Great video. Locking several kayaks together if you don’t have a good anchor point would probably work as well. Pretty hard to move if they can’t be separated.
@@StevenSmith-7t391 that would have been a good idea for me to add, to bad there isn't a quick way to do update a video without an edit and re-upload. thanks for watching!
i watch him all the time and actually im a hobby picker myself. others have mentioned they can get through this setup but what i tell people is lock buy you time. they can all be defeated. i took this lock because, kayaking the entire Mississippi river i didnt want to keep track of a key
That’s a great tip that I’m going to use. I use a Master Lock Python to gang lock our 4 kayaks together. It’s always been a pain to find something in each kayak to wrap around while still having enough length on the cable lock. If I may give you a tip...use red Loctite on the nuts and bolts so someone can’t loosen the nuts.
I was really hoping to find a lock, a bit like a steering wheel lock. Essentially a pole that extends out, longer than the cock pit, which can easily have cables threaded through. Would involve no drilling or modifying of the kaya. Alas, I can't find anything. Any bright ideas would be appreciated.
I originally designed a lock to do just this but I ended up not making it because it was too heavy and bulky for me to take on my long distance kayaking trips. I generally fabricate my own devices for such things. How serious are you about acquiring one? We might be able to work out some kind of a deal.
@@escapewithjay bro, I'm in Australia... by the time I ship it etc, I can probably engineer it myself. Just surprised something similar doesn't already exist. I live in a unit complex. My man Jay, Locking it up and being safe as hell. I remember in one of your Mississippi River videos, I think someone had their canoe stolen, taken for a joyride. That has stuck with me, good to know it can be locked up like a bike. Thats a heck of a steel ring you put it in there, bet a shotgun couldn't get that off. Nice work, Great video. See you on the river.
What up my man! You know i really just hate reading about people having their boats stolen and since i am not always around to... deal with these people... I want to at least try to bring some awareness to the problem. I can only hope it helps.

yes, since i was taking the boat about 1/3 of the way down the mississippi river i knew i would have to leave the boat behind for supply runs. a good lock method was a must
I got them from Ace Hardware in my area. Look for "Anchor Rings" online and you should be able to find some. Carriage bolts, rubber washers, steel washers, lock nuts and silicone are all available at any hardware store. Good Luck!
hi im having some issues with the carriage bolt i dont understand how to install them. When you install them on wood the square part of the head sink into the wood and the bolt stops turning so you can tight the nut but with the plastic it just keep spinning. I feel like i miss something how did you do it ?
@@felixmarchand5450 you know i probably grabbed it with a vice grip and held it while spinning. i also have a rubber gasket/washer between the head of the carriage bolt and the hull. this is also why i used a lock nut so i could tighten the carriage bold down snug on the rubber washer but not so tight that is squishes it.after i was done i used some silicone around the outside of the bolt, rubber washer and the hull just as extra protection but i do notice on the rest of the boat the manufacturer never did any of that. they simply ran screws into the hull and called it good. good luck, hope that helps

Comments showing up with ways to bypass this method of locking your kayak. -First @ :40 I state there is no guarantee when securing your boats. This is an option to minimize your risk but you can not 100% prevent it. -2nd, of the comments stating they can bypass the lock in seconds, i understand and agree that I too can achieve this with minimal time and effort. One thing I think we can all agree on is an unlocked boat is quite a bit easier to take than a locked one. -3rd, if you have a better method please feel free to offer it and help others out. This is not the end all be all system, it is what I use.
Lmao I hate asking for likes and subs as well. Sad part is it does help though. I have that sit on yak so I just run my cable through the scupper holes. I need to look into the kind of cable you have because all I got is a 6' bike lock. My yak hugs the tree to get it around 😆
Another great video Josh! I especially liked the tip about running the cable through itself to make it longer when attaching the cable to an anchor object. Do you have any tips on keeping the gear in the boat safe from theft. Obviously, when you are traveling on a long river trip your boat is loaded with gear and when you leave the boat to re-supply you can't take all,of the gear with you. I plan to take my electronics with me, but bulkier and heavier items will have to stay behind with the boat. I am wondering what I can do to discourage theft, besides hiding the boat and gear out of sight. I will definitely lock the boat up,as you described, but it would be easy to open up,the hatches and take all of my gear that got left with the boat. Thanks for another great, well thought out video.
Yeah keeping the gear behind and secure is tricky. Any time I would leave the boat behind i would take as much with me as possible, mostly the items i could minimally continue the trip with even if everything else was gone. (hammock, tarp, sleeping gear, etc..) 1 idea that occasionally comes up on the paddlers page is to leave a note telling what you are doing and that you will be back for your stuff. This would be to solve someone finding the boat and thinking it washed up there. with a thief this note would not help. I packed my boat with the knowledge that i would carry most tings out if i left the kayak behind. short runs into town if the boat is at a marina locked to the dock you "should" be good. be especially aware of what is around when you do need to leave the boat behind. if there are people watching you or a busy boat launch its better to figure something out whether bringing the boat with you or locking it up anytime its out of sight
absolutely but keep in mind, "ALL" locks can be defeated no matter what you do. its all a matter of how long will it take for someone to find a way to defeat a lock. the nuts are locking nuts, so slightly harder to remove without tools. you could add jb weld to the threads to make them nearly permanent, you could damage the threads or tack weld them for additional resistance. you can always do more but again, all locks can be defeated cheers 🍻
