This was a very well said video. You hit it right on the nail, and the honest truth is that no, because of the fact that I do not do reviews and have never touched on ingredients on my channel, I did not even think to touch on the risks in my video, nor did I know about them because I don't have sensitive skin and have always just used palettes put in front of me with no issue. I definitely agree that I should have mentioned it and warned people with sensitive eyelids of the staining. I released this palette with fellow makeup artists in mind to see what looks they could create, so I assumed staining was common knowledge, but your point about my diverse audience definitely is true. That being said, customers should know whether or not they have sensitive skin, what their allergies are, and do their proper research on a product before buying it. Kodee said in her livestream that she gets hives ALL of the time and in the replies to her tweet of people suggesting solutions to get rid of the staining, she was allergic to practically everything being suggested. It is not a brand nor a person's responsibility to give every single disclaimer, or everyone would be sitting on camera for hours on end. I would have apologized to Kodee for her experience if it weren't expressed in a 2 minute video screaming, and her in the replies of the tweet telling people that I don't care about my fans, all before I even had the chance to publicly respond. I am a firm believer in treating people the way you want to be treated and the expectation of influencers to act as feelingless robots and take whatever is thrown at them while still smiling is crazy, we are human beings too. I wish Kodee the best and hope she is okay, and thank you Jen for expressing your thoughts on this manner in a respectful way.
Tanner Chuntoth I replied back and told her to consult a dermatologist which is what anyone should do when having a skin issue. People shouldn’t expect to be met with a smile and excess kindness no matter how obnoxious and rude they’re being. 🤷🏻♀️
The thing is, that unlike Jeffree & Manny, this palette is *not* actually James' product - it's Morphe's. Jeffree owns his line, manages, develops, markets his products & is ultimately responsible for it. So far it seems that this is the same direction Manny is headed. James Charles "collaborated" with his....at the heart of it all, this is a (highly effective) marketing plan and nothing more. The rest is Morphe's responsibility. If your favourite actor was in an ad campaign for a car you purchased, you wouldn't hold the actor responsible if that car's brakes failed. An over simplification, but that is the heart of it. I've heard a bunch of complaints directed James, I've seen him respond, but I've yet to hear the tirade against Morphe. (Is it me, or does it have the hint Morphe hanging another influencer out to take the heat for them?) I have very few personal feelings about any of the 3 fellows; I'm not defending any of them, it's just my (long winded) thoughts.
Well said, this happened with the Jacklyn vault too where Morphe let Jacklyn take the heat. Like you said both Jeffree and Manny own their brand so it is their responsibility to release this information not James'.
His name is on the palette. He claims that he worked "closely" with Morphe to "develop" all the shadows in the palette. He is promoting it and talking about it's content to his audience. He is just as responsible as Morphe for giving consumers the correct information. I suspect that he is ignorant of what pigments are and the fact that they are not FDA approved for eye use. However, that does not excuse him. It is his responsibility to know the ins and outs of the product that bears his name. He should properly educate himself so that he can properly educate the consumer. Also, Morphe should spell this out on the back of the palette, not with just an eye in a circle with a slash across it. Just my thoughts.
His name is on it and he says he worked with Morphe on the formula so unless he's liying then he has some responsibility. Although I do think morphe need to step up about this as well it shouldn't be all on James
I don't know a single celeb that helped design a car they then advertised, so I think those scenarios aren't really comparable. It is true that it would better if morphe would handle all that stuff since they have experience and people who won't take complaints as personal attacks. They are definitely using a 19-yo as marketing sign and meatshield at the same time. I don't get why his manager isn't protecting him better, tbh..
I couldn't agree with you more. In my opinion Morphe has a history of letting the collaborator take the heat for formulas MORPHE created. James developed the colors and gave his seal of approval for all the finalized shades and formulas, but based on how they performed... Not based on ingredients. That's Morphes gig. They let Jaclyn take a ration of crap for the RElaunch of the vault also. To the consumer it didn't seem there was ANY difference between the flawed first launch and the "reformulation" of the second LAUNCH. Jaclyn is still suffering the hit to her brand because of that. I love James 'palette, so I have nothing bad to say about it, but I DO feel that Morphe needs to stand by their collaborators better and step up to the plate and comment themselves when stuff like this happens. James is an 18 year old kid, of COURSE his responses are going to be off the cuff, emotionally charged, and a bit immature... HE'S A DAMN TEENAGER!! All I gotta say is he's got his ish together FAR more than I did at 18 and I am in his cheering section the whole way. I can't wait to see what he becomes!! ❤
Like I was saying on twitter, not everyone understands the difference. He himself said in his video that he didn't even know there was a difference between pressed pigments and a typical eyeshadow until he started working w/morphe on formulations. If he didn't know, how can anyone including him assume that the regular consumer knows?
Exactly! He's being a hypocrite at this point. He himself said he didn't know the difference then goes on to tell someone who got HIVES on their EYES that it is COMMON KNOWLEDGE when not long before he DIDN'T KNOW the difference. 🙄
Maura McBride if you’re gonna wear makeup again then just cover it up with more makeup once you’re gonna use it again. I don’t see the problem with it, it’s like wearing red lipstick and not expecting it to stain!
James said “I never once called this an eyeshadow palette “....Jen, minute 3:56 in his launch video he calls it an eyeshadow palette. You are being too kind Jen.
Sara Fox James seriously doesn’t remember all his lies and words, he will twist and spit out whatever in the moment that will save his ass. He’s a fraud.
My issue with james' response is that if i spoke to an irate customer at my job the way he did to her, I'd be fired or reprimanded severely. In the customer service industry, customers can talk all kinds of nonsense and you have to remain professional. Even in corporate America, we always have to maintain a level of professionalism. Im assuming he's severely out of touch with how the common folk every day worker has to deal with criticism at their job. It's real life situations that we all deal with and have to overcome professionally or else it could cost us our livelihood.
its ya girl liz I agree that gurus should be more respectful even though they are human they are still marketing them self and building a business and they are the face of the business. On the other side of things tho... it isn’t his palette, it’s morphe’s palette. His video was advertising it, not supposed to be a disclose all on the palette. You can find that info online. He shouldn’t have been blamed in that way, she should’ve talked to customer service. He isn’t part of their business, he’s just an avenue for marketing.
I've been in customer service, and you're correct. However, she didn't come at this from a customer service perspective. This would be the equivalent of someone coming up to you on the street and yelling that you poisoned them intentionally. Still going to politely apologize then? I have almost infinite patience... the way she delivered her problems was beyond unprofessional. The fact that she got an unprofessional response is not surprising to me. I would have more sympathy here if she hadn't made it seem like he was trying to kill people on purpose when it simply stained her eyes and (maybe?) caused a hive. How you treat others is going to dictate how you get treated. Just because customer service agents get treated like crap and have to smile while that happens does not make it right. I would imagine you would agree with that. I've had to smile through some of the most awful stuff, but she didn't contact Morphe's customer service. She made a ridiculous video that was not leveling a complaint. She wanted to make a ridiculous video like all her other ones. And that's fine. But don't expect a customer service response when you don't approach customer service. I doubt she would have called Morphe and screamed that stuff into the phone.
I'm confused a few weeks ago he was raving how much of an expert he was even more so than Marlena Stell from Makeup Geek and that's why he wanted the documentary on Netflix. So " recently he learned about press pigment and formulation". So is he a makeup expert or not? Jen love your news and reviews you are awesome
Johnathan Glez He is. He's an 18 year old kid who obviously knows everything there is to know about make up. He has nothing left to learn and is obviously very humble.
He’s been making the palette for probably over a year so the a few weeks ago statement doesn’t hold up. He’s obviously not an expert but he’s experienced. Regardless, make up geek lady’s response was condescending and she’s clearly not an expert because if she was her makeup wouldn’t suck
Johnathan Glez YES! He threw that entire tantrum on twitter saying really disrespectful and just rude things to and about Marlena. She was one of the earlier people on YT doing makeup and paved the way for people like James! She also built her own company from the ground up and has 10+ years in the industry and for him to downplay her accomplishments the way he did was gross.
