The Umbrella Academy is back for its third season and now's a great time to pick up the comic it’s based on. Based on the third volume, the latest season takes inspiration from the Hotel Oblivion, but there are plenty of differences to explore.

I really hope that they eventually give Diego his ability to breath underwater, or Klaus his power of levitation!
I think Diego has that, as there’s a scene in s1 where he searches a large lake for his Reggie’s monocle. But that could just be little bit of foreshadowing of him unlocking his powers later.
They kind of foreshadowed Klaus' levitation In season 2 where Ben as a spirit picks Klaus up in front of a group of wealthy people

43 kids in the show, it says right at the start of season 1
Diego’s ability isn’t knife throwing- he can manipulate the trajectory of objects. Yes this skill lends well to knife throwing but it’s this ability that allowed him to stop and redirect the bullets last season
it really amazes me how most people miss this. i've seen quite a few videos and essays on the show and diego's abilities are always "knife throwing". like even without the scene of him redirecting the bullets last season, all the scenes where he throws the knives and they CHANGE TRAJECTORY should be enough of a clue to properly name his powers.
I always thought his ability is to control metal. This make him have a limitation that he cant control static objects, but also widens it cuz he can control whatever that has a trajectory
@@veeem15 they miss it bc there wasn't much context given to explain it. Literally all he did first season that I can remember is throwing knives. So ppl assumed his special gift was that he was an expert marksman. When he deflected all those bullets everyone was confused bc it conflicted with what we were shown
@@ndo533 yeah, but during the second season they slowly show his true powers; they shown how he made knives just bend their trajectory mid air and even the first scene of season 2 was him evoiding and redirecting the bullets the soldiers shot at him back to the soldiers.
If we want shows that don't carry us by the hand, we have to pay more attention to when this type of worldbuilding is done subtibly.
@@triccele but that's what I'm saying. All he really did in Season 1 was throw knives. They didn't explain his powers at all. So ppl were confused when he deflected those bullets. Thats no one else's fault but the writers if ppl were confused at first bc again, it wasn't really hinted at until season 2
Klaus being immortal is funny considering he was immortal in another iconic series 'Misfits'
Yeah, and in Misfits, he also could see ghosts. I mean, the characters are quite different, but is funny they have basically the same powers.

to be fair I think the first umbrella comics were published before misfits so it might be Nathan from Misfits was somewhat based on Klaus or it could just be an accident. Though both of them played by the same actor is most likely just producers being a bit lazy and going for an actor that they knew would do great as a goofy immortal playing with ghosts
@@Ysmir. but in the comics, Klaus powers are quite different: he can speak to ghosts, have telekinesis and levitation. It might just a nod to his previous character
@@triccele Nathan could speak to dead too. Not in the same way, he just saw the dead as normal people, half the time he didn't even know they were dead but still, pretty similar
My biggest gripe from season 3 was not showing enough of the characters powers.. especially Diego and his recently learned telekinetic trajectory manipulation at the end of season 2! Hope he gets that underwater breathing power up in the next season

Well he can't breathe under water. He can hold his breath for unlimited time.
and Allison's storyline and focus were ridiculous, her intentions, her motivations, everything was wrong and poorly written.
Isn't a new power tho. Diego's power was always redirecting stuff, is just that he chose to do it with knifes most of the time instead of with other stuff
@@GodofStories I was gonna say, im not a reader of the comic series, but Allison turned into one of the most unlikeable characters ive ever encountered
Lila being a show exclusive character and one of the best characters makes it even better.
(And Ben is named the horror because of the Cthulhu abomination that he uses, horror, abomination, makes sense)
I normally hate the snide kid or the whiny one in shows, but for some reason Klaus and 5 are my favourite characters

While I typically hate changes from the book to show/movie. I like that the umbrella academy doesnt use the traditional villains. Its like heroes with real personality. And real flaws. Meaning that villains would be just the same. heroes, with flaws, that like to work alone. Viktor easily jumped between being a hero and villain. And for anyone whos finished season 3 we know someone else in the family kinda went dark too.

Actually a sit that notes the differences. Love how no one ever picks up that Hazel and cha cha are the wrong way round. In the comics Hazel wears the pink mask
yeah, and I guess in comic books they are both man as they call each other 'man'...

