Just making Master Chief in any rate in the navy is challenging but doing it while diving which is one of the most physically and mentally challenging jobs is legendary.

This movie is a great dipiction of the hatred the United States/Military has for a particular skin color. I do not the systemic racism and the discrimination imposed by the leader in the Navy could not have been protrayed any better. As a combat veteran, this film reminds of my time serving. The hate is REAL

As an ex-Sailor who served aboard the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) & USS Nimitz (CVN-68), I'm proud to have served in the U.S. Navy Branch of Service as the great Master Diver Carl Brashear. What an honor.
My father was stationed aboard the same ship as Carl Brashear and that was the USS Hunley (AS-31). What a small world.
In conclusion, I never get tired of watching the movie based on Carl Brashear "Men of Honor". It's such a classic because it resonates with people due to the fact that it's fact based and real.

My great-uncle flew F-4s off the Kitty Hawk. Dave 'Calhoun' West, such a cool guy even to this day! My cousin used to fly F-18s back in the early 00s as well.
Another fun example of a small world, I guess!

Very, very few people get to know first hand how military diving is not for the faint hearted and demands a cool head when you're deep, deep down and things go wrong but still complete the task - and look after your buddies.
Carl Brashear was one of the few and well worthy of the Master Diver qualification.
    Hero and Gentleman.

Died in November 2018, at 91 years old, the native Alberto José do Nascimento, pioneer of diving in Brazil, who together with Luiz Oliveira, was part of the 1954 class of the US Navy.
The gang that was immortalized by the movie Men of Honor, which tells the story of Carl Brashear, the first black diver in the USA. In 2016 the book Operation Mergulho was launched in Brazil, which tells the story of Alberto and Luiz when they studied diving in the Brashear class.
Alberto's Legacy will never be forgotten, his story makes him more than a diver, makes him a true legend.
The text below is from a report in the newspaper A Tribuna by journalist Itaercio Porpino, published in 2004, which tells a little about the story of our hero unknown to the vast majority of the public
Anyone who has seen the 2000 film "Men of Honor" knows that that story is based on real events: in the life of the first black man (Carl Brashear) to become a US Navy rescue diver in the early 1950s. that nobody has any idea is that a native of Natal has lived most of those episodes. In fact, at the rescue diving school, he was the only one to approach and become friends with Carl, when all the American white aspirants harassed and even chased him.
In the film, Nataliano Alberto José do Nascimento - now 77 years old - would be the only aspirant who, right in the first scenes of the diving school, remains in the accommodation after the entrance of Brashear, while all the others leave, feeling offended and saying that “they don't share the same space with a black person”. However, no reference is made to the presence of Brazilians in the class. The character representing the potiguar was replaced by an American stutterer.
“I was the one who stayed in the room, so that guy from the movie is representing me. Now, that stutter, everything else that happens to the character is fantasy. A guy like him would never go to an elite school like that. Only the best entered there ”, he says.
Alberto says that it was he who participated with Carl Brashear in the rescue of a colleague trapped under the sea. In fact, Natalense received all the merits when the greatest participation in the feat was the black sailor. The film portrays this episode, but the aspirant who was helping Brashear, in fiction, was another, who even ended up running away. Still, he was awarded a medal of honor
"There was this rescue, but it didn't happen like that. There was no medal and neither was an American who participated in the operation, but me. As in the film, Brashear was very angry at the injustice," recalls the ex-diver
Natalense unaware of episode of dispute with the commander
Alberto says he is unaware of the episode in which Brashear defeated the commander, in front of the other aspirants, in a dispute to see who had the longest time submerged in the water. “I find it difficult to have happened, because the film shows that the episode took place in a bar, with everyone together. “The Americans did not stay in the same space as Brashear or speak to him. Once we made an allotment for a party and they didn't let him participate. Racial segregation was very strong in the United States at that time. On buses, blacks could only go in the back. Back at the Navy school, the Americans referred to him as a black son of a p. ”.
For Alberto José do Nascimento, the film portrays Brashear's determination to become a diver in the American Navy. The technical part (equipment and situations experienced in that type of environment) is impeccable, according to him.
However, he witnessed the episode of the school's final test. In order to be approved as a rescue diver, the aspirants had to assemble, in the shortest possible time, several small tools (screws, nuts, alleys) in a larger piece thrown to the bottom of the sea. The detail is that the bags with the tools of all the whites were thrown closed. Brashear's was torn and its pieces scattered on the ocean floor so that he would not complete the test. "It happened that way in the film: he stayed for more than nine hours under water, almost froze, but only went up with the piece assembled".
Former Natalian sailor Alberto José do Nascimento has a lot of history to tell. And it's not a fisherman's conversation, it's really a diver.
He retired at the age of 39 and, with the money he collected, opened a rescue firm on the high seas in Rio de Janeiro, where he lived for 40 years. He even had three ships, but he left his business sinking due to poor management. “I sold the ships on loan and lost everything. Today I live on retirement ”, he says, but without regret. Along with Brashear, in the United States, Alberto and all the others were nothing more than supporting actors, but he guarantees that he was one of the top ten in the class, approved with a 75% success rate. "In the course I was always at the top, and in Brazil I don't know of anyone who has made more rescues than me".
To join class 56 of the American Navy rescue diving school - considered the best in the world - Alberto had to undergo a rigorous selection, competing with several Brazilian sailors. Only he and another passed.

Carl Brashear is the reason I am alive today, I was told as a white male I would never succeed regardless how many degrees, well I will be 47 this year and still with no degree busting everything that walks out college now
If people learn to educate themselves after given the tools to work with, no degree will ever be needed because ya work and the people speak for ya, so Thank you Carl for showing me hard work does pay off and keeps the heart honest

In 1915 John Henry Turpin worked as a diver in efforts to raise the sunken submarine USS F-4 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He became qualified as a "Master Diver" - most probably the first African-American sailor to do so. (It is often erroneously reported that Master Chief Petty Officer Carl Brashear held this honor.)
