    I bought a similar set up but all grain no extract. I watched the video on the box before I started, and it tasted amazing. It's really hard to screw this up or any beer for that matter as long as you follow the directions. Keep it clean and don't rush things nature has to take it's course. Remember if you can make oatmeal or mac & cheese then you can make beer. Cheers.

    I followed the video instructions and now I’m a little nervous I’m currently boil stage and found the paper instructions . Paper says when steeping the pot of water should be turned on to medium while steeping for 20 minutes.. which in the video it didn’t say that. Hopefully it will still have good flavor. Also make sure you put the 7g hops in the first 30min and then the 3.5 in the last 15 min of boil

    Nice idea. I'd love to have an ingredients only kit though, I have plenty of 1 gallon jugs, and all the other hardware. Maybe keep in the cleaner and the cap for the jug.

    So the fermentation stage...he said to leave the fermenter there for 7 to 10 days and then he said the fermentation stage takes 2 weeks. So which is it, 7 to 10 days or 2 weeks? Maybe I missed something.

      Honestly, time is very flexible. The important thing is to make sure the fermentation is complete both visually (no more bubbles in airlock or foam on top of beer in fermenter) and by numbers (taking gravity readings until they are constant for a few days in a row) and the beer is allowed to rest for a few days to condition and clear a bit before moving onto bottling or kegging. Depending on the beer, yeast, and fermentation temperature this is generally takes 1-2 weeks. It's always good to plan for a two-week process just in case things go slower than you expect.

    Hi all. Just bought this item. Looking forward to getting started! Quick question - in this vid you used a 45 min boil. What would happen if you took it to a 60 min boil?

      You can use any sort of burner - gas, electric or induction.

    Whenever I put the wart into the fermentor I don’t have a gallon I have a lot less than a gallon? Can I add water to the watt to get it to the one gallon mark?

      Yes, you would "top off" the fermenter with clean water (tap if good, or bottled) to one gallon and then pitch yeast.

      Greg Palafos you can bud, you can even find recipes online and practice them till you feel good enough to make your own recipes. I would suggest buying the book how to brew by John Palmer. Good luck!

    At the 10:00 mark when they transfered the cleanser from the glass jug into the metal jug, why didn't they just pour it? Why the whole siphoning procedure? Was it to clean the siphoner, tube, etc?

      You could certainly pour it directly into the jug, but we did that to help clean it. You could also just sanitize the siphon separately with something like Star San before use. Cheers!

      Is there a specific reason you need to sit longer? Theoretically you could go longer but there is a chance yeast can start doing some things that off-flavors if the beer sits on it too long after fermentation is complete. I wouldn't let it sit for a month or so. Unless you are cold-crashing it so the yeast is dormant.

      I would say yes. Replace drinking with a hobby like fishing or walking are good alternatives.

      Sometimes it takes a few days to get more amount of foam (krausen) on the beer. Are you seeing bubbles in the airlock yet?

    I just bottled a small batch and it only yielded 7 bottles. Is that normal?

      12 ounce bottles? You should theoretcially be able to get a few more out of it, but if you sacrifice some beer in order to make sure you don't pull any sediment from the bottome of the fermenter into the bottle that might cost you a bottle or two. Or if you're end-of-boil volume was a bit lower than one gallon, that would obviously affect it as well. Does this help?

      @@NorthernBrewerTV after pouring the beer into the fermenter I did as the instructions said and filled to the gallon mark with water and when done the krausen wasn't that high but I might have left a bottles worth in the fermenter because I was bottling by myself(was about 2am) and the last bottle was tricky. But we'll see how this goes. Today is week 2 after bottling and am going to put 1 bottle in the fridge to get cold hopefully to drink later tonight.

    It's a real shame that Northern Brewer themselves don't answer these questions. I have my own and seen a few legitimate questions that they should answer, and would if the really cared. It is sad that I spent money on this and know my outcome will be bad because I they don't answer questions on thier own videos.

    the pump didnt work and i ended up having to syphon it out with my mouth seriously pissed off pretty sure the beers going to be bad now to - would not buy

      Completely agree with you. I thought I was doing something wrong because the syphon wasn't syphoning, just pumping the beer back and forth, likely due to imperfect seal. Northern Brewer needs to improve this in their kits.

    The only problem I had at creating my own one gallon recipe after we tried doing these brewing kits, is that no one tells you how much yeast is in those packets. If you are wanting to create your own recipe, make sure you weigh the yeast on a food scale before hand to make sure you know how much yeast you were provided. It's a real hassle down the line if you are interested in making your own recipe and you don't know how much yeast you need for one gallon brew (most recipes tell you what type of yeast they use not how much).

      Honestly pitch rate is pretty flexible. The way dry yeast is normally sold, one packet basically works for 5 gallons of a normal gravity batch. With a 1 gallon batch, that is a pretty high pitch rate, so you can add something like half the packet and just discard the rest (unless you're brewing something else within maybe an hour or something).

To be economical, I'm wanting to buy a 5 gallon recipe, but only use 1/5 of the ingredients for each one gallon brew (brewing maybe a gallon every two weeks or so). You're saying the unused yeast would need to be discarded, unless immediately used, but would that also apply to the other ingredients once the packets have been opened or exposed to air? Thanks for any tips you may have on this!

      @@stevegunn9971 Yeast needs to be discarded pretty quickly once opened. Grain lasts ages if unmilled and is still fine for at least a month milled. I think the same is true of dry malt extract. Not sure about liquid malt extract here. Hops can be stored in open containers in the freezer for at least a month, but they are much better fresh.

      That's why it's called a starter kit. Once a person feels more comfortable with the process they move up to a larger kit

    Isnt that bottle to small? Fermentation will produce alot of foam and that dosnt seem like it has space for it.

      I've brewed using this kit only 2 times, the first time my wort didnt reach the 1 gal mark so there was a lot of head space; didn't need a blow off hose (that batch ended up being really strong)
      The second time I added enough water to reach 1 gal so I used a blowoff hose for the first week but I didn't even need to because nothing came up into the hose at all

      It is small. US gallon not the same as imperial gallon. 5 gallon imperial is 6 gallon US.A pint US must be smaller than UK. Correct me if im wrong