And Hazel in the show is deep down dissatisfacted with his life and ready to make some changes, in the comic he is just a deranched evil man.
I hope they do more with Diego’s ability. He can curve projectiles at his will. Whether he’s thrown them or not. That’s why I can curve bullets in season 2. But he’s throwing cans in this season and is missing 😂 still love this show so much. Just felt like his ability was a little nerfed this season.
Ikr he even got his fingers slashed, doesn't make any sense. He could have just change its trajectory.

It kinda pissed me off he didn't use his power against Jayme, the spitting one. When they showed her spitting ins slow motion, I asumed Diego was just make the spit went another direction and they would notice what Diego's powers actually were.
I was really surprised they gave Klaus immortality, funny how it was also Nathan's power in Misfits, both played by Robert Sheehan
I remember in the first season I said “OH, he’s like Nathan” and my sister said “ no, Nathan was immortal “ and then laughed at me, LOOK WHOS LAUGHING NOW CHELSEA
If I had a nickel for every time Robert Sheehan portrayed an unkillable super hero I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
Not just that. If you had a nickel for every time he played a medium/ person who can communicate with the dead, you’d have three. There’s a movie where he plays a medium with ptsd and alcoholism/ drug abuse.

for the people still confused about diego's powers, he has trajectory manipulation. he can control things when thrown. or is in the air moving. such as bullets or previously thrown knives.
I really enjoyed Season 3 and I hope the series gets at least 1 more Season. If so, Season 4 needs to have more scenes of the Umbrellas and the Sparrows fighting alongside each other, as well as give us more information on the other 29 children born with superpowers.

I’d consider Allison the “villain” of this season and there was no resolution to this. It was like watching the villain get everything they want and win in the end and I love klaus’s character development this season, he is my favourite character by far. Him just being like “whatever” when he and luther died was so funny to me. And I would like to know what his spirit barrage, or whatever it was, was.
Allison has to be depowered and sent to Phantom Zone. This gal is deluuuusional.
I love what they did with Klaus for the show, he's one of my favorite characters! He's super funny but he also experiences a lot of growth
8:00 actually, Harlen seems to have killed 27 woman. While it’s not 100% confirmed if he actually did, episode 1 of season 3 starts by dropping the 43 kids born to only 16. Since Hargreaves never made any comment about causing less Children to be born in S3, it’s probably more fair to assume they all died like the 6 main character’s mothers
I'm pretty sure viktor confirmed harlen killed the 27 women.
Im pretty sure thats right cuz viktor stated the number of about 20 something women dying that day. He reached half of them.

the umbrella academy is the greatest example of not all changes from source material are bad. like i don't mind the plot straying from the original book or in this case comic, as long as it's just good and it works.
Ben being named The Horror is literally because his tentacles is that of an Eldritch God akin to Chtuhlu, you know from the genre of Comsic/Lovecraftian Horror
Those are some weak tentacles, one little stab and Ben is down.

I wanted to comment this too. The commentator for this video is a little naive.
No mention of Allison's powers? In the show she just mind controls people. In the comic literally anything she says can come true.
This is what I noticed too. Didnt she create her daughter with her powers? Or was it her daughters father? I remember thinking she did something quite significant, it wasn't just rumouring her daughter to sleep
maybe on the show she doesn't even *know* she can actually do it, and her powers (maybe as well as those of the others) will be explored in the next season.
Something I've noticed is that only 5 and now Klaus really know their powers very well at all in the show. Everyone else never had the chance to fully explore what they could do since their father never pushed them beyond their current capabilities (like the crash course Klaus went through). Even 5 struggles to control his time jumping ability. The rest of them had no reason to improve their abilities and hated their father as well, so they stuck to just staying where they were.
That’s not actually true, Allison in the show can bend reality. She rumors someone that “she blew their minds” and their brains exploded, literally.

Kinda weird the main marketing for this season revolved around the Sparrows but they gave us almost nothing of any substance with them. It was like they were just plot devices to shoehorn in Sloan and the new Ben.
Yeah, most of the Sparrows had so much potential that could have been explored more, but I think marketing-wise it was a clever decision. I don't think they would have gone away with the "ahhh another apocalypse again🙄" strategy, it gets old after sometime. And Sparrows were the only plot point that was known to the audience after S2 that alluded to S3. So why not make hype around it? They couldn't have revealed the Kugelblitz, or Reggie's plans or the Seven Bells so early- it would have taken away the suspense of it.