Kodee did not act like a customer who wanted to resolve a complaint, she was literally SCREAMING in her video. She was acting like someone who wanted something for free: absolutely unreasonable. I work in the restaurant industry and I’ve worked in retail, if that was a customer in a store she would have been asked to leave. And maybe that’s why I feel a certain type of way about her video and her Twitter nonsense. I don’t know why people think it’s ok for them to act horrible on the internet and when someone reacts a certain way they want to play the victim. James could have absolutely handled the situation better, but that doesn’t mean she had the right to flat out attack him before giving him the benefit of the doubt. She could have privately messaged him first, she CHOSE not to do that. Her goal was to attack and to embarrass him, and I’m going to say it: CLOUT. I’m not stanning James at all, but her behavior was incredibly disgusting. Just because that what she “does,” doesn’t make it right.
yes dude !! i worked in retail too and trust me if you start screaming like this you will NOT get your way, you will be asked to leave. But if you come to someone in a Respectful and Mature way they will try to help you resolve your issue.
Now that I’m reading this I feel like that’s why I don’t feel bad for her and understand why James responded the way he did because I have had to deal with so many people like this while working in retail and restaurants. Like I feel like they do it to make a scene and embarrass someone. But also I agree James could’ve done things better but really truly agree with you!
It's obvious none of you are in high management. Ask them to leave, and yea it may settle the issue in the lower ranks (the retail store location you're employed at) but an issue like this could lead to corporate offices and the CEO of the company lol issues don't just end when you ask someone to leave...especially when they have a valid point to be pissed off. Yea it sucks when ppl yell at you but y'all are really just the worker bees for large corporations who would reimburse the customer as well as let you go in a heart beat... *shrugs* James handled the situation terribly. Hopefully he can learn from it.
Reds/pink shadows are made with VERY strong pigment which can cause staining. Morphed should have released a statement warning customers. Many brands in the past have with such colors.
This is why social media beauty icons, youtubers, etc should be careful about how they say (on video) "I helped formulate, I created a formula, I talked to the chemists" etc. They can be held responsible for dissatisfaction/reaction due to inaccurate/omitted information or assumption. Also, they cannot pull the "I didn't know" card. If they claim to partake in formulating, they need to have a pretty good understanding (extensive/simple enough for public) of the chemistry/ingredients of their product. With better knowledge, they can present products better and answer questions/comments better without confusion and defensiveness.
*AMEN!* They always say how involved they are and blah blah. Then something bad happens and all of the sudden "hey guys I don't know about this, I wasn't responsible or involved with all of this, my participation was very low. Blah blah blah". So which is it, sis?!?!?!
I feel like Kodee overreacted. Honestly unlike Jeffree Starr and Manny, James is doing a collaboration with Morphe he doesn’t own the company. They would have much more knowledge on the legalities and would carry the responsibility of warning customers of all the issues. People sometimes develop allergies out of the blue, what may have been ok in the past to use may not always work the same. I know with myself, in recent years I developed excema on my eyelids. Now I need to be super careful what I use. That was never the case in the past. If you know you have sensitivity to anything you should be more aware of what you use. It’s called being a grownup and looking out for your own best interests.
I can't comment on James's comment sadly so here goes... 'Kodee' is not a normal consumer, she is a rant channel. She is allegedly massively sensitive to almost everything except loud noises..which is a shame...lf l were a cynic l would say that she planned this, knowing how allergic she is.However, perhaps she only capitalised on the situation *AFTER* SHE USED A BOX OF CHEMICALS on HER EYES *WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE PACKAGING*..... I do hope that all the revenue (and publicity & everything else that she gained) this has generated for her has been adequate compensation for her 'pain & suffering'... Who the hell has as many sensitivities as she allegedly does & doesn't SCOUR not just packaging but every other source of information off their own back?! I have allergies & sensitivities & my first thought if l mess up is why the eff didn't l check more carefully because I'm an ADULT & l take accountability for my actions instead of blaming the nearest cat on a windowsill or a tree and because blame culture is effing PATHETIC.Is it so you can sue?!WTF?! Why does it matter so much.A mistake happened, move on.I personally don't want or need;freebies,to win compensation or an apology.l am not GREEDY.lt's a disgusting thing that's ruining people's character and by extension society.Sorrynotsorry.
A very risky mistake and you guys aren't even considering her situation what happen if something like this happened to you. You honestly would be like Elsa singing let it go to yourself?? I'm pretty sure you care too much about your image because for one you are an obvious make up user that mayne uses full face to cover all your imperfections because you aren't satisfied with what your parents made you with. So it's really sad that th all attack her instead of a very irresponsible company Morphe and a super ignorant promoter that feels he is too high and mighty to disclose any FDA WARNINGS because everyone should subconsciously know about pressed pigments?? I have never known or heard of this till I saw this video today so i just be part of those people as well that should have automatically know the dangers and FDA warnings?? I only.go for cruelty free products because they won't have harsh chemicals and i feel that animals should only be eaten not wasted on stupid tests for makeup. Make makeup junkies be test subjects instead. But surprisingly Morphe only just started to stop testing on animals of May this year so. . . That's why I don't care of them and that's why their products can cause harm to people. So you step back and look at the super star who is stupid enough not to know either that DISCLOSURES AND DAD WARNINGS ARE THE LAW AND A MUST WHEN PROMOTING A PRODUCT!! Shit she even have samples of other promoters making 100% sure the full disclose all FDA warnings and regulations. Idiot
Not everyone is social media literate which is why IT IS NOT THE LAW TO PUT FDA (or equivalent in the rest of the world ) WARNINGS ON SOCIAL MEDIA (LAUGHING MY ASS OFF). What kind of idiot who is old enough to have money of their own to spend unsupervised does not look at the packaging ESPECIALLY if they have even remotely sensitive skin!!!it is the bodies largest organ. It is not anyone else's fault if you are stupid and do not THINK. OOH I SHOULDN'T EAT CRAYONS.."BUT THEY LOOK SO PURTY,LIKE FRUUUIIIT"."IMMA SUEEEEEE". READ THE PACKAGING ON THINGS THAT YOU BUY. THEY AINT XMAS DECORATIONS.
Thank you for a calm, logical and informative video. My issue with James is that he basically said that he was in a lab for 12 hours a day formulating this pallet. He always comes across as so entitled. It is not common knowledge that some pigments are not FDA approved for eye use. James has not created anything groundbreaking or original, contrary to what he says. Sugarpill has made a matte red that is vegan for years is one of the best, most true red shades produced. James cannot dismiss his customers so easily and be successful. While the woman in the video was a little over the top, her concerns were legitimate.
This!! It was a bit irresponsible for him to make claims about his Palette when Sugarpill, Coloured Raine and B Perfect have done the same thing and for a long time. So it shows his lack of knowledge and research about his competitors. It also proves that he did probably embellish how much work he put into it it or better yet how much information he didn't know or even think to ask. I think he went into this thinking it was a great business deal from him and made something that he wanted but he forgot about the important aspects that go along with that like looking at ingredients, warnings, other products on the market and backlash (like every brand ever has). He has a lot to learn sadly but I think he will get there x
The thing is, though, he said he was "surprised" Morphe was able to match his "concept" in the photo he sent Linda... Why would anyone be "surprised" about something like that if they were actually in the lab, working on it...?
I am 39 and come across many entitled people James age as well as my own. And I can say that James is not entitled. If anything he is a breath of fresh air. He appears to be a very genuine and good hearted person. Things get missed. We are all only human. I doubt very much that he was out to hurt anyone in anyway.
I'm so glad you used the term "gaslighting" because that's exactly the word I was looking for. When I read his response it left me with an awful feeling. He handled that poorly and insensitively.
I watch a lot of makeup videos and I still didn’t know pressed pigments stain the eyes!!! That’s because no one ever friggin mentions it when reviewing these type of shadows!! So go figure!!
It's not about pressed pigments, it's about red dye that is vegan. Maybe you don't watch cruelty free and vegan channels, but if you did you would 100% know that.
Even if I know, not everyone knows. I think that if you are trying to do a collab you need to test the palette. This seemed that he didnt test anything. I know the palette is for morphe, so they should have said that, but when the release is in your Channel, you should say It. Yes, it is on the eyeshadow box, so do I need to buy the palette and then read that????
He said he didn't know what a pressed pigment was until recently, and that CERTAIN SKIN TYPES STAINING is common knowledge. Don't go throwing sh!t on people when you don't even have correct info.
BryceSim11 That is definitely part of it. Had this been just another palette with no one’s name but Morphe on it (the same goes for all the JH drama) I don’t think people would have reacted in the same way. Either way, still drama though. They can’t seem to escape from it.
