It also helps that they did a really good job on the English dub and the VAs seemed to have put a lot of effort into it (so many dubs just feel lifeless with 0 emotional range).

Japanese speedrunners still wear suits when they stream DQ3 as a sort of in-joke that they are trying out for the Yakuza.

He is all ready a hero might not be in his world but he is to us who play the game and experience all of the work him and his friends go through. We get mad when he gets mad. we cry when he crys. No matter how you look at it he is a hero he just doesn't know to whom
See, this is what I love about Ichiban. Guy’s the definition of “a kid at heart.” Yeah, it may sound a bit corny to say that your childhood dream was to be a hero (and he admits as much), but he’s got a childlike worldview, and rather than treat him like a joke character, the game uses him to say, “You’ve got that inner child too, y’know. Don’t let the world snuff it out. You can use it to do something good.” Basically, he’s the foil of Sundowner from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance; instead of being in touch with the “cruel” part of one’s inner child, Ichiban is in touch with the part that says, “Nobody’s beyond saving, you look out for your friends even if they take a different path from you, and the world can be a bad place, but we can try to make it better.” Of course, the moments when reality hits him tend to hurt that much more because of it, but he never loses that innocence. Sorry for the long-ass essay; this is just what I find so endearing about this bat-wielding, possibly brain-damaged Dragon Quest fan-turned-ethical-gangster/vigilante. If I had to pick anyone from Yakuza to be my friend...well, the list would be fairly long, but Ichiban would be high up there.
How the hell can a series not only get away with replacing a legendary protagonist like Kiryu but do such an amazing job that Ichi would make me laugh or weep constantly depending on the situation for 77 hours. He's incredible and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio are top tier.
I rewatch this scene and this video once a week. I didn't play I'm English, but it's fun to heat them speak. The reason I play it so much is just the fact that, for some reason, this scene makes me almost cry. It's such a relatable scene to me because, like Ichiban, I wanted to be a hero when I grew up. "Life is work" is a true statement, but this reminds me to have that dream and keep it. I've never had a video game that has inspired me more than Yakuza 7.
I love JRPG and turn bases genre, but I really surprised when they announced Yakuza 7 will be using turn based system, and it turner to be one of turn based rpg with great mechanic.
This game really came out of nowhere and surprised me. I put 70 hours into it and enjoyed just about every second of it. I can't remember the last time I was so enthralled not just by an JRPG, but any game. Absolutely loved the world and character (this is also my first Yakuza game), and it was really awesome to see a studio figure out how to do turn based combat but make it feel kinetic and almost real time. I can't wait for the next one.
so sorry for the late reply. however I don't know if this track is in the official OST. I skimmed through the soundtrack a bit ago and don't recall hearing this tune. if I ever do figure it out, I will make sure to jump on here and let you know.
Pre timeskip was 2000. He went to jail shortly after the turn of the new year, 2001. 7 came out on PS1 in August of 2000 in Japan, so he was probably playing that one.
I've been seeing so many dub clips in this game i've just realized they redo all the lip-sync too. Most games I know would just dub the voices but keep the jp lipsync. +Points for AtlusWest for the localization, truly a good one even though it's still feels weird after 7 games of non-dubs. Question though, do they still get the OG Yakuza PS2 dub actors for characters like Kiryu or Majima?
I can see how this seems weird for a lot of old Yakuza players. I'm new to the series so it all was very natural to me and the English voice cast was really good throughout. You're totally right about the lip synch. If they didn't go that extra step it would not have been as enjoyable. As far as your question about the dub actors, it seems like they did use the same actor for Kiryu, Darryl Kurylo.
I wanna say as a 25 year old biological man 2 of the fictional characters i aspire to be like are from the Yakuza games One's Kiryu The other's Ichiban

Well said! Like A Dragon Was my first Yakuza game and I immediately fell in love with it and Ichiban.
God I love Ichiban
Nanba's wheeze I swear lmfao
How the hell can a series not only get away with replacing a legendary protagonist like Kiryu but do such an amazing job that Ichi would make me laugh or weep constantly depending on the situation for 77 hours. He's incredible and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio are top tier.
Yes!! This is, to me, an rpg player of more than 30 years of games, the pinnacle of rpg stories
I love that, thanks for sharing!
I honestly feel the same way & I'm supper excited for the new game!
God, I love this game so much.
me too!

In other words:
You're never too old to start your life or to start over.
true.
I'm pretty sure that after those words he would take the title of Erdrick

My life… IS just like a video game!
Don't care if fancy like a castle or shit like rags on floor... As long you comfortable, that's all that matters
did saeko knew ichiban's imagination of battle vision that turned his enemies into monsters?
Watching this as I play DQ9
:)
This will get lost in the comment.
But I genuinely believe this is one of the most well written scene of all time in a video game
TO THE HEROES OF TOMORROW!!
Huzza!
Ichi surely cried when Toriyama died.
And it's canon, idc what the creators say.
RIP 😔
Is there a name for the ost playing in the background?
so sorry for the late reply.
however I don't know if this track is in the official OST.
I skimmed through the soundtrack a bit ago and don't recall hearing this tune.
if I ever do figure it out, I will make sure to jump on here and let you know.
Once the mathy guitar tapping kicks in the emotions get epic with the “why not become a hero at forty”
Late, but the song is called friendship

As far as your question about the dub actors, it seems like they did use the same actor for Kiryu, Darryl Kurylo.
such a wholesome scene
Even in a video game, video games help people
Is it weird to say I want Ichiban in smash bros instead of Kiryu?
4:16
well its either that or just eat all the money you get in contact with.

Lmao nanba's voice in english sounds waay different than his monotone japanese accent

Ok, I’ll buy Yakuza: Like a dragon.
Hell yeah! 😀
God this needs to stop I'm gonna fucking cry
The want to be a hore is in all of us, Ichiban just needed a small push to archieve his dreams.
I wanna say as a 25 year old biological man
2 of the fictional characters i aspire to be like are from the Yakuza games
One's Kiryu
The other's Ichiban
Why not become a hero at 36 right?
Better late then never.