I really enjoyed how they changed the whole orchestra to Leonard who really got a story and a purpose while the comic villains were just "WE WANT TO DIE!!!"
As explained in this video, in the comic villians are more cartoonishly evil, in the show they are more realistically evil.

@@jjba3571 That’s how comics work, lol. The comics are way more coherent than the series and a lot more enjoyable, but it’s not worth comparing them since they’re from different platforms, so that’s that. Without Gerard there wouldn’t be Umbrella Academy.

I just wanted to say... Diego's power is not just throwing knives, he can manipulate the trajectory of any projectile, as it was shown during the intro and final episode of season 2, when he manipulated the bullets.
the only comics adapted show that might not be too accurate but is still perfect and even the comics are awesome

The writer of the comics Garth Ennis went on record that he hates superheroes and the comics were his way of venting his hatred. The ending of the comics is universally bad and predictable ASF SPOILERS Billy butcher loses his mind & kills his teammates and then sets it up so Huey kills him.

Let it be known that Klaus's immortal ability is the actors same ability in Misfits season 1.
More like Misfits season 2, as he also can see ghosts in that one.
I believe in season 3 it was hinted that 5 is (canonically) not aging. I think he mentioned something about eternally being in a state of hormones going wild, or something like that. Of course more difficult to keep it that way with an actually aging actor.
However! They could make him age now I'm the new universe.
I think that was more of joke with 5 still going through puberty since he’s only like 13-14
They brought it up in season 2 as well. The Handler said they were working on making him an adult body. He wasn't going to be able to age in this one.

Actually in the comics five's cells didn't stop aging because of his time traveling but because of the commission's augmentation surgeries on him to make him the perfect weapon, giving him the dna of the finests assassins and serial killers

Actually like the route they went with by changing the characters up from the Comic Books
I really enjoy this kind of adaptation, where it isn't a 1-to-1 or a summary of the original but a remix of it. It would still feel fresh if you only experienced one version yet still be familiar
Like Locke & Key, I think overall Netflix has been doing good with the adaptations. Yes, there are differences. But in both cases I like the comics and the live-action.

Changes to Klaus are great in my opinion. He's one of my favorites in the show.
I'm a fan of both. I like very much how the show has become its own thing because you get a lot more characterization and surprise in the plots. Though I do hope to see a more faithful adaptation one day, because the comics setting brings a lot of personality.

Im pretty sure in the comic Diego's only power is holding his breath whilst knife throwing is a skill he practiced to compensate for the fact he doesnt really have a useful power. In the TV show his power is trajectory manipulation though I think
According to the creators of the show, though, S4 may be our final venture into the Academy. I’m hoping they’re incorrect there.
it may be depending on the S3 went with viewership. it seemed like S3 didnt have the budget for a lot of the CGI they were going for. Makes me think Netflix didnt have as much faith in it.. Also releasing it the same month as Stranger Things instead of a a different month to retain viewers.
I personally think it'd be fine with just one more season, as much as I love the characters, running for too long can be a problem. I can see the plot lines left being closed in one more season, two if you want to be more generous. Any more than that could ruin the characters imo

The showrunner specifically said he always planned the show to be 4 Seasons, I remember him saying that when promoting Season 2. When Season 1 was being promoted, he said (paraphrased) "Gerard told me the comic is gonna be, I think, 8 volumes? So ideally we'd do 8 Seasons of the show, but I don't know if Netflix will keep us around that long. *laughs*"

They didn't mention the VAST difference between Luther's "ape" body in the show vs comic? Sorry, I thought that was a huge difference.
Also in the comics klaus isn't always followed around by Ben and only sees his ghost once, and Ben's ghost looks like an actual corpse
Klaus is immortal in the comics too and does also have that same scene in the black and white heaven/afterwolrd(?) meeting who is suggested to be god, tho in the comics its an old cowboy on his horse and not a young girl on a bike
What's very cool about the scenes that are present both in comic and show is that they're following the exact same lines like basically word for word

my only nitpick is that technically Viktor could have kept his original name, Vanya, as a name is unisex as a matter of fact the most famous literary character to have that name, is a man named Uncle Vanya
I think they changed it to make it more obvious for the viewer of the show that vanya/victor is a boy. Also it's pretty rare for transpeople to keep their names since in their mind and in the mind of everyone around them the name is kind of bound to the other gender and it is just a clean cut and the begin of something new ^-^
It's not uncommon for trans people with more gender neutral names to still change their name when they transition.