Rachel Lovins Yes. People certainly need to do their own research and read labels and use common sense instead of waiting for a TH-camr to tell them every possible detail. Just so much unnecessary drama!
Well said, Jen! I agree there should have been a more clear warning about the pressed pigments not legally being eye safe because it’s not common knowledge for the average consumer.
k leung even with that symbol though, it really should have a written disclaimer along with it specifying why it’s not eye safe / what the consequences may be if consumers choose to use it on the direct eye area anyway (or do so accidentally)
@@NatalieMarie917 i totally agree, but legal wise they complied with fda rules as a symbol counts as a warning too? So they are legal wise covered i guess?
I'm a nurse and I didn't know pigments could stain either but I wouldn't blame James, his roll is as a creative designer not a chemical engineer! If there not safe the company should say no to the artist and why. James is young and may not have years of experience as a chemist but clearly he has a good heart and is an artist. Too many people these days don't take their share of the blame, did she do a patch test?? no none of us do lol but its not the artists fault.
Come on, that person’s video was a giant overreaction, calling James a liar and a fake because he didn’t tell people. She should have reached out to him before screaming about it in a video. As a makeup user, I personally know that bright, pigmented colours have a tendency to stain your eyes. On the back of the packaging it has the ‘not eye safe’ symbol, but really what that’s saying is that legally they can’t endorse you putting it on your eyes. I use them on my eyes all the time. Some people can have a reaction to the red dye, it’s unfortunate. She needs to see a dermatologist and grow up. Yes, it sucks. There are other ways she could have handled it.
sophie RenLeb I always read the disclaimer it’s there for a reason.... if there is a disclaimer It’s because something may happen so if you wanna make all this noise about how it stained you then MAYYYYBEEEEE you should read the disclaimer
Angie Rentmeester honestly the only ones from morphe I’ve liked are the Jaclyn Hill palettes. Seems like if I wait till 3 releases (lol!) they’re great!
I don’t know why people are so shocked about staining. Seriously you eat colored foods that stain what would make a pressed PIGMENT any different? Red lollipops leave your lips red, blue raspberry anything stains etc. And if you are going to spend coin on a pallet you should look into it, I understand james should’ve said something but people have to understand he’s never said anything similar to that about any product review before. And if people would actually read packaging they could prevent these types of situations. Tbh idk why he’s the only one getting heat, god forbid common knowledge is ignored and anyone who’s ever used a pink eyeshadow before not tell kodee. If she was really a make up lover and actually played around with make up she would know this. Deep and bright colored lipsticks stain but nobody is here complaining like damn sorry hun but that’s how pigment WORKS.
He even explained the stain situation in his videos these people are just stupid, if you can't do makeup don't buy it,if u dont want a (stain as he mentioned) dont buy it, you get what you ask, pigment eyeshadow its perfect the way it is, and not gonan lie, the old woman sounds like a whiny bish. She wont get her way by yelling
hey quick question because you guys seem to know a lot about make up and I'm conflicted. I don't wear make up at all but I am a creative person and do experiment with make up for fun. I got a cheap ass China pallette for that but I regret it so much because it's the worst quality ever. SO, my question: should I buy this pallette? I love the colours but I am afraid of staining, are there other options that don't stain or is it just about taking the risk because all of them will have the same chance of staining? 🖤
I honestly agree with James. I have sensitive eyes. I was never warned about the urban decay electric palette, I experienced the stains and I was fine with it. I never even saw Jeffree’s video about the blood sugar palette but still experienced stains and I was fine with that also. It’s up to you to know if you have an allergy. I do, I’m cool with the stains, I don’t experience contact dermatitis if it doesn’t have carmine in it. I found this all out myself, I don’t go around dragging Tarte and Too Faced because I’m allergic to their shadows most of the time.
Ok, so here is where I want to chime in....as someone that has severe skin allergies as well as food allergies, the FIRST thing you do with ANY product is a patch test! It doesn't matter if it is makeup, lotion, serums or whatever! To put up a video and say the James Charles palette caused an allergic reaction is crazy, do your own homework before you purchase! The palette is on display at Ulta for customers to swatch. Swatch the colors, walk around and a bit and see how it reacts on your skin. James nor Morphe is responsible for how every single customers skin will react. When is the consumer going to start taking responsibility for their actions and stop blaming others for everything that goes wrong with them?
If a customer doesn't have easy access to a physical store, how would they do a patch test? Spend the money, then lose out on it? Easy way to lose customer loyalty and generate bad word of mouth. Would have been easier to do what Jefree and Manny did and take a few seconds.
I don't know... I feel like in this specific case the girl's host of allergies and a pallet with this many shades... There was no way this was going to work out. I honestly feel a little bad for James (I don't follow him and idk much about him but) it seems like there's been a lot of unnecessary drama bc someone had a reaction to something in makeup, which has happened to me before and isn't a big deal. It's not like she tried to get a refund and couldn't, girl's still going to use the pallet she just made a huge fuss about it
Yes totally agree! I am allergic to coconut and coconut oils I have to always read the back of new products I use sometimes if coconut oil is in the last of the ingredients sometimes it’s ok to use but for liquids I will ask for a sample to take home bez sometimes I have to use it 2-3 times before getting a reaction or rash with palettes I will go to the store 2-3 times that week and swatch the palette I want when the ingredients state coconut in it, so when that girl in the beginning stated she gets hives all the time she should have known better to do patch tests
@@whattwowhat Uhhh, maybe don't buy it then? No one said she had to have it. She could have waited, got a patch done, researched, documented any cases of peoples will allergies having a reaction to it, and then made a conscious decision. She wanted it. It's her risk to take if she is unwilling to commit to a patch test first.
MORPHE should be held responsible for not making James fully aware of the need to disclose any such information, and should call it out clearly on the packaging. James is a spokesperson, and he did the choosing of colors but Morphe formulated and sold these pigments. He’s not a scientist. He’s a cocky ridiculous kid with terrible manners and I don’t care for his content or his attitude, but unlike the Jeffrey and Manny palettes, these are still Morphe’s customers in the end... not James’. Morphe would be well served by stipulating disclosures and customer communication practices to their collaborators. In the end, I still can’t stand James, but he only knows what Morphe told him. If he intentionally withheld the information, that’s still on Morphe to contract with their spokespeople and verify their communication of that info.
Check 4:12 That's Sista sayn "WHEN I HAD THIS PALETTE IDEA, I WORKED WITH MORPHE VERY VERY CLOSELY TO FORMULATE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE SHADES" Not choosing shades, his IDEA, his FORMULA. He wanted in the Netflix Documentary cuz like Marlena he knows every aspect of the business, down to product development...
huntsman145 Just because he said he worked on the palete doesn't mean he actually did. Nikkietutorials' palette with Too Faced never got her final approval but she acted like it did until news came out. He could easily just be saying that so people think the palette is more genuine. And he can fake anything for the Netflix documentary.
@Nikki Of course he didn't. They presented him with a finished product and a paycheck. He didn't even read the disclaimer on the box or the ingredient lists. You can see him reading off cue cards when he talks about pressed pigments for god's sake. Just pointing out how he LIED about this every step of of the way. So letting him off the hook as a 'spokesperson' after he took credit for IDEA, DESIGN & FORMULA just tells the influencer community it's ok to lie to us
@@huntsman145 Just as I said in my comments on your previous post, I see your point 💯%. I do feel James over-inflated his actual input for the final product. Absolutely! Yes, he lied/prevaricated/misrepresented and misled people on that point. No argument from me! ☺ However, that is a contractual matter between him and Morphe™, at best, no matter how ill-used by, we, the customers/consumers, may feel about what James said/didn't say or do with the finished product. Let's break that down: CLAIM 1.) James said he had the original IDEA for this palette. FACT(s): I don't think this was a lie or misleading in any way. But an idea is just that, an idea; ie: a thought, a dream, a desire. It is NOT a physical, material object/product. "I can dream about (it)..." Is NOT the same as "I actually MADE this with my own two hands". CLAIM 2.) James said he "FORMULATED" the final product. FACT(S): This is a LIE. No matter HOW much time James may have spent at the lab during the creation and production of this palette, he was NOT one of the chemists who took the raw ingredients, performed the titrations of the liquid ingredients (oils, esters, water, etc.), formulated the ratios of dry ingredients to each other and with the liquid ingredients, performed the quality checks, etc. At BEST, he may have been given batch samples and had the ability to report his opinion on the product's performance, tactile impressions and give his opinion on colors/hues. (Maybe on the size/placement of pans as well as the packaging, too. No idea.) And, going back to claim #1, how did James Charles' "idea" get to Morphe™? What? Did he call them up one day and say, "Morphe™? I've got this sister-slay idea for a sister-palette of super-sister colors and shades for every sister to make their own sister-looks out of!" However... Somehow I don't think it quite went down that way. 🤓 Take care huntsman145 !! 💖☮
All respect, but that's easy to say when you're not going through it. I've had an allergic reaction from an eye shadow before and it is not pleasant at all. Her freaking out was understandable and I do sympathize with her.
