  • This is week 5 of our course on Christianity in the Caribbean, with a special emphasis on Christian views and practice regarding slavery and race. The Quakers were the first sectarian group to arrive in the new world on the island of Barbados, and were greatly conflicted about how to respond to slave owning. It was not until the 18th century in North America that Quakers began to take a definitive stance in opposition to the institution of slavery, but, beginning with George Fox's visit to Barbados in 1671, Quakers began to invite their slaves into their meetings and into the the Christian faith, although with only minor success. The large scale Christianization of Afro Caribbeans into Christianity would have to wait until the arrival of Moravians from Germany, and eventually Baptists and Methodists.
