from chicken pickin to jazz to 70's flutey distortion. A masterclass in composition and performance. So, yeah. I like the song a little.

      As much as I like it (I had the single at the time), it's not a patch on S&G's sublime original - rather it's a worthy variation for those who prize technical prowess over atmosphere and reflection (which is a technical feat in itself) - never a culmination. It's main strength is when they stick close to, or emphasise, Simon's incomparable melody.
      Simon's America is the perfect song!
      Give it another listen and notice how free-form it is with no rhymes.
      It was First Aid Kit's (faithful) live rendition that brought Simon to tears and caused him to stand and applaud - a break in protocol in the presence of the monarch, you don't stand while the monarch sits. The rest of the audience remained seated

This is indeed an unparalleled cover, but they also did two other covers that no one else could have come close to, The Byrds' "I See You" and Buffalo Springfield's "Everydays", with Tony Kaye on keyboard and Peter Banks on guitar. Ronda Garcia ... Good on you, Ronda, for noticing (at the age of thirteen, no less) the extraordinary talent of Bill Bruford. For it is well to point out that, in addition to being an extraordinary drummer, Bill has always been a consummate musician who is possessed of a unique creative vision. In that respect. it is further well to point out that, though Jon Anderson was undoubtedly the chief visionary and architect of Yes, it is doubtful whether the concept of Yes would ever have evolved without the HUGE creative contribution that Bill Bruford brought to the group. Lastly, one might also observe that the very painful decline of the music of Yes started when Bill Bruford left the band.

    • @dougmphilly
      @dougmphilly 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Fallen Angel bill has stated many times that the direction that yes was going no longer interested him. the clash of ego's might had been too much. in kc, its fripp's band but the ability to improv and rework songs had to appeal to his jazz roots. my bet is that after close to the edge, bill said there is all there is and left on his own. there were talks by bill that he thought chris squire was a bit heavy handed running the band to the point of being unprofessional.

    • @dougmphilly
      @dougmphilly 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dia Bolique i remember reading somewhere that yes without jon anderson's strong leadership was a shadow of itself. jon might have had the least amount of chops, but he had the vision. i doubt if jon was as autocratic as fripp, but sometimes you can have too much democracy and not enough leadership.

    I’ve always loved this rendition of AMERICA and to see Jon, Steve, Bill, Chris and Rick locked in was chilling. Saw this incarnation of the band at Bryant College in Rhode Island. Some friends and I had gotten there waaaay early ( general admission ) and as we were waiting, I turned around and there was a tall gentleman with flowing blonde hair accompanied by his bandmates and others when Jon asked, “ We’re Yes , is this Bryant ?” and they literally tore the roof off, they were THAT good !

    So cool that Chris Squire is wearing a jersey from "The Warehouse New Orleans". That was such a great place that hosted many of the greatest bands and musical artists from the 60s & 70s in particular. My first introduction to YES was at The Warehouse as the back up band to Jethro Tull on July 4, 1971 as a teenager. What an awesome night that was for music. I remember being half-interested in them at the start of the concert (I had not yet heard any of their music) and a big fan by the end of it. Still a big fan.

      When I was 17 (in 1981) it was totally UNCOOL to like the music of YES. We had just been through British punk and 'disco' music, American New Wave was on the rise, and old dinosaurs doing weird stuff that lasted longer than four whole minutes was totally frowned upon. And then that name of their music: 'symphonic rock', ugh!
      Yet i've always supported YES because they are a REAL BAND (not some studio creation depending on 'computers') who displayed creativity, smart musical ideas, a total dexterity on their instruments, somehow lingering lyrics, and they could really really rock if they wanted to.
      Much more YES music lies in wait for you to discover, Michael. So open your ears, and give it a go. I'd say: start with 'Close To The Edge', 'Fragile' and 'Going for the One'. Enjoy!

    To me, listening to Yes in these early years, I always felt I was listening to " *Chris Squire's Band* " I absolutely loved the way he dominated their early sound, with that growling, thumping bass sound he experimented into history. And even though he dominated their overall sound, he never squeezed out all of the melodies and harmonies that also contributed to their sonic masterpieces.
    _Yes of course_ all the other guys contributed in their important ways to the overall sound, but I think they all understood that, by letting Chris dominate their sound the way he was inclined to, by "letting Chris be Chris", they were creating something special and wonderful when they used their talent to fill in around it.
    *_Chris Squire_* . . . the bassist I've praised and admired the most since the day I first heard Starship Trooper on the radio.

      If you get the right settings on a Rickenbacker 4003, it has that delightful little "growl" on the 'E' and 'A' strings, and just an overall nice, punchy tone, and that bridge pickup adding some twang and high-end. Rickenbacker makes some great guitars and basses. The Sound of the 60s and 70s.

    THIS is the lineup of Yes that made the band rich and famous. Amazing to have this rare video of them at work - including of course their great producer/engineer Eddie Offord. Bill Bruford is at his best here; clearly he is a major player in the creative force of Yes. His jazz sensibilities, his distaste for BS were a perfect foil to the creative geniuses of the other four musicians. Think of how different their three great albums - The Yes Album, Fragile and Close To The Edge - were from each other, and yet all were an ascending triumph of creativity. Bill thought that after CTTE the band could only do "son of" CTTE. They had achieved the summit; it would no longer be interesting for Bill, so he left. BUT IMAGINE IF BILL HAD STAYED! Try to imagine Tales with Bill on drums! OMG!