Personally I think it's more on Morphe that it wasn't disclaimed as it should've been.. wasn't this his first palette? I think he did well with it and it's just a learning experience imo
I have to say that no matter how nerve-wrecking this probably was to prepare for a public audience, you are the most honest, thorough, and articulate makeup channel on TH-cam. You're naturally an incredible educator.
I absolutely agree!! And you can tell she is genuinely caring of peoples feelings, she truly is an amazing person and it shines through in everything she does!
The only thing common knowledge about this is he has a history of speaking without thinking. His response was beyond rude to her even if it were common knowledge. People tout this as great for beginners since the shade array is so big, so beginners wouldn’t have that knowledge even if it were common to average consumers.
It wasn't him who spoke first. If someone publically ridiculed you, called you a liar and accuses you of not caring about your audience? Let's all see how you'd react. Im not saying she had no right to be upset, but that delivery though. Ugh. 😏
Glam Ma it’s called customer service and millions do it everyday. I’ve gotten cussed out for asking a man if he wanted to donate a dollar to help starving children. I just said okay I’m sorry and moved on with my day. This is his product and people are going to him. Customers don’t always have to be nice especially when the product has caused them health issues and there were no warnings other than a small picture on the back with a eye crossed out. It’s James’ responsibility to be professional.
@@gabimarie4297 it's called common knowledge and common sense and sadly people don't use it. It's not any different than any other brand. Why is everyone making such a huge deal over it? Because they want to smear? Cause trouble? Create drama? Stir the proverbial pot of shit? I think so! Everyone is always complaining these days. #generationbutthurt
Having a teenager admit they are wrong & apologize is already difficult enough....but having a teenager who became famous pretty much overnight and is having millions of dollars thrown at them admit they are wrong is probably pretty much dang in possible lol
True. But that teenager is an adult who's selling a product for a company. He doesn't deserve a cent of those millions if he's incapable of controlling his outbursts toward customers. We can't expect customers to be professional; that's his job as Morphe's employee (in this case).
I am yet to use a pink eye shadow that hasn’t stained my eye lids, whether it be a drugstore or higher end brand they’ve all stained my eye lids and eventually fades away after a day or to👍🏼
I am 38 and I had no clue there was a difference between a eyeshadow palette and a pressed pigments. I have sensitive skin and I looked up the reviews on TH-cam and websites selling the product, I can not find anywhere the warning that they were not eye safe. I would not have even thought to look at the fine print on the box for a warning when with all the reviews are using this palette on the eyes. My concern is if I didn't know, would James audience have known that information? being a lot of younger people are watching. Morphe and James should have informed everyone of this issue so they could have made that decision of not purchasing the palette or not.
Jen have done another video about why this pigments are "no eye safe" is more like they have the stain quality, the FTA said that they're dye like... Hair dye, is nothing like that, those pigments are rated eye safe in the European Union
Katherine Burgess Agree...I’m 45yo and relatively new to wearing makeup, especially shadows. I experienced an eye irritation from the Laura Lee palette that was recently in a boxycharm box, but did not know why (now I know). I’ll stick with carmine shadows since I’m not vegan or cruelty free anyway. Libs ruin everything 🤷🏼♀️
Katherine Burgess Let's not forget that these are cheaply produced products from china. I wouldn't put any of those on my face, especially with sensitive skin.
i have just received my palette and i too have sensitive eyes it is fine of course more pigmented shadows may stain just like when you eat candy it may stain your mouth but you still eat it cause its good
So James claims he only just learned about the difference between pressed pigments and eyeshadows then puts her down saying its common knowledge to all beauty lovers 🤔
I think what he meant was colors that contain red to achieve that color stain is what is common knowledge. I kind of agree, when you have drinks like Hawaiian Punch you start getting a red mustache. When you make any red based Kool-aid if the powder gets on your fingers they turn red. Should he have put something on the packaging yes and not just for legal reasons, because there are a lot of people that don't know the difference between a pressed powder and eyeshadow and how the colors for both are achieved.
I agree. She needed to take some responsibility for not reading the box. However, he could have mentioned it - others did. Even if he thought only MUA's would use it, someone didn't tell him how wide his range is. So several places to see mistakes being made.
Fan of Jeffery or not you have to give credit where credit is due.... he’s a business man and knows his stuff. I sort of feel like Morphe has just moved on to a new influencer that is more naive and starting all over again. Awe I just don’t like what they seem to do.
Rach Williams what are you talking about, he’s doing what is legally required as Jen said several times through out the video. I also follow the law do I get credit? 😂 My God. Stop trying to make us like that man with zero actual reason. And he’s done this exact “non business” behaviour you’re insinuating James is doing too. Attacked people for criticizing his products or their palettes simply coming broken.
Artliker1234 I never said he hasn’t. All I said is that he knows his stuff when it comes to business and does what needs to be done. If your going to get your nose bent that far out of wack over giving credit where credit is due there’s something really wrong. Troll away... I won’t be returning to waist my time with any future comments from you. 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
I like that you will speak the truth and it doesn't matter if people like it or not. You are one of like 4 people I watch on youtube that I will buy something you recommend. People that will speak the truth, even if it means people won't like it, and they do it anyway, has my respect. Thanks for all you do.
This entire time I’ve been here like, “Girl, you’re always dramatic. You should have known the reds & pinks were going to stain your eye” but you are so right. We are not the everyday consumer & your video made so much sense. Thank you for this!
Can’t believe I just found you.... I love finding someone on TH-cam that cares about giving the FACTS of both sides of every situation, and encourages DISCUSSION rather than argumentation. New subscriber!
Jen, you are amazing beyond belief!! Your commentary is SPOT-ON, and the research and info you present for us is fabulous. Thank you for taking the time to help us educate ourselves to be informed, savvy consumers. Mad love to you AGAIN!!! Hope you and the fam have a very blessed Thanksgiving!!
I’m not going to lie. I disagree with you. Yes, his response was extremely unprofessional, but in his defense, morphe should be the one getting bashed for this. They are the ones that formulated the palette. Not James. It also might be just the batch of eyeshadow. My James Charles palette did not stain my eye or cause a reaction (the pigments) and I have pretty sensitive skin. Kodee was obviously being dramatic and attention-seeking in her video. She most likely just wanted controversy and attention because she was literally SCREAMING in her video. If she was really that angry about what the shadow did to her, she could either simply email or contact morphe and complain. Not publicly post an extremely harsh response. The reason Jeffree and Manny said something about theirs was because THATS THEIR OWN BRAND. James didn’t feel as though he needed to say that they stain because he figured people would’ve already known. Which most people don’t because some people purchasing this palette are beginners and wouldn’t know things like that. But the fact that she was so overdramatic and rude in her video is what made me so angry. Yes, James did do wrong by not saying anything about the staining, but he should not be the one being bashed for it. It’s morphe’s fault. not James.
I knew that colours that are incredibly pigmented can stain. If you're going to be using a rainbow palette for the rainbow shades and you don't know that rainbow colours can stain there's something wrong. And if you don't patch test when you know you get allergic reacts to a bunch of eyeshadow palettes, that's on you completely. That's like me buying a block of chocolate that has nuts in it when I have an allergic reaction to nuts, eating it, then getting furious at the company because of my mistake.
Agreed but not only that, hE DID SAY SOMETHING it was just more subtle and sence he talks fast most people wont notice, im mad cuz begginers buy the most expensive makeup and expect to be pros, you dont learn to blend and practice youll never be there, the Shadow wont work for you, you have to work it in yourselfs, dont buy makeup of you dont wanna put the effort to blend it all blending is done by the brush holder not the makeup. And she sound like a whiny old woman if you ask me.petty.