@Purple Headed Yogurt Flinger yes they could have played vanya as female. I don't have enough information about this to argue about with you, so please correct me if I am wrong. I think I read something about Elliot Page said he would play Vanya as female and it was the producers choice to match the character to be trans as well.
Also its pretty cool to have some positive visibility for trans people.
Ben is called the horror because (in the comics at least, I can't remember if they say anything about this in the show) his stomach opens a portal to another dimension full of monsters. It's supposed to be referencing cosmic horror, unspeakable gods, unknowable terrors, the horrors.
Why didn’t Diego move the projectile in the other dimension with Lila when he got his fingers cut off?
After watching most of the first two seasons, Vanya is such a genuinely terrible person. I mean, of course she ended the world in season one, but she was manipulated, so she was still a bit of a sympathetic character for me. Then in season 2, she committed adultery and felt no shame, she kidnapped a child, she killed people for no reason after they tried to stop her from kidnapping the child... and I'm sure the rest is just as bad.

If Klaus can always resurrect (it just takes time) - then how come he did not resurrect after the original Apocalypse in the first season, to tell the details to Five?
Like in season 3, he probably did not want too and had no reason too. He probably chose to stay with his siblings and no wonder around alone forever, and he probably though 5 went to peace.
@@samlifts2173 Yeah, as the scene with Luther suggests, he can stay dead if he wants to, and him coming back to life before was always him just thinking it was time to wake up from his dreams.

Luther and five could both technically be related in the show since Lyla was present around Harland even if they never met they were in close enough proximity for him to “feel” her presence so her mother could be the 6th mother to be killed

Can't believe they forgot one of the best scenes in season 2, his power isn't knife throwing either, it's projectile manipulation, that's why he was able to redirect the bullets twice last season, in the opening and finale.

I love that they very much rejected the sexualisation of female characters in the show. many live adaptations from comics, eg dc and marvel, continued to exploit female bodies and tried to centralised their characteristics around their external "sexiness". very glad to see that the umbrella academy has been giving us hot and well-rounded characters.
Yes, is actually kind of sad that comics still lowkey sexist in that department, this dude literslly wrote 3 female characters and all of them are heavy sexualized, yet the male are all super overpowered smart and sassy, self insertion where 🙄... and literally one of the girls power is literally being vein and manipulative .... show writers save that for us

I don't understand why we don't call Vanya Vanya in the first 2 seasons. She becomes Viktor in season three, an not earlier. It's cool the worked it in like they did, but come on, don't rewrite the first two seasons. She was called Vanya.
He was always Viktor and deadnaming is never cool even with fictional characters. That’s why they also changed the credits of the first seasons to Elliot Page. It’s not that hard.
@@curlycrown3494 but know we are stuck with confusing descriptions for the sake of political correctness. When I was S02E03, that personage is called Vanya. In S03 it becomes Viktor. Clarity is more important than the feels in this case, is my opinion.

I thought the same thing about Diego & Ben's hero names in the comics. Doesn't make too much sense.
Ben is The Horror because of his Cthulhu stomach, and Diego is The Kraken because he can hold his breath underwater forever. (Diego's power is holding his breath forever, not water breathing, he uses it to escape gas traps a few times in the comic)

What I don't get is Elliot, he's playing the role of a woman, why does his character have to also be trans, that's the point of acting, the character isn't you, sure you put a bit of yourself in the character, but the character isn't you, we apply this rule when we absolutely hate a character, see Joeffrey from GOT or Reeva from Kenobi, brilliant and talented actors, horrible characters you want to see die in the most grisly way possible, why is this rule not applied the other way around?

The handler and detective patch don't exist in the comics either, and Hazel and cha-cha are both men in the comics, with Hazel being the black character in the pink mask and cha cha being the white one in the blue mask. Confused me a lot when I was reading lol
