Awesome video on a topic that not enough of us think about, ahead of time!

FYI: For a little more peace of mind check with your insurance company. I have a $15 a year policy that covers theft of my kayak and gear from my truck.

Is that with home insurance or car insurance?

@@camcam3087 Not sure, ask your agent if they offer it.

I like the idea of the cable lock. I like to pack up my kayak the night before a trip and it makes me anxious leaving it out overnight. A step up from the simple siren alarm would be a 2 way alarm system. Typically used for motorcycles or cars and much more expensive, they have much longer ranges (mile+) and give you alerts to the remote fob.

No theft deterrent is "100% failsafe". The best deterrents make it inconvenient enough for them to move on before they can steal your stuff, but will never stop the most determined of them.

Great tips! I have the alarm (can the batteries be replaced?) and a combination cable lock (no keys!) AND those very straps you have there, which I also like. Tha Air Tags suggestion is great!

Yes the batteries can be replaced by removing a small screw on the bottom

@@spiltmilt Thanks! I have one and figured I might need to add fresh batteries.
BTW, I once went fishing and the alarm went off while I was launching. Didn't have the key fob! So I took the alarm out and muffled it in my truck and by the time I got back it had stopped. But probably need a new battery!

Can you do a video comparing roof rack crossbars and kayak roof top systems? There are so many options out there from the major manufacturers but it’s not clear why the prices are so different from one brand to the next.

I use a steel cable as well, I call it my "please don't steal my stuff" cable. Definitely not going to stop everyone but like you said most criminals are lazy and looking for the easy score.

I have a boat cover for mine , just low key white , I think it draws less attention, the boat rides in a rack on top of my truck

As far as the Apple AirTags, don't they make noise? That's what has kept me from buying them for theft protection. I get why they built it that way, to prevent people from using it for stalking. But it does mess with the ability to use it for theft prevention.

    • @spiltmilt

U can turn off the noise.

The air tag is such a good piece of mind like you said. I can neither confirm nor deny if one is hidden in my PA.