I feel like despite James's incessant need to portray and call himself a "professional"...we have to remember his age. It's normal to be reactionary and petty at 19. Hell, his brain isn't even fully developed yet lol so I'm not at all shocked by how poorly he handled this situation.
People need to stop using his age as an excuse for him. He wants to be an expert in make up and play with grown ups. He needs to act like one as well. He can be a “manager” and act out and blames others than things don’t go as smoothly at the same time.
Hugh Mangus Perhaps I should have clarified...I am in no way making excuses for him. I'm just simply saying, I'm not shocked by how he acted/reacted lol
Sometimes you can't teach experience to a certain level. You have to experience it and not just read about it. I agree with you that James had no experience with makeup formulation. He himself has no knowledge whatsoever before this. It's about being mature enough to take responsibility which James surely don't have in the way he responded to Cotee
I think he handled this situation horribly! If he ever wants to be taken seriously in the industry...he has a lot of work to do. Sadly his ego is so inflated, I doubt he's capable of that kind of self reflection.
I definitely remember the warning on the Electric palette! I think Morphe should have done better in this situation. There should be a proper written warning on the package (or there needs to be a symbol used across the board for this like the little pot with 12M or 6M on it). They should have also let James know that he should be stating these facts in his videos. I have a lot of allergies and my skin gets stained from a lot of stuff so I know to check for stuff that can irritate me (food, makeup, metal buttons on jeans....) but I have been dealing with this forever and I think some of his younger fans might not have the same amount of experience. I also think his response was inappropriate. When I used to work customer service, the main rule when someone was unhappy with a product or service was to first off apologize that they had a negative experience regardless of whether it was your fault or whether you are actually sorry. If you don't, people will get riled up because they're already upset and for whatever reason, if you don't say "oh I am sorry that happened" they take it to mean that you don't really care.
It is on the box, (via a little pic of an eye w/ a strike mark through it) BUT.... no one would know that unless/until they bought it AND hopefully looked at the tiny letters on the back. Which is why James should have mentioned they aren't considered 'eye safe' in one of his many videos, posts, snaps & promotions. It's a legal disclaimer Morphe should have insisted he make, imho. That said, regardless of her rude & over the top video... his response was so unprofessional, condescending, manipulative & rude, phew... unacceptable imho. ESP when he is the one who made the mistake of not only not mentioning it, BUT in several videos using those specific shades/pigments considered not eye-safe ON his eyes w/ zero disclaimers. Idk. Imho he is still deflecting in his response above.
Do find it quite interesting seems she has some product coming out on... 11/30 tho. smh Wonder if anyone can just do the right thing anymore. With integrity & using some form of a moral compass?! Disappointed in people more & more every day.
You're absolutely right (like usually :D)! Beauty influencers and makeup addicts will know about these kind of pressed pigments, the staining etc, but we are actually the minority of makeup consumers. Most of the people, especially young ones (and James Charles is followed mostly by them) probably don't know about this. The girl overreacted a little bit, but she is kind of right. James should've handled it more professionally, and being young is not a excuse in my opinion. If you decide to collab with a brand and formulate makeup, educate yourself and your consumers as well. Love ya Jen, you're the best :)
Jen, I think this was beautifully said . While James palette is gorgeous , he never fully explained what a pressed pigment is. He should have taken responsibility, being that it is HIS collab palette, instead of just dismissing her, regardless of how she came across.
NOTE: This video is NOT about how pigments stain. This video is about FDA regulation. And yes, James mentioned in a video posted LATER about the staining and the FDA regulations. That was AFTER this video was posted. Thank you.
Thanks Jen!! I’m one of those twitter friends that made you do it 😁😁 Overall I can see why kodee felt duped buuuuuut her rant was also a bit over the top. I feel like a reaction is always a risk with putting products on your face, especially the eye area.
This is the kind of content that I find so refreshing; you didn't yell and you didn't attack anyone. You were so fair and balanced that I hit subscribe! Keep reviewing the way you do, its this kind of fairness we need more of when watching influencers. :)
Morphe should have told James to make it clear! I believe this should be on thm! Yes its james's colab, but they are the actual makers and should know better! morphe seems to always forget to mention or make things clear!
Exactly. Morphe is the shittiest company when it comes to drama because they push it on the influencer. Like bitch- YOU’RE the makeup company, TF you at?!
kristie LovesJesus Not everyone watches youtube, some people who buy it may not even know who James is until then; maybe they just like the colors in the palette. If I buy a makeup palette, then I’m gonna take my personal responsibility to read on the ingredients and risks before I spend my money on it. I expect everyone else to do the same thing. If they can’t read a simple symbol on the packaging, then I’m not sure how you could help them. Morphe made it clear by putting that on the package. I’m not sure how much more clear you can get. It’s not James’ responsibility to know the allergies of EVERYONE who buys his palette.
Morphe didn’t make any response to Kodee which I felt was wrong. I congratulate James on his release but what I don’t like is if there’s a problem Morphe lets the influencer fight the battles. James is very young and hasn’t even hit the age of maturity yet so I’m not surprised when he acts like he does at times. He is young and reacts out of emotion. Now Kodee whom I do follow on twitter did go way over board with her rant. I find her funny but even I was like oh no this was a bit too much. He has a large fan base of very young people who will attack her and did. This is where Morphe should’ve stepped in but nope not a comment in sight. Morphe as a brand I personally like but as someone who backs their influencer when drama pops off I do not.
Neither morphe or James had an obligation to reply to this. Her videos were targeted towards James she neither morphe or James had an obligation to reply to this. Her videos were targeted towards James because he is the only one she knew she could get a reaction out of. Morphe is a company and they know they did no wrong it was on the package that pressed pigments are not meant for the eyes and you take that risk when you use the product. James had no obligation to apply to this girl or put in his video that pressed pigments weren't meant for the eyes it's on the package. You're right James is Young and he really should not have replied to this girl it wasn't his obligation.
I don’t care how young he is, he’s old enough to make thousands of dollars off people I’m pretty sure he’s old enough to issue a disclaimer that his eyeshadows aren’t fda approved for use on the eyes
Morphe as a brand seems to have an undercurrent of sleaze and weirdness about them- all the launches and the collabs seemed rushed and ill considered, and the brand itself does not seem to have a sense of voice or focus, other than make beaucomp bucks.
Ultimately regardless of the customer over the top reaction she still had a reaction to a product that did not have a clear disclaimer and the artist behind it made a huge point to make a vegan product and point out its vegan qualities and worked "closely" with the company to learn all about it and yet didn't know that it could cause skin irritation? Shame on the artist and shame on the company legally this does have potential to go places. Also the skin becomes more sensitive as you get older people gain and loose allergies over time you may never get hives for majority of your life and then suddenly get them this is why products that have a higher probability of causing reaction have disclaimers to test patch or warning labels. The fact that this product is known to stain and possibly cause irritation but was not verbally or written explained is faulty on both fronts. Yes as consumers we should read ingredients but companies have fail safes in the ingredients lists so that they don't have to list everything just research fragrances and cosmetics majority of those chemicals cause cancer if you actually get it tested so we as consumers can try however unless you spend tons of money to get everything tested even spot testing wont be enough. A good company and artist needs and must take responsibility and his response was fairly childish and showed more of a lack of support for the consumer than anything that came after. Its rather a shame because I do watch his content not religiously so even I didn't know that but enough and that was just a really uncalled for response the consumer had a right to be mad she spent money on something that ultimately proved to not be clear and ended up hurting her so yes over the top but her anger is valid and if she chooses to be over the top oh well shes not the one selling it but for him to respond like that....well he just earned another unsub and he will probably earn more vegan eye makeup or not.
HONESTLY and this is mainly to the folks who say he should do this and that and act this way. KEEP IN MIND he is the youngest beauty person out there he is only 16 maybe 17 by now and you CAN NOT expect someone so young to act so mature in such little time or visa versa this was his first pallet and he was proud there will be mistakes and nothing is perfect if anything she could have acted better by knowing she was most likely much older. We wonder why teens are so mad all the time and it’s because they are treated like children and expected to act like adults.
janine pannell LOL I don’t think so. He has owned up to being wrong about the way he handled that situation (and past situations) and is trying to do better. He was thrust into the limelight at a very young age and still hadn’t matured. But I do have a question - have you ever done something you were really proud of, just to have someone attack it? MOST people are going to get defensive and go on the attack. I’m not saying it’s right or the mature thing to do but we all have the “fight or flight” knee jerk reactions to things. It’s human nature.
yes thank you that is so real he is probably the youngest beauty gurru ( sorry don't know how to spell that) and he still released a makeup palette wake up people
LOVE how clearly and concisely you break everything down. You've made me a fan and I've subscribed to all of your social channels. Keep doing this amazing work! BTW - "He doesn't do ingredients on his channel"... But James did an entire video visiting the ColourPop lab and "learning" how makeup is created/manufactured. Claiming ignorance when there's a video which verifies you've been educated is disturbing.
Jen, I really appreciate your neutral style regarding issues like this. Critical thinking is a good thing but not everything needs to be over-dramatised.
My issue is with how James approached this person. I’ve been a customer service rep. If I owned a brand or had my NAME attached to a product, I would be even more careful with my interactions with consumers. This person has helped to line ur pocket, u can’t control how others treat u but u CAN be the bigger person in ur dealings with them.
Totally agree with you. James Charles is really the child he is. He keeps showing that time and time again. I wish he'd just go away. Thanks Jen. I'm done with this video cos his voice is so bothersome.
I am NOT A fan of James Charles, in fact he kind of creeps me out. But I will say that I think the answer is “buyer beware”. We all have the ability to do our own research, read the back of packages, etc. I don’t know how much we can feel entitled to be spoonfed information.
Yes, finally someone says it. If we have food allergies we read labels and make sure we don't eat these ingredients. Why wouldn't we do the same thing with products we put on our face? Everyone's going to react to a product differently, we can't keep companies responsible for our allergies or sensitivities. Everyone just needs to grow up and take some responsibility of their own.
@@pogpogpurinn but allergies still isn't the companies fault though. Now that she knows that she has allergies she should contact a dermatologist and stay away from those ingredients. No need to shade james or morphe over it.
I have sensitive skin. I can't use any time of face wash, I break out. Yet to find one that works, I use water and a cloth. I can't use moisturizer, my face breaks out and it gets dryer and very irritated. I do not expect every single brand to put a huge disclaimer about every single thing. Ingridients yes, but I don't know what irritates my skin. If my skin got irritated from something I would never go off on a brand because of it. If I knew what irritated my skin I'd be the one looking up the Ingridients. I'd also assume things that have a lot pigment also could potentially stain. Im not some makeup person, I rarely wear colors but it's common sense to me. Maybe I'm just one of few.
Before I got into makeup I didn't know the difference between eyeshadow and pressed pigments. When you advertise a product that is not safe for eyes, that needs to be relayed to the consumers. Not every consumer is makeup savvy. Pigments can stain and can cause allergic reactions. That needs to be mentioned when you advertise a product. A tiny tiny image of an eye with a circle crossed out is not good advertisement and not fair warning. How Jeffree handled his blood sugar palette is how everyone should handle their advertisements. It's important to be 100% upfront with consumers and give them the details on their product. How James handled the situation of his product causing harm to someone was very poorly handled. What pressed pigments are and their safety risks is not common knowledge if you are not makeup savvy.
I find it hard to believe that this girl could have such a strong reaction to this pallet, yet claim to have used blood sugar and not have had any staining or reaction. Also, if she had the blood sugar pallet then She has seen videos saying that it stains. So for her to say she didn't know isn't believable. Yes James probably should have been more specific when he did his release video. However, as a customer it's up to me to know what I'm buying. And as I said, if this girl buys Jeff Star products, there is no way she's not aware of risks of pressed pigments. Also those of you mad about hee needing to go to a dermatologist... Anyone with skin allergies knows you need to have a good dr a phone call away. I react to lotions, soaps, shampoo, detergent, makeup, medications... You name it. Do you think I make TH-cam rants every time I have a reaction? It's my fault for trying something new and not checking labels. Live and learn.
I absolutely LOVE how you went about this video pulling up examples of similar situations. Your just very professional about it and are going about it in an informative way instead of coming for someone
Thank you! I've been getting supwr annoyed with the snobbery of "everybody knows this", I don't, I'm a regular consumer and this could have happened to me. I don't personally read the small writing on almost anything I buy before using, who does? Hos attitude has really turned me off buying anything from him. And for people saying he's only 19, well, if he wants the money and the credit, he needs to take the responsibility too, that's just how it works. Thanks for educating us, as always
If you don't read the packaging and just hope it's all in some video, well that's on you. It's on the box for you to read, not just go Haha I'm not looking at that. I blame you if you don't read the box. Also the only people allergicly reacting are the ones with allergies to other things and have sensitivite skin. If you don't know what a pressed pigment is and you have allergies and sensitive skin you should research that.
@@ekohw oh, boy, sweetie, I don't need him to say that in a video, I don't follow him. I mean warnings should be more explicit and clear. If you read the small word in EVERYTHING, congratulatuons, you must have more time than most of us
@@ekohw I didn't attack anybody, don't get offended, it's not that deep, he's laughing about this all the way to the bank. Still, it's his name on it, he should learn to take it graciously and learn, otherwise he won't be taken seriously. And don't tell me what to do, sweetie
Well put Jen. Thank you. I agree the girls video was dramatic, but still, she has to walk around with Hives on her eye, and it’s not just a blemish she can easily conceal. I watch beauty YT all the time, but I don’t often wear or buy bright colored palettes (I like natural colors) So I wouldn’t have known about pressed pigments, and I’m a bit makeup obsessive lol (but I obsess over face and contour products, not so much eyeshadow). I think he handled the situation poorly, and he’s shown a pattern of this. He can’t attack people, especially people who bought his palette! And call them ignorant. like people said, he admitted himself that he knew little of pressed pigments. Even if he was unaware in the video, he easily could have contacted Morphe asking for more information so he could share with his fans. And just to vent.. I don’t like that he’s claiming to break makeup history with a rainbow palette... Morphe themselves have done colorful rainbow style palettes. I think he’s extremely naive and immature, and lacks the ability to address people in a respectful way.
Michiko Wright but the hives are her skin he allergies she can’t blame anyone but herself for not doing a patch test to see if she would react you should do this with everything you put on your skin lotion body scrubs ect even if you have no know allergies it’s just a smart thing to do
James seems like a decent kid -- and -- it appears to me he has a lot of maturing to do. One should not EVER speak to a customer that way regardless of what they say. He needs to apologize (which takes maturity), learn and move on. If he doesn't, it would tell me he's surrounded by way too many "yes" people and not enough level-headed advisers.
Great video, Even I didn't know that about pressed pigments. I think the ownership is on Morphe to highlight the disclosure of pressed pigments and all the potentials. This was an eye opener dare I say that.
I love that James created like a real rainbow palette, it’s gorgeous. But I wish James had done a collaboration with literally any other brand... I feel Morphe is misleading and just not honest with its customers. There is just something about the way they conduct business that seems like they rather just pump out tons of products and get paid than create a true customer base. Jen did a fabulous job with this video. She is very ethical and fair when she is discussing or comparing especially if there is controversy!
Jen another great video. Your response was what you say when you are an adult. James Charles is an arrogant child. He went straight to defensive mode because he took it personally. He doesn’t have years of experience to effectively do customer service for a disgruntled person who bought his palette. It is not the first time I felt he was way out of line and it probably will not be the last. If you are releasing a palette at least take the time to educate yourself on what the palette is made out of, boring maybe, but then you could handle a situation like this.
My problem with this is he actually called it an eyeshadow pallet. Morphe has other palettes on the website under the eye category that have the same ingredients. On the back of the carton with the ingredient list it has an eye that is crossed out for certain shades.... but why are are they selling them without warning on the website. As you cannot see the back of the carton when you are looking at a website
It's a legal thing. Besides, It's not as if someone applying a _pressed pigment_ as eyeshadow.. instead of an _eyeshadow_ as eyeshadow, is going to result in them spontaneously combusting. LOL. Although I am amused by the thought of that.. at the end of the day, it does not change the fact that it is still an eyeshadow palette.
I truly don't understand why anyone would want to use an eyeshadow "not meant for the eye" nor do I understand how companies would include these "eye shadows" if they know they might cause staining and/or other issues.
I'm so glad you're speaking on this. The hate IMO that this girl is getting is absolutely horrendous & the way he responded to her was trash. Yes both could have handled it differently but all this drama and hate towards this chick is so over the top and some of the things people have said to her are terrible and they should be ashamed for speaking to her that way. James is clearly not ready for fame. He can't take ANY criticisms and handles thing's so immature And let's not forget that not long ago James said himself he didn't know the difference between shadows and pigments and then goes on to tell that girl its "common knowledge" smfh
I get hives a lot from a bunch of different stuff. Most recently, it was from something in a face mask I used so I had to go through all the ingredients in it to try and figure out what isn't in other stuff I use so I can know what it is I am allergic to. It's not common for most people, but she did say she is allergic to a lot of stuff.
John Rapp It's actually quite common for people using makeup containing red dye (I forget the number off the top of my head lol) to get hives. My issue is James's/Morphe's failure to warn their consumers of this possibility. Along with staining. That's all. Just failure to inform.
Thanks for you for sharing your point of view and your side of the story. I hope that everyone watching this video reads your comment.
do you plan on expressing this to your fan base or kodee?
Beautifully written, James! As a fan, I really appreciate the way you've handled this drama.
Didn't the Kodee lady say she had hives? Makes it more questionable about what else is in the shadows. Very beautiful palette but I will pass
You are so informative, non dramatic, non problematic, and completely unbiased. I’m a new subscriber and I am on a binge! I appreciate your work!
Like I was saying on twitter, not everyone understands the difference. He himself said in his video that he didn't even know there was a difference between pressed pigments and a typical eyeshadow until he started working w/morphe on formulations. If he didn't know, how can anyone including him assume that the regular consumer knows?
Yes!
Right
exactly! he’s such a brat.
Exactly! He's being a hypocrite at this point. He himself said he didn't know the difference then goes on to tell someone who got HIVES on their EYES that it is COMMON KNOWLEDGE when not long before he DIDN'T KNOW the difference. 🙄
Yes! That's such a good point!!!
....side note. am I the only one who doesnt care if an eye shadow stains?
Maura McBride if you’re gonna wear makeup again then just cover it up with more makeup once you’re gonna use it again. I don’t see the problem with it, it’s like wearing red lipstick and not expecting it to stain!
I got my eyes lids stained pink by a other brand. I just shrugged it off, It will come off eventually
i don’t care, as long as the product works well and the eye looks look stunning then i don’t mind!
Wish mine would stain forever.... sometimes. Lol
I don't mind. Pinks and reds almost always stain. 🤷🏻♀️
He's known for being rude when he's being criticized. That's why I don't like him.
Yes! All this is so true. Makes me sick he gets a pass.
its ya girl liz exactly
I'm confused a few weeks ago he was raving how much of an expert he was even more so than Marlena Stell from Makeup Geek and that's why he wanted the documentary on Netflix. So " recently he learned about press pigment and formulation". So is he a makeup expert or not?
Jen love your news and reviews you are awesome
Johnathan Glez He is. He's an 18 year old kid who obviously knows everything there is to know about make up. He has nothing left to learn and is obviously very humble.
@@daniellelopez3342 😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@daniellelopez3342 love it
Just want to say I REALLY love these informational opinion pieces. So well-researched and you present such a balanced approach.
Just because that what she “does,” doesn’t make it right.
fucking preach
yes dude !! i worked in retail too and trust me if you start screaming like this you will NOT get your way, you will be asked to leave.
Yes 👏👏👏
It's obvious none of you are in high management. Ask them to leave, and yea it may settle the issue in the lower ranks (the retail store location you're employed at) but an issue like this could lead to corporate offices and the CEO of the company lol issues don't just end when you ask someone to leave...especially when they have a valid point to be pissed off. Yea it sucks when ppl yell at you but y'all are really just the worker bees for large corporations who would reimburse the customer as well as let you go in a heart beat... *shrugs* James handled the situation terribly. Hopefully he can learn from it.
Of course Queen Jeffree has the best explanation- he owns his own company so legally he’s responsible for the most. ❤️
Reds/pink shadows are made with VERY strong pigment which can cause staining. Morphed should have released a statement warning customers. Many brands in the past have with such colors.
i agree but she doesnt be horrible to a 19 year old boy.
R. Aislynn THIS🙌🏻🙌🏻
Exactly!
THIS 🙌🙌🙌
*AMEN!* They always say how involved they are and blah blah.

Chrisa Mayhew
Well said!
Yuppp
The thing is, though, he said he was "surprised" Morphe was able to match his "concept" in the photo he sent Linda... Why would anyone be "surprised" about something like that if they were actually in the lab, working on it...?
I am 39 and come across many entitled people James age as well as my own. And I can say that James is not entitled. If anything he is a breath of fresh air. He appears to be a very genuine and good hearted person. Things get missed. We are all only human. I doubt very much that he was out to hurt anyone in anyway.
My God, you are SO level headed...it’s absolutely amazing and refreshing!!
Debbie bubbles Cunico yep we’re just regular people, we shouldn’t have to be scientists to know...
Debbie bubbles Cunico if you are a cruelty free customer you would know what red40 does
PinkKoalas then read the boxes lol it was written on the box
It's not about pressed pigments, it's about red dye that is vegan. Maybe you don't watch cruelty free and vegan channels, but if you did you would 100% know that.
Even if I know, not everyone knows. I think that if you are trying to do a collab you need to test the palette. This seemed that he didnt test anything. I know the palette is for morphe, so they should have said that, but when the release is in your Channel, you should say It. Yes, it is on the eyeshadow box, so do I need to buy the palette and then read that????
James: I didn't know what a pressed pigment was xP
Also James: It's common knowledge
He didn’t know what a pressed pigment was but he did know eyeshadows can stain😂. I thought it was common knowledge too.
.
He said he didn't know what a pressed pigment was until recently, and that CERTAIN SKIN TYPES STAINING is common knowledge. Don't go throwing sh!t on people when you don't even have correct info.
It doesn’t matter what TH-camr they collaborate with, Morphe is non -stop drama!
true and true!
Sydney Baker I feel like a large portion of it is people being being like this girl and going over the top for clout
BryceSim11 That is definitely part of it. Had this been just another palette with no one’s name but Morphe on it (the same goes for all the JH drama) I don’t think people would have reacted in the same way. Either way, still drama though. They can’t seem to escape from it.
Except morphe put warnings that it's not it's not necessarily safe for eye use on the box so...no?
Rachel Lovins Yes. People certainly need to do their own research and read labels and use common sense instead of waiting for a TH-camr to tell them every possible detail. Just so much unnecessary drama!
Well said, Jen! I agree there should have been a more clear warning about the pressed pigments not legally being eye safe because it’s not common knowledge for the average consumer.
yup!
I think most brands do by having a crossed eye symbol on their pallets.
k leung even with that symbol though, it really should have a written disclaimer along with it specifying why it’s not eye safe / what the consequences may be if consumers choose to use it on the direct eye area anyway (or do so accidentally)
@@NatalieMarie917 i totally agree, but legal wise they complied with fda rules as a symbol counts as a warning too? So they are legal wise covered i guess?
k leung I’m assuming they probably fulfilled their legal obligation, but in terms of ethics... questionable
I'm a nurse and I didn't know pigments could stain either but I wouldn't
blame James, his roll is as a creative designer not a chemical
engineer! If there not safe the company should say no to the artist and
why. James is young and may not have years of experience as a chemist
but clearly he has a good heart and is an artist. Too many people these
days don't take their share of the blame, did she do a patch test?? no
none of us do lol but its not the artists fault.
I was hoping you would do something on this topic. You’re always the person to go for the well-informed section of the makeup community.

I so agree! He himself said that he recently learned a lot about shadows and pressed pigments and then says its common knowledge? Not cool!!
I live in fucking Spain, morphe and ulta don't exist here. How the fuck am I suppossed to swatch them?
@@whattwowhat Uhhh, maybe don't buy it then? No one said she had to have it. She could have waited, got a patch done, researched, documented any cases of peoples will allergies having a reaction to it, and then made a conscious decision. She wanted it. It's her risk to take if she is unwilling to commit to a patch test first.
I think it's more on morphe, not James
yep i agree

So letting him off the hook as a 'spokesperson' after he took credit for IDEA, DESIGN & FORMULA just tells the influencer community it's ok to lie to us
@@huntsman145
Just as I said in my comments on your previous post, I see your point 💯%.
I do feel James over-inflated his actual input for the final product. Absolutely! Yes, he lied/prevaricated/misrepresented and misled people on that point. No argument from me! ☺
However, that is a contractual matter between him and Morphe™, at best, no matter how ill-used by, we, the customers/consumers, may feel about what James said/didn't say or do with the finished product.
Let's break that down:
CLAIM 1.) James said he had the original IDEA for this palette.
No idea.)
And, going back to claim #1, how did James Charles' "idea" get to Morphe™? What? Did he call them up one day and say, "Morphe™? I've got this sister-slay idea for a sister-palette of super-sister colors and shades for every sister to make their own sister-looks out of!"
However... Somehow I don't think it quite went down that way. 🤓
Take care huntsman145 !!

New subscriber. L'occitane video drama brought me here. And now I'm binge watching. I love your calm and cool headed approach.
Same here. :)
You know who this girl sounds like, the mom from incredibles.
Robert Ibarra omg yes
i cant un hear it now
I had an aneurism trying to understand what you said
OMGGGG LMAO! I love this comment! ( no hate towards ya Jen)
I agree!!
Having a teenager admit they are wrong & apologize is already difficult enough....but having a teenager who became famous pretty much overnight and is having millions of dollars thrown at them admit they are wrong is probably pretty much dang in possible lol
Janelle AndCrew Underrated comment lol this is so accurate
Katherine Burgess
Let's not forget that these are cheaply produced products from china.
I think he meant that red pigments stain which makes sense, he’s not really talking about it being a pressed powder
That is a very good point.
JAMES DID HAVE A WARNING ON THE BACK OF THE BOX
🤦🏻♀️
Rusy Rose exactly but all the others had the same warning and don’t do that
Jen Luvs Reviews i feel you...
Since he is a TH-cam guy, he should have mentioned it in his videos... in any of his videos. Like the other two in their videos 🤦🏼♀️
I agree. She needed to take some responsibility for not reading the box. However, he could have mentioned it - others did. Even if he thought only MUA's would use it, someone didn't tell him how wide his range is. So several places to see mistakes being made.
Codee's video was definitely overdramatic, but the way James responded was 100% unprofessional
Artliker1234 omg grow up. I’m actually not a fan!!!
Rach Williams why don’t you? You don’t even know what you’re talking about. Jeffree has done the exact same tantrum thing James did and worse
Jeffery ??? That’s James Charles brother??
Artliker1234 I never said he hasn’t. All I said is that he knows his stuff when it comes to business and does what needs to be done. If your going to get your nose bent that far out of wack over giving credit where credit is due there’s something really wrong. Troll away... I won’t be returning to waist my time with any future comments from you. 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
I discovered you today and I'm three videos in and I think you're bloody brilliant!
OMG Thank you!!! I clicked as soon as this posted!!! I LOVE your content Jen!
I stopped watching Tati to watch Jen 🙌🏽🙏🏽🙌🏽
Her reaction was straight up ridiculous.
Edit: I should clarify that I mean Kodee's reaction.
Another thing could be how long she had it on, like if she left it on over night and then wiped it off the next morning
James has a lot of control over the formula but no one should be getting bashed
If you see this James I am your biggest fan and I love you so much even though I am ten I still love you
Agreed but not only that, hE DID SAY SOMETHING it was just more subtle and sence he talks fast most people wont notice, im mad cuz begginers buy the most expensive makeup and expect to be pros, you dont learn to blend and practice youll never be there, the Shadow wont work for you, you have to work it in yourselfs, dont buy makeup of you dont wanna put the effort to blend it all blending is done by the brush holder not the makeup. And she sound like a whiny old woman if you ask me.petty.
You made a great point about James’s wide audience. This assumption that she should have known better is just silly.
Jeffree still stands above the rest with his straight forward approach. He cares about his customers
I feel like despite James's incessant need to portray and call himself a "professional"...we have to remember his age. It's normal to be reactionary and petty at 19. Hell, his brain isn't even fully developed yet lol so I'm not at all shocked by how poorly he handled this situation.
Miss Powers lol, very true
"I'll read a label to make sure a product is vegan. I will NOT read a label to make sure this is safe for my eyes." This is now the world we live in.
Thank you.
You did great!
i still feel sorry for James but thats just my opinion
I completely agree with you. The average consumer isn't aware of those things
Thanks Jen!! I’m one of those twitter friends that made you do it 😁😁
Overall I can see why kodee felt duped buuuuuut her rant was also a bit over the top. I feel like a reaction is always a risk with putting products on your face, especially the eye area.
seriously she really did lose a lot of her sympathy that way.... but then James said that terrible shit in response. augh!
I believe that is her “style” of video, I do agree it came over aggressive.
Yes its james's colab, but they are the actual makers and should know better! morphe seems to always forget to mention or make things clear!
kristie LovesJesus They seem to just wipe their hands of it whenever there is drama like with Jaclyn Hill
Exactly. Morphe is the shittiest company when it comes to drama because they push it on the influencer. Like bitch- YOU’RE the makeup company, TF you at?!
There is a little sign on the packaging that indicates that it might stain
So it isn’t really morphe’s nor James’ fault, it’s the consumer’s fault for not looking through the ingredients and signs on the packaging
kristie LovesJesus Not everyone watches youtube, some people who buy it may not even know who James is until then; maybe they just like the colors in the palette.
I think that too!!
People forget he’s only 18
Morphe as a brand seems to have an undercurrent of sleaze and weirdness about them- all the launches and the collabs seemed rushed and ill considered, and the brand itself does not seem to have a sense of voice or focus, other than make beaucomp bucks.
I love your channel, it’s so informative!
Thanks for the information. I didn’t intend on buying the palette, but will take warnings more seriously moving forward.
Jordan Derrick
He’s 19
janine pannell LOL I don’t think so.
Kevin James Bennett omg I love seeing your take on this whole thing!
He is just in it for the money. No sense of responsibility whatsoever which is a great characteristics of a good business person.
She hadn't had allergies on her eyes before which she said on the live stream so she wouldnt have knoen what to look out for
@@pogpogpurinn but allergies still isn't the companies fault though.
Wow!! You did an amazing job explaining everything & sharing your point of view without attacking either side👏🏽👏🏽
Your hair is stunning today. And the lip. Aw hell, you're gorgeous, as others have noted here. Thank you for this video! 😘💋💋💋💋
Becki P agreed 🌟
Who does? People who know they're allergic to something, or have sensitive skin.
If you read the small word in EVERYTHING, congratulatuons, you must have more time than most of us
@@spenx09 He isn't in charge of the warnings on the box. It isn't his job to put it there, attack morphe, not James.
Michiko Wright but the hives are her skin he allergies she can’t blame anyone but herself for not doing a patch test to see if she would react you should do this with everything you put on your skin lotion body scrubs ect even if you have no know allergies it’s just a smart thing to do
Saying " oh you should know " is just so ridiculous ! Most people wouldn't know that . Your video is dead on !
Don't most make-up users use something to prime their skin & eyelids? Genuine polite question. 😎
@@YVRCasting no not always.
@@robynghafoor4965 well I'm guessing they should.
Wow you are very good with words, never seen a youtube channel that is so unbiased as yours are and touch on this subjects as objective as you do 👌🏼❤️
I love that James created like a real rainbow palette, it’s gorgeous.
So it’s eyeshadow that you can’t use on your eyes?
I am impressed with the way you advised James on how he could have replied to kodee in a more sensible, gentle and professional way.
Favorite moment of the rant video: *EXPLAIN THAT, MR. CHARLES!!*
I wasn't gonna watch this whole video because I just wanted to know what the tea was, but man she just kept pulling me in. Great video!
I really enjoy your videos Jen. I always learn so much from them and you are always standing on neutral ground which I really appreciate
Thanks so much, Zaytia!
He can't take ANY criticisms and handles thing's so immature
And let's not forget that not long ago James said himself he didn't know the difference between shadows and pigments and then goes on to tell that girl its "common knowledge" smfh
His reaction was definitely terrible. Even if she was overreacting, if you’re selling something you need to be decent to your customers.
I've pretty much missed everything going on since I've been on vacation but it was interesting to hear your thoughts Jen! :)
Thanks for watching, Samantha! I hope you had a great vacation!
The staining is normal, but the hives though 😣
Ya. That didnt look like hives though, just staining....
Laura R Idk, I seen a pretty hefty bump on her brow bone area 🤔 unless ofcourse she's always had that?
She said she gets hives from everything all the time.... so not the normal reaction for most people.
